In analyzing the nano-scale phenomena or behaviors of nano devices or materials, it is often desirable to deal with more atoms than can be treated only with a full atomistic simulation. However, even now, it is advisable to apply the atomistic simulation to the narrow region where the deformation field changes rapidly but to apply the conventional continuum model to the region far from that region. This equivalent continuum model can be formulated by applying the Cauchy-Born rule to the exact atomistic potential as in the quasicontinuum method. To couple the atomistic model with the equivalent continuum model, continuum displacements are conformed to the molecular displacements at the discrete positions of the atoms within the bridging domain. To satisfy the coupling constraints, we apply the Lagrange multiplier method. The continuum model in the bridging model should be applied on the region where the deformation field changes gradually. Then we can make the nodal spacing in the continuum model be much larger than the atomic spacing. In the first step, we generate the atomic-resolution mesh with the nodal spacing equal to the atomic spacing, and then we eliminate the nodal degrees of freedom adaptively using the node deactivation techniques. We eliminate more DOFs as the regions are more far from the atomistic region. Computing time and computational resources can be greatly reduced by the present node deactivation technique in multi scale analysis.

This study analyzes the dynamic response of a floating crane with a cargo considering an elastic boom to evaluate(or for evaluation of) its flexibility effect on their dynamic response. Flexible multibody system dynamics is applied in order to establish a dynamic equation of motion of the multibody system, which consists of flexible and rigid bodies. In addition, a floating reference frame and nodal coordinates are used to model the boom as a flexible body. The study also simulates the coupled surge, pitch, and heave motions of the floating crane carrying the cargo with three degrees of freedom by numerically solving the equation. Finally, the simulation results of the elastic and rigid booms are comparatively analyzed and the effects of the flexible boom are discussed.
Complex and large lattice type structures are frequently used in design of bridge, tower, crane and aerospace structures. In general, in order to analyze these structures we have used the finite element method(FEM). This method is the most widely used and powerful tool for structural analysis. However, it is necessary to use a large amount of computer memory and computation time because the FEM resuires many degrees of freedom for solving dynamic problems exactly for these complex and large structures. For overcoming this problem, the authors developed the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). This method is based on the concept of the transfer of the nodal dynamic stiffness coefficient which is related to force and displacement vector at each node. In this paper, the authors formulate vibration analysis algorithm for a complex and large lattice type structure using the transfer of the nodal dynamic stiffness coefficient. And we confirmed the validity of TSCM through numerical computational and experimental results for a lattice type structure.

However, it is necessary to use a large amount of computer memory and computational time because the FEM requires many degrees of freedom for solving dynamic problems exactly for these complex and large structures. For analyzing these structures on a personal computer, the authors developed the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). This method is based on the concept of the transfer of the nodal dynamic stiffness coefficient matrix which is related to force and displacement vector at each node. And we suggested TSCM for free vibration analysis of complex and large lattice type structures in the previous report. In this paper, we formulate forced vibration analysis algorithm for complex and large lattice type structures using extened TSCM. And we confirmed the validity of TSCM through computational results by the FEM and TSCM, and experimental results for lattice type structures with harmonic excitation.
A mixed eight-node hexahedral element formulated via the Hu-Washizu principle as well as the field extrapolation technique is presented. The mixed element with only three translational degrees of freedom at each node can provide extremely accurate and reliable performance for popular benchmark problems such as spacial beams, plates, shells as well as general three-dimensional elasticity problems. Numerical calculations also show that when extremely skewed and coarse meshes and nearly incompressible materials are used, the proposed mixed element can still possess excellent behaviour. The mixed formulation starts with introduction of a parallelepiped domain associated with the given general eight-node hexahedral element. Then, the assumed strain field at the nodal level is constructed via the Hu-Washizu variational principle for that associated parallelepiped domain. Finally, the assumed strain field at the nodal level of the given hexahedral element is established by using the field extrapolation technique, and then by using the trilinear shape functions the assumed strain field of the whole element domain is obtained. All matrices involved in establishing the element stiffness matrix can be evaluated analytically and expressed explicitly; however, a 24 by 24 matrix has to be inverted to construct the displacement extrapolation matrix. The proposed hexahedral element satisfies the patch test as long as the element with a shape of parallelepiped.
Recent case series and meta-analyses have suggested that robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (RAMIE) could be a useful alternative to video-assisted thoracic surgery esophagectomy. The advantages of RAMIE are a 3-dimensional view, 7 degrees of freedom, and tremor filtering, which enable more meticulous lymph node dissection with a lower incidence of complications. However, in radical esophagectomy, understanding the concepts of the fascia and compartment is crucial for successful and reliable dissection. The first RAMIE in Korea was performed by our team in July 2006, and since then, we have developed related techniques to achieve better short- and long-term outcomes. The key step in RAMIE for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is dissection of the upper mediastinum due to the difficulty of lymph node dissection and the high incidence of nodal metastasis in the area. Herein, we describe the technique of fascial plane dissection with esophageal suspension during RAMIE.
A method of analysis is proposed for curved multicell box girder grillages. The method can be used to analyze box girder grillages comprising straight and/or curved segments. Each segment can be modelled by a number of beam elements. Each element has three nodes and the nodal degrees of freedom (DOF) consist of the six DOF for a conventional beam plus DOF to account for torsional warping, distortion, distortional warping, and shear lag. This element is an extension of a straight element that was developed earlier. For a more realistic analysis of the intersection regions of non-colinear box girder segments, the concept of a rigid connector is introduced, and the compatibility requirements between adjoining elements in those regions are discussed. The results of the analysis showed good agreement with the shell finite element results, but the proposed method of analysis needs a fraction of the time and effort compared to the shell finite element analysis.
This paper presents the construction of consistent coefficient matrix elements for jointed structures using the reduction of flexibility and mass matrices. The reduced flexibility coefficient matrix hat little structural complexity than Guyan's stiffness matrix reduction since the only element of the original matrix, corresponding to the selected nodal degrees of freedom, contributes. The proposed method was applied to building equivalent coefficient matrices for a clamp jointed structure in finite element modal analysis of a cantilevered beam. The theoretical analysis results were compared with those experimental modal analysis, Comparison of both shows good agreement each other.

A finite element model for polarization switching in electro-mechanically coupled materials is proposed and applied to predict the switching behavior of a two-dimensional ferroelectric ceramic. A complicated micro-structure existing in the material is modeled as il continuum body and a simple 3 node triangle finite element with nodal displacement and voltage degrees of freedom is used for a finite element analysis. The elements use nonlinear constitutive equations, switching criterion and kinetic relation, fur representation of material response at strong electric and stress fields. The polarization state of the material is represented by internal variables in each element, which are updated at each simulation step based on the proposed constitutive equations. The model reproduces strain and electric displacement hysteresis loops observed in the material.
Thick composite laminated plates is considered in 3D finite-element. To consider continuity of transverse stresses and displacement field, mixed finite-element has been developed by using layerwise theory and the minimum potential energy principle. Mixed finite-element has been enforced through the thick direction, Z, of a laminated plate by considering six degree-of-freedoms per node. Six degree-of-freedoms are three displacement components in the coordinate axes directions and three transverse stress components ${\sigma}_z,\;{\tau}_{xz},\;{\tau}_{yz}$. The model maintain the fundamental elasticity relations that are stress-strain relation and displacement-strain relation, because the transverse stress components invoked as nodal degrees of freedom by using the fundamental elasticity relationship between th components of stress and displacement. Random vibration analysis of the model is performed by computing consistent mass matrix and computing covariance in frequency domain technique.
