  • Background: Garlic and its constituents are reported to have been effective in reducing methane emission and also influence glucose metabolism in body; however, studies in ruminants using garlic leaves are scarce. Garlic leaves contain similar compounds as garlic bulbs, but are discarded in field after garlic bulb harvest. We speculate that feeding garlic leaves might show similar effect as garlic constituents in sheep and could be potential animal feed supplement. Thus, we examined the effect of freeze dried garlic leaves (FDGL) on rumen fermentation, methane emission, plasma glucose kinetics and nitrogen utilization in sheep. Methods: Six sheep were fed Control diet (mixed hay and concentrate (60:40)) or FDGL diet (Control diet supplemented with FDGL at 2.5 g/kg $BW^{0.75}$ of sheep) using a crossover design. Methane gas emission was measured using open-circuit respiratory chamber. Plasma glucose turnover rate was measured using isotope dilution technique of [$U-^{13}C$]glucose. Rumen fluid, feces and urine were collected to measure rumen fermentation characteristics and nitrogen utilization. Result: No significant difference in rumen fermentation parameters was noticed except for rumen ammonia tended to be higher (0.05 < P < 0.1) in FDGL diet. Methane emission per kg dry matter ingested and methane emission per kg dry matter digested were lower (P < 0.05) in FDGL diet. Plasma glucose concentration was similar between diets and plasma glucose turnover rate tended to be higher in FDGL diet (0.05 < P < 0.1). Nitrogen retention was higher (P < 0.05) and microbial nitrogen supply tended to be higher (0.05 < P < 0.1) in FDGL diet. Conclusion: FDGL diet did not impair rumen fermentation, improved nitrogen retention; while absence of significant results in reduction of methane emission, glucose turnover rate and microbial nitrogen supply, further studies at higher dose would be necessary to conclude the merit of FDGL as supplement in ruminant feedstuff.

  • In the present study, the effects of supply gas and water mist on the heptane pool fire extinguishing performance were investigated using the full cone and hollow cone twin-fluid atomizers. Air or nitrogen of 30 lpm (Liter per minute; L/min) was used as the supply gas, and the experiments were conducted under the water flow rate conditions of 0 lpm (i.e., discharge of air or nitrogen only) and 0.085 lpm (i.e., discharge of water mist with supply gas). Experimental results confirmed that the use of water mist discharge with the supply gas and full cone spray pattern reduced the fire extinguishing time as compared to that of only supply gas discharge and hollow cone spray pattern. In addition, for the discharge of water mist using the full cone twin-fluid atomizer, water mist significantly affected fire extinguishing performance, whereas the effect of the supply gas was less pronounced. On the other hand, for the discharge of water mist using the hollow cone twin-fluid atomizer, the fire extinguishing time was remarkably reduced by the supply of nitrogen, as compared with that of air, indicating that the supply gas as well as water mist can significantly affect fire extinguishing performance.

  • BACKGROUND: To investigate mineralization characteristics of organic resources in the soil, five materials (rice straw, cow manure sawdust compost, microorganism compost, mixed oil-cake, and amino acid fertilizer) were treated according to the nitrogen content, and an indoor incubation experiment was conducted for 128 days. The results of this analysis were applied to determine the nitrogen mineralization pattern of these organic resources. METHODS AND RESULTS: During the constant temperature incubation period, the nitrogen net mineralization rate of the organic resources was the highest in the amino acid fertilizer with the highest nitrogen content, and the lowest in the rice straw with the lowest nitrogen content. A positive correlation (0.96) was observed between the potential nitrogen mineralization rate and total nitrogen content. The mineralization rate constant, k, was negatively correlated with the organic matter (-0.96) and carbon content (-0.97). The nitrogen mineralization rate during the first cropping season, as estimated by the model, was 6.6%, 11.6%, 30.9%, 70.7%, and 81.0% for the rice straw, the cow manure sawdust compost, the microorganism compost, the mixed oil-cake, and the amino acid fertilizer, respectively. CONCLUSION: The nitrogen mineralization rate varies depending on the type of organic resources or the nitrogen content; thus, it can be used as an index for determining the nitrogen supply characteristics of the organic resource. Organic resources such as compost with low nitrogen content or those undergoing fermentation contain organic nitrogen. Organic nitrogen is stabilized during the composting process. Therefore, as the nitrogen mineralization rate of these resources is lower than that of non-fermented organic resources, it is desirable to use the fermented organic materials only to improve soil physical properties rather than to supply nutrients for the required amount of fertilizer.

  • In this paper, we propose the development of nitrogen cooling equipment for personalized local area. The proposed equipment consists of a cold air supply module, a body, and nitrogen injection with the following characteristics. First, it automatically controls the amount and time of cold air supply by utilizing information measuring skin temperature with volumetric temperature sensors, so it can have a competitive edge in function by ensuring complete safety. Second, if the distance measuring sensor is applied to the skin for more than a certain distance, it can block the cold air or control the discharge of nitrogen in conjunction with the control GUI to improve the efficiency of higher cooling therapy while providing safe management. Third, by installing a control module that can control the supply of nitrogen, the cost of maintenance can be minimized by minimizing the loss of nitrogen. Experiments at an external testing agency to evaluate the performance of the proposed equipment showed that the accuracy of the temperature sensor was measured in the range of ±3.8%, which is lower than the world's highest level(±5%), with a range of 110℃ to -160℃ similar to the world's highest level. Distance accuracy was measured in the range of ±3.0%, lower than the world's highest level(±5%), and weight accuracy in the range of ±0.1%, lower than the world's highest level(±5%). In addition, emission control was measured in four stages, higher than the world's highest level(stage 1) and nitrogen use was measured at 0.8L/min below the world's highest(6L/min). Therefore, the effectiveness of the methods proposed in this paper was demonstrated because they produced the same results as the world's highest levels.

  • This experiment was carried out to study the effect of oxygen on chemical composition and physical properties of tobacco leaves during flue-curing. The results obtained were as follows: Starch content decreased and sucrose content increased with increasing oxygen supply during curing. Glucose and fructose of the cured leaves showed high content at the 5-10% oxygen supply. Amino-N and nitrate-N increased with increasing oxygen supply. Total nitrogen and NH4-N showed the lowest value at the 5-10% and 10-15% oxygen supply in the cutters and leaf, respectively. Chlorophyll and chlorogenic acid increased, and total volatile base decreased with increasing oxygen supply. The activity of α-amylase increased at the latter period of flue-curing, and the maximum activity point were delayed 12 hours with increasing oxygen supply. Shatter index of cured leaves decreased with increasing oxygen supply. It was desirable to supply oxygen during flue-curing for the improvement of chemical and physical properties such as starch, total sugar, chlorogenic acid, and shatter index of cured leaves.

  • The decomposition performance of the Surface induced Plasma Chemical Processing(SPCP) for benzene, toluene, xylene and $NO_2$ were experimentally examined. Discharge exciting frequency range was 5kHz and 10kHz, and low frequency discharge requires high voltage to inject high electric power in gas and to decompose contaminants. The decomposition rate of dioxide nitrogen for 5kHz power in gas and to decompose contaminants. The decomposition rate of dioxide nitrogen for 5kHz power supply is only 85%, but it’s rate for 10kHz power supply is very high, more than 96% when peak voltage is 12kv. Aromatic hydrocarbon vapor of up to 1000ppm is almost throughly decomposed at the flow rate of 1000$\ell$/min or lower rate under the discharge with electric power of several hundred watts. High decomposition rate is shown in every case, that is, for SPCP reactor is necessary to obtain the decomposition rate of more than 80~98%. The decomposition rate of benzene, toluene and xylene were 90~98% and dioxide nitrogen was 45~96%.

  • The behavior of Penicillium camembertii and Geotrichum candidum growing in submerged pure cultures on simple (glutamate) or complex (peptones) substrates as nitrogen and carbon sources and lactate as a second carbon source was examined. Similar to the behavior previously recorded on a simple substrate (glutamate), a clear differentiation between the carbon source and the energy source was also shown on peptones and lactate during P. camembertii growth, since throughout growth, lactate was only dissimilated, viz., used for energy supply by oxidation into $CO_2$, whereas peptides and amino acids from peptones were used for carbon (and nitrogen) assimilation. Because of its deaminating activity, G candidum preferred peptides and amino acids to lactate as energy sources, in addition to being assimilated as carbon and nitrogen sources. From this, on peptones and lactate, G candidum grew faster than P. camembertii (0.19 and 0.08 g/l/h, respectively) by assimilating the most readily utilizable peptides and amino acids; however, owing to its lower proteolytic activity, the maximum biomass was lower than that of P. camembertii (3.7 and 5.5 g/l, respectively), for which continuous proteolysis and assimilation of peptides were shown.

  • By using liquid and gaseous nitrogen as simulants, effects of pintle opening distance and simulant supplying condition on spray from pintle injector were investigated qualitatively. The experiment was performed by fixing the liquid supply pressure and varying the opening of the pintle and the supply pressure of gaseous nitrogen. Shadowgraph method with CCD camera was used for image visualization, and the differences of liquid-gas spray were compared by image post processing. In case of liquid nitrogen single injection, as the opening distance was increased, the injection speed was decreased. Therefore, the end of liquid sheet were converged to the center of spray. In the case of liquid nitrogen/Gaseous nitrogen spray, although shadowgraph images look similar to each other, It is shown that it can be analysed by image post processing.
