  • High-temperature superconducting coated conductors (HTS-CCs) are good candidates for resistive superconducting fault current limiter (RSFCL) applications. However, the high current density they can carry and their low thermal diffusivity expose them to the risk of thermal instability. In order to find the best compromise between stability and cost, it is important to study the heat transfer between HTS-CCs and the liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) bath. This paper presents an experimental method to monitor in real-time the temperature of a quenched HTS-CC during a current pulse. The current and the associated voltage are measured, giving a precise knowledge of the amount of energy dissipated in the tape. These values are compared with an adiabatic numerical thermal model which takes into account heat capacity temperature dependence of the stabilizer and substrate. The result is a precise estimation of the heat transfer to the liquid nitrogen bath at each time step. Measurements were taken on a bare tape and have been repeated using increasing $Kapton^{(R)}$ insulation layers. The different heat exchange regimes can be clearly identified. This experimental method enables us to characterize the recooling process after a quench. Finally, suggestions are done to reduce the temperature increase of the tape, at a rated current and given limitation time, using different thermal insulation thicknesses.

  • This study focused on the involvement of the unusual nucleotide (p)ppGpp, a stringent factor, during the morphological and physiological differentiation of Streptomyces coelicolor. Two genes, relA and rshA, were disrupted to demonstrate the roles of the stringent factor in the differentiation. The intracellular concentration of (p)ppGpp in the wild-type (M600) and disrupted mutants was measured in relation to the intentional starvation of a specific nutrient, such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphate or the in situ depletion of nutrients in a batch culture. As a result, it was found that the morphological characteristic of the ${\Delta}relA$ mutant was a bld phenotype forming condensed mycelia, whereas the ${\Delta}rshA$ mutant grew fast-forming spores and straightforward mycelia. In both mutants, the production of actinorhodin (Act) was completely abolished, yet the undecylprodigiosin (Red) production was increased. Intracellular (p)ppGpp was detected in the ${\Delta}relA$ mutant in the case of limited phosphate, yet not with limited carbon or nitrogen sources. In contrast, (p)ppGpp was produced in the ${\Delta}rshA$ mutant under limited carbon and nitrogen conditions. Therefore, (p)ppGpp in S. coelicolor was found to be selectively regulated by either the RelA or RshA protein, which was differentially expressed in response to the specific nutrient limitation. These results were also supported by the in situ ppGpp production during a batch culture. Furthermore, it is suggested that RelA and RshA are bifunctional proteins that possess the ability to both synthesize and hydrolyze (p)ppGpp.

  • Non-volatile memory is approaching its fundamental limits with the Si3N4 storage layer, necessitating the use of alternative materials to achieve a higher programming/erasing speed, larger storage window, and better data retention at lower operating voltage. This limitation has restricted the development of the charge-trap memory, but can be addressed by using high-k dielectrics. The paper reviews the doping of nitrogen, titanium, and yttrium on high-k dielectrics as a storage layer by comparing MONOS devices with different storage layers. The results show that nitrogen doping increases the storage window of the Gd2O3 storage layer and improves its charge retention. Titanium doping can increase the charge capture rate of HfO2 storage layer. Yttrium doping increases the storage window of the BaTiO3 storage layer and improves its fatigue characteristics. Parameters such as the dielectric constant, leakage current, and speed of the memory device can be controlled by maintaining a suitable amount of external impurities in the device.

  • Study was conducted to investigate the optimum amount of nitrogen fertilizer for the green forage production of Italian ryegrass at the paddy field after rice harvesting in southern part of Korea in 1987 and 1988. Effects of three levels of nitrogen fertilizer application (15, 30 and 45 kg N/10a) on the green yield and nitrate content of green forage at three cutting times (April 30, May 20 and June 10) were examined in 1988. The results were as follows. 1. Yield of green forage at all cutting times increased in order of 45 > 30 > 15 kg N/10a, and it increased about 14 percent in the 45 kg N/10a and decreased about 35 percent in the 15 kg N/10a compared with the 30 kg N/10a. 2. Nitrate content in the green forage at all cutting times was high with increasing amount of nitrogen fertilizer and with decreasing ratio of K/(Ca+Mg) in green forage. The nitrate content at the second and the third cutting times in the 45 kg N/10a might be outrunned the tentative limitation for cattle. 3. Maximum amount of nitrogen fertilizer was 48 kg/10a for total green forage production, but it was 38 kg/10a near at cattle's harmful limit of nitrate content in green forage.

  • Electrochemical ammonia synthesis from water and nitrogen using a Pt/GDC/Pt cell was experimentally investigated. Electrochemical analysis and ammonia synthesis in the moisture-saturated nitrogen environment were performed under the operating temperature range $400{\sim}600^{\circ}C$ and the applied potential range OCV (Open Circuit Voltage)-1.2V. Even though the ammonia synthesis rate was augmented with the increase in the operating temperature (i.e. increase in the applied current) under the constant potential, the faradaic efficiency was decreased because of the limitation of dissociative chemisorption of nitrogen on the Pt electrode. The maximum synthesis rate of ammonia was $3.67{\times}10^{-11}mols^{-1}cm^{-2}$ with 0.1% faradaic efficiency at $600^{\circ}C$.

  • The characteristics of cell growth and cellulose production by Acetobcter xylinum BRC5 were studied in shaking flasks and jar fermentors. Of the substrates tested, the highest cellulose yield was obtained from the fructose medium. Some inductive cultivation was observed and then cellulose was produced with cell growth. When glucose alone or mixture of glucose and fructose was used as the carbon source, cellulose could be biosynthesized under the glucose limitation. Corn steep liquor (CSL), as a low-cost nitrogen source, was a good substitute for yeast extract. In a jar fermentor experiment, 4.14 g/l of disintegrated cellulose was obtained from 8% CSL- medium containing 0.5% glucose and 1.5% fructose.

  • Extracellular polysaccharide was produced by Pseudomonas elodea NK-2000 under nitrogen limitation and aerobic condition, The effect of agiatation speed on cell growth and production of exopolymer was investigated. The agitation speed of 7.5 L fermentor ranged from 200 to 500 rpm. Production of exopolymer increased with higher agitation speed. Maximal cell growth and production of exopolymer from 2% glucose were 3.35 g/l and 3.80 g/l, respectively when agitation speed was 400 rpm.

  • Lean combustion performance of natural gas and hydrogen was compared in a spark-ignition engine. The lean combustion engine operation with natural gas was limited due to combustion instability at an excess air ratio (EAR) above 1.8. The total hydrocarbon (THC) emissions increased significantly with increasing EAR. The nitrogen oxides (NOX) emissions were also high due to the limitation of increasing EAR. The lean combustion engine operation with hydrogen showed superior combustion stability as well as low THC and NOX emissions, even at high EARs. However, boosting technology was required to reach the high EARs.
