Increasing the concentration of nitrate ions in the soil solution and then leaching it to underground aquifers increases the concentration of nitrate in the water, and can cause many health and ecological problems. This study was conducted to evaluate the vulnerability of Meymeh aquifer to nitrate pollution. In this research, sampling of 10 wells was performed according to standard sampling principles and analyzed in the laboratory by spectrophotometric method, then; the nitrate concentration zonation map was drawn by using intermediate models. In the drastic model, the effective parameters for assessing the vulnerability of groundwater aquifers, including the depth of ground water, pure feeding, aquifer environment, soil type, topography slope, non-saturated area and hydraulic conductivity. Which were prepared in the form of seven layers in the ARC GIS software, and by weighting and ranking and integrating these seven layers, the final map of groundwater vulnerability to contamination was prepared. Drastic index estimated for the region between 75-128. For verification of the model, nitrate concentration data in groundwater of the region were used, which showed a relative correlation between the concentration of nitrate and the prepared version of the model. A combination of two vulnerability map and nitrate concentration zonation was provided a qualitative aquifer classification map. According to this map, most of the study areas are within safe and low risk, and only a small portion of the Meymeh Aquifer, which has a nitrate concentration of more than 50 mg / L in groundwater, is classified in a hazardous area.

Seasonal variation of major inorganic ions in the greater Seoul area was estimated using a photochemical box model and a gas/aerosol equilibrium model with emphasis on semi -volatile nitrate. Pollutant emission was determined by season by comparing the predicted concentration with the measurement one obtained for a year from the late 1996. The results showed that particulate nitrate was the highest in summer but about 40% of total nitrate was present in the gas phase. This was due to volatilization at high temperature since ammonia was sufficient to neutralize all nitrate regardless of season. As relative humidity in summer was higher than the deliquescence point, particulate ion concentration with water was two times higher than that in other season. So called ‘NOx disbenefit’ indicating increase in particulate ion concentration with decrease in NOx emission was evident especially in winter.
New production (NP) values in well-mixed waters of the Yellow Sea were estimated using two different methods and were compared with each other; one is from the quantum yield model of nitrate uptake and chlorophyll ${\alpha}$-specific light absorption coefficient, and the other is from a traditional $^{15}N$-labelled stable isotope uptake technique. The quantum yields of nitrate uptake were highly variable, ranging from 0.0001 to 0.04 mol $NO_3Ein^{-1}$, and the small values in this study might have resulted from either the partitioning into nitrate uptake of little portions of light energy absorbed by phytoplankton or that phytoplankton may predominantly utilize other N sources (E. G. ammonium and/or urea) than nitrate. The estimates (0.54-8.47 nM $h^{-1}$) of NP from the quantum yield model correlated well ($r^2$=0.67, p<0.1) with those (0.01-4.93 nM $h^{-1}$) obtained using the $^{15}NO_3$ uptake technique. To improve the ability of estimating NP values using this model in the Yellow Sea, more data need to be accumulated in the future over a variety of time and space scales.
A distributed watershed model CAMEL (Chemicals, Agricultural Management and Erosion Losses) was applied to a small rural watershed where intensive livestock farming sites are located to estimate nitrate leaching rates from soil to groundwater. The model was calibrated against the stream flows, and T-N and $NO_3-N$ concentrations were observed at the watershed outlet for three rainfall events in 2014. The simulation results showed good agreement with the observed stream flows ($R^2=0.67{\sim}0.93$), T-N concentrations ($R^2=0.40{\sim}0.58$) and $NO_3-N$ concentrations ($R^2=0.43{\sim}0.65$). The estimated annual nitrate leaching rate of the watershed was 33.0 kg N/ha/yr. The contributing proportions of individual activities to the total nitrate leaching rate of the watershed were estimated for livestock farming, applications of chemical fertilizer, and manure. The simulation results showed that the highest contributor to the nitrate leaching rate of the watershed was chemical fertilizer applications. The simulation period was for one year only, however, and results may vary depending on different conditions. Gathering input data over a longer period of time and monitoring data for calibration is needed. When this has been accomplished, it is expected that this model can be applied to small rural watersheds for evaluating temporal and spatial variations of nitrogen transformations and transport processes.
Unsaturated/saturated groundwater flow and solute transport model, VSFRT2D(Variable Saturated Flow and Reactive Transport model) was developed considering effects of pumping, irrigation, and denitrification. VSFRT2D employed Richards equation as governing equation for groundwater flow and previously existing unsaturated models modified by including computational procedure of evapotranspiration at surface using Thornthwaite method when precipitation doesn't occur. Bioremediation processes based on monod kinetics are described using four nonlinear contaminant transport equations and three nonlinear microbes transport equations. The developed model was applied to field data in Hongsung area contaminated with nitrate. In order to identify the effect of precipitation, pumping, evapotranspiration, irrigation, fertilizer application, and various bioremediations on groundwater flow and contaminant transport, individual processes were separated and simulated. Then all results obtained from the individual processes are compared with each other. The simulation results show that bioremediation had a negligible effect on nitrate concentration change. However, pumping for irrigation, precipitation, and nitrogen fertilizer application showed profound influences on nitrate concentration change.

Seawater samples were collected at discrete depths from five stations across the polar front in the Drake Passage (Antarctic Ocean) by the $20^{th}$ Korea Antarctic Research Program in December, 2006. Nitrate concentrations of seawater increase with depth within the photic zone above the depth of Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW). In contrast, ${\delta}^{15}N$ values of seawater nitrate decrease with depth, showing a mirror image to the nitrate variation. Such a distinct vertical variation is mainly attributed to the degree of nitrate assimilation by phytoplankton as well as organic matter degradation of sinking particles within the surface layer. The preferential $^{14}{NO_3}^-$ assimilation by the phytoplankton causes $^{15}{NO_3}^-$ concentration to become high in a closedsystem surface-water environment during the primary production, whereas more $^{14}{NO_3}^-$ is added to the seawater during the degradation of sinking organic particles. The water-mass mixing seems to play an important role in the alteration of ${\delta}^{15}N$ values in the deep layer below the UCDW. Across the polar front, nitrate concentrations of surface seawater decrease and corresponding ${\delta}^{15}N$ values increase northward, which is likely due to the degree of nitrate utilization during the primary production. Based on the Rayleigh model, the calculated ${\varepsilon}$ (isotope effect of nitrate uptake) values between 4.0%o and 5.8%o were validated by the previously reported data, although the preformed ${\delta}^{15}{{NO_3}^-}_{initial}$ value of UCDW is important in the calculation of ${\varepsilon}$ values.

The adsorption behavior of nitrate nitrogen was investigated from aqueous solution using char prepared from oak chip. The removal rate of nitrate nitrogen was found to be dependent on temperature and it is increased as the temperature increase. Adsorption equilibrium data of nitrate nitrogen on oak char. reasonably fitted Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption energy obtained from D-R model was 12.5 kJ/mole at $20^{\circ}C$ indicating an ion exchange process as primary adsorption mechanism. Thermodynamic parameters such as ${\Delta}G^o$, ${\Delta}H^o$, and ${\Delta}S^o$ were -23.76 kJ/mole, 26.1 kJ/mole and 89.7 J/K mole at $20^{\circ}C$, respectively, indicated that the nature of nitrate nitrogen adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic.
This study aims to prepare a technical protocol for identifying the source of nitrate in water using nitrogen (δ15N) and oxygen (δ18O) stable isotope ratios. The technical processes for nitrate sources identification are composed of site investigation, sample collection and analysis, isotope analysis, source identification using isotope characteristics, and source apportionment for multiple potential sources with the Bayesian isotope mixing model. Characteristics of various nitrate potential sources are reviewed, and their typical ranges of δ15N and δ18O are comparatively analyzed and summarized. This study also summarizes the current knowledge on the dual-isotope approach and how to correlate the field-relevant information such as land use and hydrochemical data to the nitrate source identification.
LEACHN is the computer simulation model which can be used to simulate field-scale N transformations and movement and has three organic pools (plant residue, manure, and soil humus), three inorganic pools (urea, nitrate and ammonium) and plant. Pot experiment operated May to October in 2004. LEACHN simulated the nitrogen movement and transformation in soil using method of PEST and trial and error.
