  • Objective : To evaluate a new posterior atlantoaxial fixation technique using a nitinol shape memory loop as a simple method that avoids the risk of vertebral artery or nerve injury. Methods : We retrospectively evaluated 14 patients with atlantoaxial instability who had undergone posterior C1-2 fusion using a nitinol shape memory loop. The success of fusion was determined clinically and radiologically. We reviewed patients' neurologic outcomes, neck disability index (NDI), solid bone fusion on cervical spine films, changes in posterior atlantodental interval (PADI), and surgical complications. Results : Solid bone fusion was documented radiologically in all cases, and PADI increased after surgery (p<0.05). All patients remained neurologically intact and showed improvement in NDI score (p<0.05). There were no surgical complications such as neural tissue or vertebral artery injury or instrument failure in the follow-up period. Conclusion : Posterior C1-2 fixation with a nitinol shape memory loop is a simple, less technically demanding method compared to the conventional technique and may avoid the instrument-related complications of posterior C1-2 screw and rod fixation. We introduce this technique as one of the treatment options for atlantoaxial instability.

  • The purpose of this experiment was to measure the amounts of nickel and chromium released from a simulated orthodontic appliance in artificial saliva. Simulated mandibular half-arch orthodontic appliances were composed of American Iron and Steel Institute type 304 brackets, Permachrome, Elgiloy, Australian wire, T.M.A. and Nitinol. The amounts of nickel and chromium released from sample were measured with atomic absorption spectrophotometer after 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 days. The cumulative amounts of nickel released from Permachrome, Elgiloy, Australian wire and T.M.A. reached a plateau after 6 days. But the cumulative amounts of nickel released from Nitinol increased continuously. Significant amounts of both nickel and chromium were solubilized from the simulated orthodontic appliances into artificial saliva. After 15 days, total cumulative amounts of nickel were $152.15{\mu}g$, $150.27{\mu}g$, $134.74{\mu}g$, $114.67{\mu}g$ and $93.39{\mu}$ from the Elgiloy, Australian wire, Nitinol, Permachrome and T.M.A., respectively. Total cumulative amounts of chromium from Permachrome, Australian wire, Elgiloy, Nitinol and T.M.A. were $100.83{\mu}g$, $83.64{\mu}g$, $81.61{\mu}g$, $14.90{\mu}g$ and $12.43{\mu}g$, respectively. The result showed that nickel released from Elgiloy and chromium released from Permachrome were more than any others.

  • The thermomechanical characteristics of NITINOL shape memory alloy were evaluated using DSC with small samples and DMA with three-point bending specimens. The shape memory alloy of 54.4Ni/45.5Ti wt.% was used so that the austenite finish temperature was in the range of $50~100^{\circ}C$. Two types of sample were tested in the experiments corresponding to as-received and annealed conditions. Simple beam bending theory was used to calculate the dynamic moduli of the shape memory alloy. According to the results, a large discrepancy in transformation temperatures was found between DSC and DMA techniques. Annealing treatment was found to suppress the R-phase transformation during cooling and the secondary plateau in the austenite transformation. Such a heat treatment was also significantly influenced to raise the transformation temperatures and the moduli of the shape memory alloy.

  • It has been shown in the literature that active adjustment of the intake area of a jet engine has potential to improve its fuel efficiency. This paper presents the design and control of a novel proof-of-concept active jet engine intake using Nickel-Titanium (Ni-Ti or Nitinol) shape memory alloy (SMA) wire actuators. The Nitinol SMA material is used in this research due to its advantages of high power-to-weight ratio and electrical resistive actuation. The Nitinol SMA material can be fabricated into a variety of shapes, such as strips, foils, rods and wires. In this paper, SMA wires are used due to its ability to generate a large strain: up to 6% for repeated operations. The proposed proof-of-concept engine intake employs overlapping leaves in a concentric configuration. Each leaf is mounted on a supporting bar than can rotate. The supporting bars are actuated by an SMA wire actuator in a ring configuration. Electrical resistive heating is used to actuate the SMA wire actuator and rotate the supporting bars. To enable feedback control, a laser range sensor is used to detect the movement of a leaf and therefore the radius of the intake area. Due to the hysteresis, an inherent nonlinear phenomenon associated with SMAs, a nonlinear robust controller is used to control the SMA actuators. The control design uses the sliding-mode approach and can compensate the nonlinearities associated with the SMA actuator. A proof-of-concept model is fabricated and its feedback control experiments show that the intake area can be precisely controlled using the SMA wire actuator and has the ability to reduce the area up to 25%. The experiments demonstrate the feasibility of engine intake area control using an SMA wire actuator under the proposed design.

  • A low-profile flow sensor has been designed, fabricated, and characterized to demonstrate the feasibility for monitoring hemodynamics in cerebral aneurysm. The prototype device is composed of three micro-membranes ($500-{\mu}m$-thick polyurethane film with $6-{\mu}m$-thick layers of nitinol above and below). A novel super-hydrophilic surface treatment offers excellent hemocompatibility for the thin nitinol electrode. A computational study of the deformable mechanics optimizes the design of the flow sensor and the analysis of computational fluid dynamics estimates the flow and pressure profiles within the simulated aneurysm sac. Experimental studies demonstrate the feasibility of the device to monitor intra-aneurysmal hemodynamics in a blood vessel. The mechanical compression test shows the linear relationship between the applied force and the measured capacitance change. Analytical calculation of the resonant frequency shift due to the compression force agrees well with the experimental results. The results have the potential to address important unmet needs in wireless monitoring of intra-aneurysm hemodynamic quiescence.

  • Nitinol is an alloy of nickel and titanium. Nitinol is one of the shape memory alloys(SMA) that are restored to a remembered form, changing the crystal structure at a given temperature. Because of these unique features, it is used in medical devices, high precision sensors, and aerospace industries. However, the conventional method of mechanical machining for nitinol has problems of thermal and residual stress after processing. Therefore, the electrochemical machining(ECM), which does not produce residual stress and thermal deformation, has emerged as an alternative processing technique. In addition, to replace the existing experimental planning methods, this study used deep neural network(DNN), which is the basis for AI. This method was shown to be more useful than conventional method of design of experiments(RSM, Taguchi, Regression) by applying deep neural network(DNN) to electrochemical machining(ECM) and comparing root mean square errors(RMSE). Comparison with actual experimental values has shown that DNN is a more useful method than conventional method. (DOE - RSM, Taguchi, Regression). The result of the machining was accurately and efficiently predicted by applying electrochemical machining(ECM) and deep neural network(DNN) to the shape memory alloy(SMA), which is a hard-mechinability material.

  • Tracheal collapse is a common respiratory disease in dogs. There are many ways to treat tracheal collapse, one of which is the use of an intraluminal stent. In this study, we divided 21 dogs into two groups and implant conventional stents and new nitinol stents. Comparison of two groups was based on following, feature of stent fracture, form of stent migration, clinical sign improvement, complication and prognosis. Approaching was established via C-arm under spontaneous breathing and placing a stent at the site of collapse. Using radiographic images, determine stent size accurately. For a comparison of identical condition, all intraluminal stents were placed 10 mm caudal from larynx to 10 mm cranial from carina. In this study, new nitinol stents improve the problems of conventional stents and may be effective in the treatment of tracheal collapse in small dogs.
