Internet of Things Fundamentals, Architectures, Challenges and Solutions: A Survey

  • As the number of people using the Internet increases, a new application known as the Internet of Things (IoT) has been emerged. Internet of Things makes it easier for machines and objects to exchange, compute, and coordinate information autonomously without human interference. It is a tool for attaching intelligence to a variety of contemporary objects in houses, hospitals, buildings, vehicles, and even cities. As a new emerging technology, the focus in current IoT surveys does not shed the light on deep understanding for IoT fundamentals, architectures, challenges, and solutions. For this reason, the objective of this paper is to introduce specifications for IoT definitions, characteristics, functional blocks, and different architectures as a cement for better understanding. Additionally, we present current documented IoT challenges, with the existing available solution for each challenge.

  • Fog computing diversifies cloud computing by using edge devices to provide computing, data storage, communication, management, and control services. As it has a decentralised infrastructure that is capable of amalgamating with cloud computing as well as providing real-time data analysis, it is an emerging method of using multidisciplinary domains for a variety of applications; such as the IoT, Big Data, and smart cities. This present study provides an overview of the security and privacy concerns of fog computing. It also examines its fundamentals and architecture as well as the current trends, challenges, and potential methods of overcoming issues in fog computing.

Sorting for Plastic Bottles Recycling using Machine Vision Methods

  • Due to the increase in population and consequently the increase in the production of plastic waste, recovery of this part of the waste is an undeniable necessity. On the other hand, the recycling of plastic waste, if it is placed in a systematic process and controlled, can be effective in creating jobs and maintaining environmental health. Waste collection in many large cities has become a major problem due to lack of proper planning with increasing waste from population accumulation and changing consumption patterns. Today, waste management is no longer limited to waste collection, but waste collection is one of the important areas of its management, i.e. training, segregation, collection, recycling and processing. In this study, a systematic method based on machine vision for sorting plastic bottles in different colors for recycling purposes will be proposed. In this method, image classification and segmentation techniques were presented to improve the performance of plastic bottle classification. Evaluation of the proposed method and comparison with previous works showed the proper performance of this method.

Policy Implications of Creative-Based Strategies and Culture-Art Creative Urban Policy in Japan: Focusing on Kanazawa and Yokohama (일본의 문화예술창조도시정책과 창조기반전략의 정책적 함의: 가나자와와 요코하마를 중심으로)

  • This study examines the characteristics of creative city policy for Japanese culture and arts creation cities and finds the implications of culture and arts city policy by reexamining the examples of Kanazawa and Yokohama from the viewpoint of creation-based strategy of the city. The policy implications of creative-based strategies are as follows. First, in terms of the governance of the creative-based strategy, Kanazawa conducted governance through a citizen-led cooperative network, while Yokohama promoted creative city policy through a local government-led cooperative network. Second, The mechanism of action of the endogenous resources of Kanazawa and Yokohama was different. Third, the territorial embeddedness in Kanazawa and Yokohama was easy for pedestrians to access to the customer center in the creation core area. Both cities have good access to domestic and international demand, and amenity is well established.

Investigation on the Validation for Designating Air Quality Control Region among Provincial Cities by the Data Measured with Air Quality Monitoring Network (대기오염 측정 자료에 의한 지방도시의 대기환경규제지역 설정에 관한 타당성 검토)

  • Regional air quality regulation is a system that allows the Minister of Environment to designate the local area as air quality control region where the concentrations of air pollutants are exceeding the environmental standards, and the local governments that administrate the regulated area have to develop and practise a plan for reducing the air pollutants. From the data observed yearly by the monitoring stations in 8 provincial cities with more than 0.5 million people was judged the compliance with air quality standards in each municipality for the period of 2003 to 2013. As the result of investigation on air pollutants concentrations of each city, it was found that there was no station that exceeds the ambient air quality standards of CO, $SO_2$ and 24-hour $NO_2$. But all municipalities exceeded the standards of 8-hour $O_3$, annual and 24-hour $PM_{10}$, and therefore 8 municipalities can be designated to be under the local air regulation. For the annual $NO_2$ were the monitoring sites necessary requirements for designation of the air quality regulation region in Cheongju, Cheonan, Daejeon and Gwangju area. Incase of 1-hour $O_3$, some of stations in Pohang, Cheongju, Cheonan and Changwon area were over the designation standards for the air quality control region.

  • As creative city is increasingly considered as a paradigm of urban development, it was explored that some of major concepts consisting of creative city such as creativity, creative class and creative industry have an implication. Those concepts reveal a diverse meaning rather than universal one in the application depending on regions and countries across the world. This study tried to grasp the meaning of creative city in the northern region of Gyeongbook where the concept itself was not apparently distinctive. The result is that the inherent meaning of creative city was expanded to culture and athletic fields, though it was originated from taking advantage of nature, agricultural products in the region, and cultural and historical based tourism. On the other hand, the role of regional authority was examined to explore how the concept of creative city is realized in practice. There are some differences among the local authorities in the aspect of leadership. network system within the region, and social network with outside.

Violence Recognition using Deep CNN for Smart Surveillance Applications (스마트 감시 애플리케이션을 위해 Deep CNN을 이용한 폭력인식)

  • Due to the recent developments in computer vision technology, complex actions can be recognized with reasonable accuracy in smart cities. In contrast, violence recognition such as events related to fight and knife, has gained less attention. The capability of visual surveillance can be used for detecting fight in streets or in prison centers. In this paper, we proposed a deep learning-based violence recognition method for surveillance cameras. A convolutional neural network (CNN) model is trained and fine-tuned on available benchmark datasets of fights and knives for violence recognition. When an abnormal event is detected, an alarm can be sent to the nearest police station to take immediate action. Moreover, when the probabilities of fight and knife classes are predicted very low, this situation is considered as normal situation. The experimental results of the proposed method outperformed other state-of-the-art CNN models with high margin by achieving maximum 99.21% accuracy.

  • Within an intelligent automated cyber-physical system, the realization of the autonomous mechanism for data collection, data integration, and data analysis plays a critical role in the design, development, operation, and maintenance of such a system. This construct is particularly vital for fault-tolerant route-finding systems that rely on the imprecise GPS location of the vehicles to properly operate, timely plan, and continuously produce informative feedback to the user. More essentially, the integration of digital twins with cyber-physical route-finding systems has been overlooked in intelligent transportation services with the capacity to construct the network routes solely from the locations of the operating vehicles. To address this limitation, the present study proposes a conceptual architecture that employs digital twin to autonomously maintain, update, and manage intelligent transportation systems. This virtual management simulation can improve the accuracy of time-of-arrival prediction based on auto-generated routes on which the vehicle's real-time location is mapped. To that end, first, an intelligent transportation system was developed based on two primary mechanisms: 1) an automated route finding process in which predictive data-driven models (i.e., regularized least-squares regression) can elicit the geometry and direction of the routes of the transportation network from the cloud of geotagged data points of the operating vehicles and 2) an intelligent mapping process capable of accurately locating the vehicles on the map whereby their arrival times to any point on the route can be estimated. Afterward, the digital representations of the physical entities (i.e., vehicles and routes) were simulated based on the auto-generated routes and the vehicles' locations in near-real-time. Finally, the feasibility and usability of the presented conceptual framework were evaluated through the comparison between the primary characteristics of the physical entities with their digital representations. The proposed architecture can be used by the vehicle-tracking applications dependent on geotagged data for digital mapping and location tracking of vehicles under a systematic comparison and simulation cyber-physical system.

Delineating Forest Patches around the Geumbuk Mountains from a Landscape Ecological Perspective (금북정맥 주변 산림조각의 경관생태학적 해석)

  • The objective of this study was to delineate forest patches in the cities around the Geum-buk mountains at the north of the Geum River using multiplesatellite remote sensing data. Landsat visible and near-infrared satellite images obtained at multiple dates in the growing season were used to create a forest distribution map. Fragstats 3.3 was used to get the landscape indices delineating the distribution of forest patches. Additional ground truth data was used to assess the accuracy of the classification. Factor analysis was used to get the 26 landscape indices clustered into 4 factors. Factor I was labeled as' size of forest patches', factor II as 'fragmentation of forest patches', factor III as 'shape of forest patches', and factor IV as 'complexity of forest patches'. Factor I described large patches and their core area, while others did small patches and their shape and complexity. Cities including Cheonan, Gongju, Cheongyang, and Boryeong near the main ridge of the Geumbuk Mtns. had a small number of large-sized forest patches. However, cities including Taean, Seosan, Dangjin, Hongseong near the ridge of the western Geumbuk Mtns. had a large number of small-sized forest patches. Finally, this study showed that the region near the coast line in Chung-nam province has various types of forest patches having an irregular forest edge due to the elevation and slope lower than the one of the region far from the coast line which is near the ridge of the Geum-buk Mountains. Remote sensing data were useful to understand the distribution of forest patches, and landscape indices could be keys to delineate the relationship between forest patches. And the factor analysis, which simplified 26 landscape indices into 4 landscape patterns allowed us to understand the distribution and relationship of forest patches in an easy way.

Design and Implementation of Distributed Parking Space Management Service in Scalable LPWA-Based Networks (대규모 LPWA기반 네트워크에서 분산된 주차 공간 관리서비스의 설계 및 구현)

  • Due to the development of cities and the increase of vehicles, effective control of parking space management service in cities is needed. However, the existing parking lot management system does not provide limited or convenient service in terms of space and time. In this paper, we propose distributed parking space management service based on large scale LPWA (Low-Power Wide-Area). The parking sensor collects parking space information from the parking lot and is transmitted over a low-power wide network. All parking data is processed and analyzed in the IoT cloud. Through a parking space management service system in all cities, users are given the temporal convenience of determining the parking space and the area efficiency of the parking space.
