  • Spawning behavior and early life history of the tuman river sculpin, Cottus hangiongensis were studied in the laboratory and in the field at Wangpi Stream, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea, from January to December, 2007. The spawning ground was in the lower Wangpi Stream, which is a shallow region about 40cm or less in depth. During the spawning period, from March to April, mature males made nest cavities under stone 10 which they led a gravid female. The male and female then turned upside down, and spawning and fertilization occurred onto the ceiling of the nest cavity. After spawning, the male chased the female from the nest and mated with several other females. Fertilized eggs were spherical in shape, demersal, adhesive, transparent and yellow in color, measuring 1.86 mm (1.79~1.93 mm) in diameter. A mean of 17(12~22) various-sized oil globules were counted in the yolk. Granular materials formed a mass in the yolk. Fertilized eggs hatched at 256 hrs, 10 minutes after the morula stage under water temperature of $15.0{\sim}18.0^{\circ}C$. Newly hatched larvae 9.34 mm (9.02~9.69 mm. n=10) in total length (TL) had a large yolk At 14 days after hatching, larvae 11.40 mm (11.07~11.72 mm, n=10) in TL transformed to the postlarval stage. At 41 days after hatching, postlarvae of 18.42 mm (17.31~18.62 mm, n=10) in TL had reached the juvenile stage. The result of this study indicate that Cottus hangiongensis has the spawning ground in the lower stream and the amphidromous life history which is the different from that of Cottus poecilopus.

  • The increase of human activities has been extensively changed the breeding habitats of birds directly or indirectly, where the reproductive success of the birds has been seriously reduced. Leisure activities on water, such as fishing, influenced the breeding biology of waterfowls. However, few researches have been done for this in Korea. We examined the effects of fishing activity on nest selection and density of four waterfowl species at Namyang Lake: Coot (Fulica atra), Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), Little Grebe (Podiceps ruficollis), and Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus). We divided the Namyang Lake into three study areas. Except for the number of anglers, there were no significant differences among the three study areas in the kinds of avian predators, the water depth around study areas measured for possible territorial predatory mammals' passing over, and the values of Relative Importance Percentage of occupying plants. The results showed that waterfowls bred in Namyang Lake preferred the areas with few anglers for the nests. From this study, we recommend that leisure activities including fishing should be prohibited or restricted during the breeding periods of waterfowls for the stable breeding success and that further systematic researches and managements for the species are necessary.

  • Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of enrichment resources (a perch, dustbath, and nest) layout in furnished laying-hen cages (FC) on exterior quality of eggs. Methods: One hundred and sixty-eight (168) Hy-Line Brown laying hens at 16 weeks of age were randomly distributed to four treatments: small furnished cages (SFC), medium furnished cages type I (MFC-I), medium furnished cages type II (MFC-II), and medium furnished cages type III (MFC-III). Each treatment had 4 replicates or cages with 6 hens for SFC (24 birds for each SFC) and 12 hen/cage for MFC-I, -II, and -III (48 birds for each MFC-I, -II and -III). Following a 2-week acclimation, data collection started at 18 weeks of age and continued till 52 weeks of age. Dirtiness of egg surface or cracked shell as indicators of the exterior egg quality were recorded each week. Results: The results showed that the proportion of cracked or dirty eggs was significantly affected by the FC type (p<0.01) in that the highest proportion of cracked or dirty eggs was found in MFC-I and the lowest proportion of dirty eggs in SFC. The results of this showed that furnished cage types affected both dirty eggs and cracked eggs (p<0.01). The results also indicated that not nest but dustbath lead to more dirty eggs. Only MFC-I had higher dirty eggs at nest than other FC (p<0.01). The results of dirty eggs in MFC-I and MFC-II compared with SFC and MFC-III seemed suggest that a low position of dustbath led to more dirty eggs. Conclusion: SFC design affected exterior egg quality and the low position of dustbath in FC resulted in higher proportion of dirty eggs.

  • In this study we tried to develop a biological method for evaluating environment using the potter wasps as an indicator. Wasp species in family Eumenidae, were collected from 13 locations including agricultural area using nest trap. The wasps collected were classified and selected candidate species as an environmental evaluation indicator. Seven species were collected and the Anterhynchium flavomarginatum was the most dominant species. The number of the nest of potter wasps was 12.8/m both in the non-fertilizer and the non-pesticide areas and 7.2/m in the general agricultural areas. The number of nests was 13.4/m in the location where the Degree of Green Naturality (DGN) was high (4.28) and it was 1.2/m where the DGN was low (1.00), suggesting that the index of both richness and diversity tend to increase in locations with more nests. Based on these results, A. flavomarginatum, Orancistrocerus drewseni (Saussure), Isodontia nigellus and Chalicodoma sculpturalis were selected as indicator species for the evaluation of environment including agricultural ecosystem. And a standard for grading an environment (I to IV) was made based on the occurrence, the total number of nesting and the species diversity of potter wasps.

  • Sexual dimorphism in birds refers to male-female differences in body size, plumage, color and/or behavior. In general, many seabirds, including the family of Laridae, are monomorphic in plumage-color, which makes the determination of sex difficult in the field because both parents also tend to share a great portion of parental care. The development of an inexpensive sexing tool facilitates understanding the degree of sex-specific parental care in the evolution of the life history. Here, we developed a non-invasive method for the determination of sex using the bill-head morphometric of known captive pairs and applied this tool to wild pairs to document factors underlying male-female parental care during the incubation period of Saunders's gulls (Saundersilarus saundersi). Males exhibited relatively larger bill-head ratios than their mates within naturally formed pairs in captivity, resulting in the determination of sex in12 wild pairs at the nest during the incubation period. Males and females equally shared the incubation role during the daytime, attending the nest at a high rate of 95%. However, the male's proportion of nest attentiveness greatly increased with time towards sunset, presumably reflecting the male duty for nighttime incubation. The present study provides a non-invasive method for the determination of sex in a monomorphic seagull species and highlights how male-female incubation behavior is associated with time of the day, rather than other ecological conditions.

  • Given operators X and Y acting on a Hilbert space H, an interpolating operator is a bounded operator A such that AX = Y. An interpolating operator for n-operators satisfies the equation AX$\sub$i/=Y$\sub$i/, for i=1,2, ‥‥, R. In this article, we investigate Hilbert-Schmidt interpolation for operators in tridiagonal algebras.

  • We consider an algorithm for the Crew Scheduling Problem (CSP) based on the Transportation Problem approach. The main flows of the algorithm are arranged in three steps. First we propose a heuristic algorithm of the greedy principle to obtain an initial feasible solution. Secondary we present a method of formulating CSP into a Modified Transportation Problem format. Lastly the procedures of network search to get the optimal solution are presented. This algorithm can be applied to the general GSP and also to most combinatorial problems like the Vehicle Routing Problems. The computational results show that the large size CSP's could be tackled.

  • This paper reports the developing and manufacturing process of polymeric crossarms in place of conventional crossarms made of steel used for overhead lines. The use of insulated crossarms has been mandatory in order to achieve the required line compaction in the pole. The developed polymer crossarm is characterised by significantly less weight, easier handling, much longer insulation length which leading to reduce the flashover outage from bird nest.
