  • Objectives : To study autonomic nervous system dysfunction of Low Back Pain(LBP) patients, using spectral analysis of Heart Rate Variability(HRV). Methods : HRV of 190 patients was measured and seperated into two groups, those with LBP(n=95) and healthy controls(n=95). HRV was measured by SA-6000(Medicore, Korea) for 5 minutes after 5 minutes' resting. Results : 1. Mean heart rate(MHRT) of the experimental group was slightly higher than that of the control group, but did not show significant difference(P=0.428). The square root of the mean squared differences of successive normal-to-normal intervals(RMSSD), logarithmic very low frequency power(Ln VLF) and low frequency power/high frequency power ratio(LH/HF ratio) were not significantly low between experimental group and control group(P=0.16, 0.130, 0.537). 2. The standard deviation of all the normal-to-normal intervals(SDNN), logarithmic total power(Ln TP), logarithmic low frequency power(Ln LF) and logarithmic high frequency power(Ln HF) were significantly low between experimental group and control group(P=0.03, 0.005, 0.001, 0.007). 3. Ln LF of acute group was significantly low compared with those of chronic group(P= 0.039). Conclusions : This study suggests the activity and imbalance of autonomic nervous system in LBP is low. Also sympathetic nervous system of acute LBP is lower than that of chronic LBP. Further study of HRV related to LBP is needed in the clinical medicine.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of Taegeuk acupuncture on reducing mental stress by analyzing heart rate variability in Soyangin. Methods : Eight Soyangin-diagnosed women participated in this study. They were randomly divided into group A and group B. Each participant went through 3 sessions every week with 1 week of washout period in between each session. HRV was measured three times at every session; at baseline, after administering mentally stressful circumstances and after applying either one of simple rest, Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture or Soeumin Taegeuk acupuncture. This study was designed as a crossover clinical trial. After same initial simple resting session for both groups at week 1, acupuncture for group A were executed in the order of Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture and Soeumin Taegeuk acupuncture at week 2 and 3 respectively, with acupuncture for group B conducted in reverse order. Results : Simple rest and Soeumin Taegeuk acupuncture did not show the significant changes in response to LF(norm) and HF(norm) after stress stimuli. Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture did, however, significantly decrease LF(norm) and increase HF(norm). Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture, compared to Soeumin Taegeuk acupuncture, significantly stabilized autonomic nervous system. Conclusions : This study suggests that Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture might be an effective means of stabilizing mental stress-induced imbalance of autonomic nervous system for Soyangin.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of aroma inhalation therapy on stress, anxiety, depression, and an autonomic nervous system reaction in high-risk hospitalized pregnant women. Methods: A quasiexperimental study used a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design. Fifty high-risk hospitalized pregnant women were selected as participants on delivery room and maternity ward at university hospital. Twenty-five were selected for the experimental group while 25 were assigned to a control group. Neroli essential oil was used for aroma therapy and was already identified as not being hazard to pregnant women. It provided emotional stability from previous study. The participants inhaled Neroli 2 minutes, 3 times (9 am to 10 am, 4 pm to 5 pm, just before sleep) a day. A total of 15 sessions were held from the day of the preliminary investigation. Pre and post written survey and measuring an autonomic nervous system reaction were collected from both groups. Results: The data were analyzed by $x^2$ test, t-test, and paired t-test. There was a statistically significant difference in stress (t=-3.98, p<.001) between the experimental group and the control group. Conclusion: These findings indicate that aroma inhalation therapy is effective as a nursing intervention for the stress relief of hospitalized high-risk pregnant women.

  • Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been proposed as an alternative therapy to be applied into several pathologies of the nervous system. These cells can be obtained from adipose tissue, umbilical cord blood and bone marrow, among other tissues, and have remarkable therapeutic properties. MSCs can be isolated with high yield, which adds to their ability to differentiate into non-mesodermal cell types including neuronal lineage both in vivo and in vitro. They are able to restore damaged neural tissue, thus being suitable for the treatment of neural injuries, and possess immunosuppressive activity, which may be useful for the treatment of neurological disorders of inflammatory etiology. Although the long-term safety of MSC-based therapies remains unclear, a large amount of both pre-clinical and clinical trials have shown functional improvements in animal models of nervous system diseases following transplantation of MSCs. In fact, there are several ongoing clinical trials evaluating the possible benefits this cell-based therapy could provide to patients with neurological damage, as well as their clinical limitations. In this review we focus on the potential of MSCs as a therapeutic tool to treat neurological disorders, summarizing the state of the art of this topic and the most recent clinical studies.

  • WooHwangChungSimWon is a traditional medicine for treatment of hypertension, arteriosclerosis, coma, and stroke in China, Korea, and Japan. In the new prescription of WooHwangChungSimWon, the civet is substituted for the musk, the major component of WooHwangChungSimwon, because of the prohibition law about the musk. We have made a comparative study of the effects on the central nervous system between the musk containing and civet containing WooHwangChungSimWon. In order to investigate the effects on the central nervous system, we have examined spontaneous motor activities, anti-convulsion activities induced by chemicals or electric shock, sleep induced by hexobarbital, and antistress effects. In the examination of anti-convulsion effects against the electric shock and injection of pentetrazol, only the civet containing WooHwangChungSimWon showed the anti-convulsion effects, i.e. the duration of convulsion by electric shock was decreased (control: 104.0 seconds, low dose of civet containing WooHwangChungSimWon: 60.7 seconds) and the duration of suppression against pentetrazol induced convulsion was increased (control: 392.3 seconds, low dose of civet containing WooHwangChungSimWon: 574.0 seconds, high dose of civet containing WooHwangChungSimWon: 561.4 seconds). In the other examinations, all kinds of WooHwangChungSimWon showed sedation, anti-convulsion activities, and induction of sleeping. These results suggest that there are no significant differences between the musk containing and civet containing WooHwangChungSimWon except the anti-convulsion effects against the convulsions induced by electric shock and pentetrazol.

  • Objectives : Early life stress (ELS) may have impact on functions of the autonomic nervous system. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a reliable psychophysiological marker for functions of the autonomic nervous system. The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of HRV associated with ELS in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Methods : We compared HRV measures of MDD patients with ELS and without ELS in a 5-minute resting-state electrocardiogram recoding. Forty subjects participated in the study (25 with ELS, 15 without ELS). The Mann-Whitney test was conducted to identify group differences. Results : We found significant group differences in standard deviation of the NN interval (SDNN) and total power (TP). SDNN was lower in the ELS group (M=38.80 ms, SD=13.05 ms) than in the Non-ELS group (M=53.53 ms, SD=19.47 ms). TP was lower in the ELS group ($M=7.07ms^2$, $SD=0.69ms^2$) than in the Non-ELS group ($M=7.72ms^2$, $SD=0.77ms^2$). Conclusion : ELS may have a negative impact on the autonomic nervous system function in patients with MDD. ELS and dysfunction of autonomic nervous system should be considered in treatment for patients with MDD.

  • Objectives: This study is designed to identify the responses of autonomic nervous system and gastrointestinal function which are induced by acupuncture at abdominal anterior cutaneous nerve. Methods: This study is one group before and after pilot study. Subjects were treated once, after having been fasting six hours. They had before tests, labeling points for acupuncture, acupuncture, and after tests in order. The points of acupuncture were motor points of rectus abdominis where the abdominal anterior cutaneous nerve came to the skin from abdominal wall. Before and after tests were consisted of three things: Digital Infrared Thermographic Imaging(D.I.T.I.), Heart Rate Variability(HRV), and Recording of bowel sounds. Results: There were significant differences on the skin temperature of upper body and the frequency of bowel sounds(p<0.001, p<0.001). The HRV parameters and volume of bowel sounds had no significant differences(p>0.05, p>0.05). Conclusion: Even though no significant differences in HRV parameters, the significant differences of skin temperature of upper body and frequency of bowel sounds could mean acupuncture at abdominal anterior cutaneous nerve could affect the autonomic nervous system and gastrointestinal function. However, this study had no group to compare with. Future randomized project should address this issue.

  • Intractable hiccups are those which persist for more than one month and can often occur in patients with disorders of the central nervous system, such as stroke, epilepsy, or brain tumor. An 80-year-old male patient undergoing conservative hemodialysis for diabetic nephropathy, recently developed paralysis and dysphagia due to central nervous system complications including stroke and epilepsy. He was admitted to the ◯◯ Oriental Medicine Hospital, and treated with herbal medicine (Gyulpijugyeo-tang, Jeonssiigong-san, and Ijin-tang) and electrical acupuncture for 30 days. No side effects were observed during hospitalization. The frequency and duration of hiccups were measured daily and found to reduce, and the effect persisted during his admission. The patient took no other nervous system drugs. In conclusion, Korean medicine like gyulpijugyeo-tang and acupuncture can be effective for patients with intractable hiccups who cannot use alternative drugs or treatment, because of other complications.
