  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is characterized by various symptoms and multi-organ involvement. Hypophosphatemia has been described in several diseases accompanied with systemic inflammation. However, hypophosphatemia has rarely been described in SLE patients, especially in those without nephritis. We report the case of a 13-year-old girl with SLE who developed hypophosphatemia without renal involvement. Her hypophosphatemia was caused by renal loss of phosphorus and persisted for 7 months. It improved as her complement levels increased. Therefore, hypophosphatemia may be related to disease activity in SLE patients.

  • Korean folk medicine 'Jeob Gol Mog' has been used to cure nephritis, hypoacidity rheumatis, gastrectasis, and fracture of bone. With regard to the botanical origin of 'Jeob Gol Mog', it has been considered to be Sambucus species of Caprifoliaceae, but there has no pharmacognostical confirmation on it. Morphological and anatomical examination of Sambucus stem show that 'Jeob Gol Mog' was the stem of Sambucus sieboldiana var. miquelii and S. williamsii var. coreana.

  • Spirodela polyrrhiza L. Schleid. (Lemnaceae), also known as 'duckweed', is a traditional medicine in Korea. The whole plant is used to treat many diseases, including the common cold, edema, acute nephritis, and urticaria. The present study investigated antinociceptive properties of the EtOAc soluble fraction of S. polyrrhiza (ESP). The antinociceptive activities of ESP were studied using experimental models of pain, including thermal nociception methods, such as the tail immersion test and the hotplate test. Moreover, we studied chemical nociception induced by intraperitoneal acetic acid and subplantar formalin in mice. ESP exhibited dose-dependent antinociceptive activity in both thermal and chemical pain models. In a drug combination test using the opioid receptor antagonist naloxone, diminished analgesic activities of ESP were observed, indicating that the antinociceptive activity of ESP is mediated by opioid receptors.

  • Background and Objective : Allergic purpura is a generalized vasculitis characterized by cutaneous purpura, art hritis, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding and nephritis. However, the pathophysiology of the Allergic purpura remains obscure. Treatment at present is symptomatic and supportive. There is few reports on Allergic purpura treated with oriental medical treatment. Methods : We conducted two patients with Allergic purpura seen at Won-Kwang University Ik-San Oriental Medical Hospital. We treated Allergic purpura by a herbal medicine, acupunture, etc. Conclusions : We suggest that the oriental medical treatment and management have an effect with Allergic purpura which means Podoyug in Oriental medicine.

  • The incidence of nephritis associated with Henoch-Sch nlein purpura varies, but glomerulonephritis consistently accounts for most of the associated morbidity and mortality. A very small number of Henoch-Sch nlein purpura develop rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis. A three-year old male patient who showed acute nephritic nephrotic syndrome developed abdominal pain, arthralgia and multiple purpurae on lower extremities later. Peritoneal dialysis was done at the 6th hospital day and continued for 7 months. Renal biopsy disclosed crescentic glomerulonephritis (with 81% crescent formation) and methylprednisolone pulse therapy was done. These days, his general condition is good, but serum creatinine levels are 1.2-1.3 mg/dL. This case was reviewed briefly with the literatures.

  • In the present studies, samples of blood were taken from 24 Holstein cattle over 2 years old. By using the angled tube method the normal ESR values were determined in cattle under various diseases. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; The standardized ESR/hr using 45$^{\circ}$ angled capillary tubes were 19.0% in case of necrotic mastitis, 23.0% in nephritis, 12.2% in anemia and 4.2% in diarrhea. And the ESR was increased from some necrotic disease, decreased from diarrhea conditions and general the normal ESRs were shown in the sub-clinical or recovery stage of infections or disorders.

  • Rifampin is a bactericidal antibiotic used primarily in the treatment of tuberculosis. The adverse effects of rifampin, though few, include dermatologic, gastrointestinal, and hepatic manifestations. Occasionally it produces a flu-like syndrome, interstitial nephritis, hemolytic anemia, and thrombocytopenia. These manifestations usually appear in patients who take the drug intermittently. We experienced a 13 year-old girl who developed thrombocytopenia during rifampin administration of daily dosage, therefore we report a brief review with the related literatures.

  • Asian Americans is a minority population contributing approximately 4% to the total population of the United States, however it is one of the fastest growing populations. Although Asian Americans as a group have socioeconomic profiles that are similar to white Americans, significant variations exists within and across Asian ethnic groups. The top ten leading causes of death for Asian Americans includes cancer, heart diseases, stroke, unintentional injuries, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia, chronic lower respiratory disease, suicide, nephritis, and septicemia. The prevalence of obesity is lower among Asian Americans, however this should be taken with considerations specific to Asians. High salt and low calcium consumption seem to be dietary risk factors for Asian Americans, although dietary patterns are changing with acculturation. Factors affecting dietary patterns are discussed in this paper. A proactive nutrition education approach for Asian Americans should be promoting maintaining 'healthy' aspects of ethnic diets and adopting 'healthy' American diets. Collaboration with nutrition educators in Asian countries would be helpful to overcome limited resources available for researching and developing nutrition education messages and materials for Asian Americans. • Normal Albino rats were received glycerin via subcutaneously and Staphylococcus aureus intravenously. The microorganism was coagulase-positive and non-hemolytic. The rats received glycerin alone showed an acute tubular nephrosis, and the others such as glycer in induced nephrotic rats showed a number of different findings: At the first hours of the bacterial injection, in medulla, the bacterial clumps and inflammatory cell infiltration, and microabscesses with retrogressive changes of proximal convoluted tubulles were observed. The suppurative inflammation was observed in days. Five weeks after the initial innoulation of the organism kidney was shown restoration to a histologically normal cortex. The proliferation of fibrous connective tissue and small numbers of chronic inflammatory cells were observed in the medulla where an acute inflammatory process was enhanced presumably. On the other hand, the Albino rats administered Staphyloceccus aureus alone resulted in n moderate degree of vacuolization in proximal convoluted tubules and a number of casts in the early stage. No, bacterial clumps and microabscesses were observed in the rats.

  • The earthworm(Annelid) is a herbicine which has traditionally been used in the treatment of infectious fever, jaundice, infection of middle ear, laryngitis, pharyngitis, nephritis, headache, toothache and certain urinary tract infections from the olden times. Before the isolation and purification of biologically active components we analyzed the basic constituents(proteins, amino acids, mineral, etc.) with lyophilized powder of Lamnodrilus gotai Hatai. The results were as follows: Minerals detected and quantitatively analyzed were $Ca^#$, $Mg^#$, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Co, Cr, Ni, Ge and Se. Amino acids detected were alanine, phenylalanine, leucine, glutamic acid, tyrosine, threonine, arginine, aspartic acid, methionine, lysine, serine, histidine, isoleucine, glycine, proline and etc. The constituents of proteins, fat, fiber, ash and phosphorous were measured. These constituents were compared and discussed with those of other investigations.
