Some cytotoxicity studies for the interpretation of the interaction between nanoparticles and cells are non-mechanistic and time-consuming. Therefore, non-biological screening methods, which are faster and simpler than in-vivo and in-vitro methods, are required as alternatives to current cytotoxicity tests. Here, we proposed a simple screening method for the analysis of the interaction between several AgNPs (bare-, citrate-, and polyvinylpyrrolidone-coating) and dye-containing vesicles acting as a biomimetic cell-membrane. The interaction between AgNPs and vesicles could be evaluated readily by UV-vis spectra. Absorbance deviation in UV-vis spectra revealed a large attraction between neighboring particles and vesicles. This was confirmed by (Derjagin, Landau, Verwey, and Overbeek) theory and DMF (dark-field microscopy) analysis. This proposed method might be useful for analyzing the cytotoxicity of nanoparticles with cell-membranes instead of in vitro or in vivo cytotoxicity tests.

In multicellular wireless networks, intercell interference limits system performance, especially cell edge user performance. One promising approach to solve this problem is the intercell interference coordination (ICIC) scheme. In this paper, we propose a new ICIC scheme based on a resource partitioning approach to enhance cell edge user performance in a wireless multicellular system. The most important feature of the proposed scheme is that the algorithm is performed at each base station in a distributed manner and therefore minimizes the required information exchange between neighboring base stations. The proposed scheme has benefits in a practical environment where the traffic load distribution is not uniform among base stations and the backhaul capacity between the base stations is limited.
TD-SCDMA combines TDMA and CDMA components to provide more efficient use of radio resources. However, since the same frequency band is used in both the uplink and downlink, serious interference may occur if the base stations are not synchronized. The interference caused by different transmission directions between neighboring cells is called cross-slot interference. This paper proposes a data rate control algorithm that can decrease the cross-slot interference in TD-SCDMA.
In the present study, a mechanical model is applied to account the effects of the surrounding viscoelastic media on the buckling behavior of single microfilament within the cell. The model immeasurably associates filament's bending rigidity, neighboring system elasticity, and cytosol viscosity with buckling wavelengths, buckling growth rates and buckling amplitudes of the filament. Cytoskeleton components in living cell bear large compressive force and are responsible in maintaining the cell shape. Actually these filaments are surrounded by viscoelastic media consisting of other filaments network and viscous cytosole within the cell. This surrounding, viscoelastic media affects the buckling behavior of these filaments when external force is applied on these filaments. The obtained results, indicate that the coupling of viscoelastic media with the viscous cytosol greatly affect the buckling behavior of microfilament. The buckling forces increased with the increase in the intensity of surrounding viscoelastic media.
This paper proposes a coordinated multi-point communication (CoMP) method with channel selection to improve performance of a macro user equipment (MUE) in a dense small-cell network environment in a building located within coverage of a macro base station (MBS). In the proposed CoMP method, in order to improve the performance of the MUE located in the building, A small-cell base station (SBS) selects a channel with lower interference to the neighboring MUE and transmits appropriate signals to the MUE requiring CoMP. Simulation results show that the proposed CoMP method improves the performance of the MUE by up to 164% and 51%, respectivley, compared to a random channel allocation based traditional SBS network and CoMP method.

Toxoplasma gondii infection induces alteration of the host cell cycle and cell proliferation. These changes are not only seen in directly invaded host cells but also in neighboring cells. We tried to identify whether this alteration can be mediated by exosomes secreted by T. gondii-infected host cells. L6 cells, a rat myoblast cell line, and RH strain of T. gondii were selected for this study. L6 cells were infected with or without T. gondii to isolate exosomes. The cellular growth patterns were identified by cell counting with trypan blue under confocal microscopy, and cell cycle changes were investigated by flow cytometry. L6 cells infected with T. gondii showed decreased proliferation compared to uninfected L6 cells and revealed a tendency to stay at S or G2/M cell phase. The treatment of exosomes isolated from T. gondii-infected cells showed attenuation of cell proliferation and slight enhancement of S phase in L6 cells. The cell cycle alteration was not as obvious as reduction of the cell proliferation by the exosome treatment. These changes were transient and disappeared at 48 hr after the exosome treatment. Microarray analysis and web-based tools indicated that various exosomal miRNAs were crucial for the regulation of target genes related to cell proliferation. Collectively, our study demonstrated that the exosomes originating from T. gondii could change the host cell proliferation and alter the host cell cycle.

The mobile station which is about to do handover in IEEE 802.16e networks scans its neighboring base station channels to decide its next target base station. However, due to the lack of location information of its subscribers, the serving base station cannot provide any reliable candidate channel which is actually attachable by the scanning mobile stations, which makes the mobile station suffer from the long scanning time. Sometimes, long scanning time may cause the degradation of quality of service due to repeatable scan-duration or failure to start the handover procedure in time. To overcome these problems, in this paper, we propose a new protocol so called fast group scanning scheme, in which multiple mobile stations form a group to scan their neighboring base station channels simultaneously. Main contribution of this proposal is to find and decide a reliable target base station within a short scanning time. The fast group scanning scheme can be deployed to the cell network of the serving base station with a dynamic neighboring base station list management.

Intercellular nutrient and signal transduction are essential to sustaining multicellular organisms and maximizing the benefits of multicellularity. It has long been believed that red algal intercellular transport of macromolecules is prevented by the protein-rich pit plug within pit-connections, the only physical connection between cells. Fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran and recombinant green fluorescence protein (rGFP) of various molecular sizes were injected into vegetative cells of Griffithsia monilis using a micromanipulator, and intercellular transport of the fluorescent probes was examined. Pit-connections were found to provide intercellular transport of tracers at rates comparable to plasmodesmata in other organisms. The time necessary for the transport to an adjacent cell was dependent on the molecular size and the direction of the transport. Fluorescent dextran of 3 kDa was transported to adjacent cells in 1-2 h after injection and migrated to all cells of the filament within 24 h, but fluorescent dextran of 10-20 kDa took 24 h to transfer to neighboring cells. The migration occurred faster towards adjacent reproductive cells and to apical cells than basally. Fluorescent tracers above 40 kDa and rGFP was not transported to neighboring cells, but accumulated near the pit plug. Our results suggest that pit-connections are conduit for macromolecules between neighboring cells and that these size-specific conduits allow intercellular communication between the vegetative cells of red algae.

The dynamic behavior of numerous grains interacting with each other can be easily observed. In this study, this dynamic behavior was analyzed based on the contact between numerous grains. The discrete element method was used for analyzing the dynamic behavior of each particle and the neighboring-cell algorithm was employed for detecting their contact. The Hertzian and tangential sliding friction contact models were used for calculating the contact force acting between the particles. A GPU-based parallel program was developed for conducting the computer simulation and calculating the numerous contacts. The dam break experiment was performed to verify the simulation results. The reliability of the program was verified by comparing the results of the simulation with those of the experiment.

In this paper, the effect of ISI(Inter-Symbol Interference) and ICI(Inter-Carrier Interference) due to time difference of arrival on OFDMA-based mobile multi-hop relay (MMR) systems is analyzed. Analyses are performed for the ISI caused by the previous OFDMA symbol transmitted from neighboring macro or relay cell as well as the ISI caused by the next OFDMA symbol transmitted from neighboring macro or relay cell. Then, an effective SINR(Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio) estimation method and a path selection method considering time difference of arrival are proposed to minimize the effect of ISI and ICI. It is shown by simulation that the performance degradation caused by time difference of arrival can be significantly mitigated when the proposed path selection method is applied to the uplink of OFDMA-based MMR systems.
