  • The consumption of foods rich in TDF should not be associated with impaired mineral absorp-tion and long-term mineral status. In surveys of populations consuming high amounts of TDF e.g Third World populations and vegetarinas gross deficiencies in mineral nutrition have not been noted. If mineral status is low among these groups it is most likely caused by the inadequacy or imbalance of the diet and not by the TDF. The key word is interaction which should be inte-rpreted in dietary imbalances that produce nut-rient deficiencies. There are no strong data to support the concept that TDF inhibits mineral absorption through a binding chelation mechanism. Limited data sug-gest that positively charged groups on polymers such as chitosan and cholestyramine will decrease iron absorption in humans and animals. Because TDF does not contain positively charged groups future research should be directed at the possible role of protein consumed along with TDF and the combination of effects on mineral nutrition Phytic acid is acknowledged as a potent chela-tor of zinc. However its association with zinc and its propensity to lower Zn bioavaiability may enhance the absorption of other elements notably copper and iron. The importance of interactions among nutrients including TDF will gain addi-tional attention in the scientific community. Soluble and insoluble dietary fiber function di-fferently in the intestine. Insoluble fibers accele-rate movement through the intestine. Soluble die-tary fibers appear to regulated blood concentra-tions of glucose and cholesterol albeit by some unknown mechanism. In creased viscosity produ-ced by the SDF in the intestine may provide an explanation of how this class of polymers affects plasma glucose cholesterol and other nutrients. Employing a double-perfusion technique in the rat we demonstrated that viscosity produced by SDF will delay transfer of zinc into the circulatory system. This delayed absorption should not be interpreted as decreased utilization. A great deal of additional research is required to prove the importance of luminaly viscosity produced by SDF on slowing nutrient absorption or regulating bllod nutrient homeostasis. Increased intake of TDF in the total human diet appears desirable. A dietary intake of 35g/day should not be considered to have a negative effect on mineral absorption. It is important to educate people that an intake of more than 35g TDF/day may cause an imbalance in the diet that can adve-rsely affect mineral utilization. Acknowledgments. • Focal companies (hereafter called buyers) adopt outsourcing practices from a supply chain management strategy to be competitive. Buyers face the bridge transfer after outsourcing contracts, and the monitoring practices would be the only control mechanism left to prevent losing control over the suppliers. This study suggests the set of monitoring practices (i.e., capability, activity and outcome monitoring) as the independent variables to enhance the buyer-supplier collaboration and supplier's performance. In addition the buyer's efforts of monitoring are assumed to influence the buyer's shop floor productivity mediated by the supplier's performance and buyer-supplier collaboration. The results showed that the monitoring practices are meaningful antecedents to the supplier's performance and buyer-supplier collaboration, which fully mediates between the monitoring practices and buyer's shop floor productivity. The mediating role of the buyer-supplier collaboration between activity monitoring and shop floor productive has been rejected, because the negative effect of activity monitoring on buyer-supplier collaboration conflicts with the positive impact of buyer-supplier collaboration on shop floor productive. The theoretical contribution and managerial implications with limitations have been discussed.

  • The paper analyzes the effects of Korean venture businesses' external collaborations on their innovation performances, according to their collaboration partners and collaboration activities. The results show that the collaborations between Korean venture businesses and research institutions, and those between venture businesses and other venture businesses have significant positive effects on venture businesses' innovation performances, in terms of the numbers of the intellectual property rights, while the collaborations between venture businesses and large companies have significant positive effects on medium-sized venture businesses only. In addition, collaborative research and development, and technology transfer from big companies to venture businesses have given significant positive effects on venture businesses' innovation performances, while collaborative employee training and collaborative marketing have given significant negative effects on venture businesses' innovation performances. Furthermore, collaborations between large companies and their subcontracting venture businesses have shown even more significant effects on venture businesses' performances. The results show that the effectiveness of external collaborations of Korean venture businesses depends on collaboration partners, types of collaboration activities, and the size of collaborating venture businesses, implying that government programs for encouraging venture businesses to collaborate with external institutions should be carefully chosen for their innovation performance improvement.

  • Ballast water filled into and discharged from the ballast tank of a ship has a negative impact on local marine environment due to various aquatic organisms contained therein. The IMO developed and adopted "The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004" with the purpose of protecting the marine environment from transfer of harmful aquatic organisms in ballast water carried by ships. The IMO BWM Convention was approved in September 2016 and ships must be equipped with ballast water management system after September 2017. Ships' ballast water treatment methods are divided into using active substances as electrolytic type, ozone type, chemical dosing type and using physical treatment type as filter type, ultraviolet type. It is also used with a combination of two methods. Electrolysis is superior in terms of cost and efficiency. In this study, basic principles, components, and land base test contents of electrolysis ballast water treatment system, a direct electrolyzed ballast water treatment system, were examined. Land base test was conducted with 300m3/h capacity device at the KIOST Geoje plant where the government test facility was installed. This test validated that the system meets IMO standards.

  • Dowel bars in the jointed concrete pavement are used to both provide load transfer across pavements joints and prevent the joint faulting leading to longer service life. On the contrary, the misplacement of dowel bar can provide negative results including the joint freezing(locking) that may cause the joint spatting and unexpected mid-slab cracking. The dowel bar can be placed using the assembly or dowel bar inserter (DBI) during the concrete pavement construction. In the domestic practice of the concrete pavement construction, the dowel bar is placed using the assembly method. This study primarily focuses on the comparison of these two dowel placement methods using the field data from the KHC test road in which both dowel placement methods have been applied to a certain length of the concrete pavement. The field data regarding the alignment of the dowel bars placed by both methods was collected using MIT-SCAN2, a nondestructive measuring equipment, and processed to compute Joint Score and Running Ave. Joint Score which are used as indicators of the dowel bar performance. The comparison of the methods for the dowel bar placement using these indicators shows that the DBI method provided much better alignment of the dowel bars reducing the risk of joint freezing than the assembly method. In order to improve the quality of the dowel bar placement using the assembly method, the current weak points of the assembly method including the fabrication, storage, and installation of dowel bar assembly were investigated and the solution was suggested. The improved dowel bar sets based on the suggested solution have been applied to an actual practice of the concrete pavement construction. The field data shows that the improved assembly method suggested in this study can highly reduce the risk of joint freezing.

  • Ashwagandha is an important ancient medicinal crops, being affected with many diseases, among which leaf blight caused by Alternaria alternata has become the constraint resulting in huge yield losses. Continuous usage of chemical methods leads to environment, soil and water pollution. Whereas biological control of diseases is long lasting, inexpensive, eco-friendly and harmless to target organisms. In this context, it is aimed to evaluate five Trichoderma strains viz. Trichoderma virens IMI-392430, T. pseudokoningii IMI-392431, T. harzianum IMI-392432, T. harzianum IMI-392433 and T. harzianum IMI-392434 as bio-control efficacy against A. alternata and growth promoting effect in Ashwagandha. All the Trichoderma strains had varied antagonistic effects against the pathogen. In dual culture technique, the strain T. harzianum IMI-392433 showed maximum percentage inhibition of mycelial growth (54.89%) followed by T. harzianum IMI-392432 (53.83%), T. harzianum IMI-392434 (48.94%) and T. virens IMI-392430, (43.62%) against the pathogen, while the least inhibition percentage was observed with the T. pseudokoningii IMI-392431 (36.60%). The culture filtrate of the Trichoderma strain, T. harzianum IMI-392433 recorded highest inhibition on the mycelial growth (39.05%) and spore germination (80.77%) of pathogen and the lowest was recorded in T. pseudokoningii IMI-392431 (20.45 and 50%). Moreover, seeds treated with spore suspension of the strain T. harzianum IMI-392433 reduced the percentages of disease severity index significantly. The strain T. harzianum IMI-392433 also significantly increased seed germination %, seedling vigor and growth of Ashwagandha. The correlation matrix showed that root yield per plant of Ashwagandha had significant and positive correlation with plant height (r=0.726⁎⁎), number of leaf (r=0.514⁎⁎), number of primary branch (r=0.820⁎⁎), number of secondary branch (r=0.829⁎⁎), fresh plant weight (r=0.887⁎⁎), plant dry weight (r=0.613⁎⁎), root length (r=0.824⁎⁎), root diameter (r=0.786⁎⁎), root dry weight (r=0.739⁎⁎) and fresh root weight (r=0.731⁎⁎). The significant and negative correlation (r=-0.336⁎⁎) was observed with the root yield and percentages of disease severity index. The study recognized that the T. harzianum IMI-392433 strain performed well in inhibiting the mycelial growth and reduced the percentages of disease severity index of pathogen as well as increased the plant growth in Ashwagandha.

  • Recently, Korean government documented the plan to cope with the situation related to rich pensioners of Basic old-age pension. The purpose of this paper is to verify that how many rich pensioners are existing and to evaluate government reform plan's validity and effect. Main results are as follows; firstly, if the definition of rich pensioners is on the top 10%, the proportion of them would form 2.9% of total. And then, an amount of expenditure for them is only 2.6% of total. Secondly, in terms of disposable income, debt, and transfer income from child, the household who would be applied by government's plan is not richer than other household who is in the same living standard. And then, if the government's plan enforced, the effect might be very small. Lastly, the plan of government will discriminate against persons who support their parent. As a result, Basic old-age pension will be worsen. This paper should underline that the government's reform is only the 'hidden' retrenchment strategy in order to introduce a standard of the obligation to support own parent in the state without scientific prediction and serious discussion of negative public opinion. That is why, this is the same as the 'Trojan Horse'.

  • In this study, to verify influence that economic situations of a household unit have on donation behavior, after economic situations of a household unit were measured with income and assets by type and income to assets, effect which each variable has on secular giving was verified. This study used 3-year panel data of a total of 4,938 households based on the fifth to seventh year data as investigation data from 2012 to 2014 among data of financial panel investigation of Korea Institute of Public Finance of National Survey of Tax and Benefit. As an analysis method, a random effect tobit model was used. At the analysis result, it appeared that as scales of financial assets, earned income, property income, and transfer income become larger, the amount of donation increased. Also, it was represented that rates of income to assets had negative influence on secular giving. In case of demographic variables, education levels of householders and sizes of houses had relation of a positive direction. In case of ages, it appeared that they had inverted U-type relation. This study has meanings in that understanding of donation behavior of a household unit can be increased and expanded more and also implications related to intervention strategies of a household unit to expand sharing culture can be extracted by verifying influence which economic factors of a household unit have on donation behavior based on panel data.

  • The purpose of this study is to demonstrate, through case studies, the usefulness of utilizing local R&D centers under science and technology ODA programs. For the past few decades, advanced countries have supported ODA projects of developing countries, but there have been negative opinions regarding the results. Through a case study of the black pearl cultivation project between the Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology and Micronesia, this study explains the usefulness of actively utilizing Korean R&D centers established and operational in recipient countries. Although black pearl cultivation is not an ODA project, the case study offers valuable insights as it is operated in a similar form and thus highly applicable to future projects. Based on the case study, four implications were derived to ensure the successful operations of science and technology ODA projects in the future. First, there is a need to improve relevance by making use of the technological capacities of local R&D institutes to develop projects that reflect the needs of recipient and donor countries. Second, trust must be established with local communities over the long term in order to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of project operations. Third, the proportion of science and technology ODA projects must be expanded to acquire sustainability, and more support should be granted to ODA projects involving marine resources, which are an advantage for countries of Micronesia. Lastly, the locals should be offered employment opportunities and regular training programs to allow for the actual transfer of knowledge instead of mere techniques. The implications derived in this study will prove useful in pursuing science and technology ODA projects, especially with Micronesia.

  • Purpose: Myotonic dystrophy 1 (DM1, OMIM 160900) is an autosomal-dominant muscular disorder caused by an expansion of CTG repeats in the 3' UTR of the DMPK gene. Variable expansions of CTG repeats preclude the accurate determination of repeat size. We tried to show the clinical and analytical validity of the application of Southern blotting after long-range PCR was demonstrated in Korean DM1 patients. Materials and Methods: The Southern blotting of long-range PCR was applied to 1,231 cases with clinical suspicion of DM1, between 2000 and 2011. PCR was performed using genomic DNA with forward 5'-CAGTTCACAACCGCTCCGAGC-3' and reverse 5'-CGTGGAGGATGGAACACGGAC-3' primers. Subsequently, the PCR fragments were subjected to gel electrophoresis, capillary transfer to a nylon membrane, hybridization with a labeled (CAG)10 probe. The correlation between clinical manifestations and the CTG repeat expansions were analyzed. Results: Among a total of 1,231 tested cases, 642 individuals were diagnosed with DM1 and the range of the detected expansion was 50 to 2,500 repeats; fourteen cases with mild DM1 ($75{\pm}14$ repeats), 602 cases with classical DM1 ($314{\pm}143$ repeats), and 26 cases with congenital DM1 ($1,219{\pm}402$ repeats). The positive and negative predictive values were 100%. The age at test requested and the CTG repeat numbers were inversely correlated (R=-0.444, P<0.01). Conclusion: This study indicates that Southern blotting after long-range PCR is a reliable diagnostic method DM1.
