The purpose of the study was to explore the relationship among personality characteristics, hope and quality of life(QOL) of breast cancer patients. The subjects of the study were the 113 breast cancer patients treated at 3 university hospitals in Daegu and Busan from June 1 to Sep. 30, 2003. Personality characteristics was measured by using Personality Inventory(NEO-PI), hope measured by using Nowotny's Hope Scale, and QOL by using a questionnaire developed by Ro(1988). Data were analyzed with SPSS program by frequency, range, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients. The findings of this survey indicate 1) The mean personality characteristics item score was 2.64, hope was 2.78, and QOL was 3.19. It appeared that there was a slightly negative tendency about personality characteristics, hope and QOL of breast cancer patients. 2) There was a significant difference between personality characteristics, hope and QOL according to demographic factor. 3) There was a positive correlation between personality characteristics and hope(r=.49), hope and QOL(r=.377). Among subitem of hope and QOL especially confident, possibility of future, active participation, inner motivation and self esteem were positively correlated with personality characteristics especially extroversion, openness and conscientiousness. 4) There was a negative correlation between neuroticism and relation with neighbor(r=-.452), neuroticism and relation with family(r=-.344). It was found that personality characteristics, hope and QOL were essential concept for qualitive care of breast cancer patients and there were negative correlation with neuroticism toward relation with neighbor and relation with family. This study suggests that there would be further study to find out the importance and relationship among personality characteristics, hope and QOL of breast cancer patients.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between anger expression and self-esteem of female college students of dental hygiene. Participants were 598 female students who majored in dental hygiene from randomly selected colleges, located in Daejeon and Chungcheongbuk-do. Data were gathered from May 20 to June 5, 2014, using structured questionnaires. The major findings of the study were as follows: the correlation between anger expression and self-esteem was analyzed, and self-esteem was found to have a weak significant negative correlation with anger expression. On analyzing data to explore which variables affected self-esteem, it was found that self-esteem was influenced by grade, school record, harassment, language psychological violence, and bullying. The above-mentioned findings suggest that anger expression is related to self-esteem. After graduation from college, dental hygiene students, encounter a variety of interpersonal relationships in their work. Therefore self-esteem programs need to be developed and implemented at an individual, departmental, and collegiate level to help students learn to respect themselves and others, and to provide appropriate care.
The purpose of this study is to delve into the identity of the swag style which has diversified into various forms by exploring the phenomenon, formative characteristics and the internal values of the swag style in modern fashioin. This study discusses the concept and the socio-cultural meanings of swag from the perspective of Jean Baudrillard's hyper-reality, and a form of existence. The classifies the swag fashion styles into parody, hip hop and collage-type mix-and-match. Expressive characteristics of the swag look in modern fashion are as follows. First, the swag look utilizes the parody technique. In the mid-2000s, the look parodied brand logos as a form of self-mocking and active self-derision toward cheap imitations. Second, the swag look borrows from the expressive factors of the hip-hop style. Born as a sub-culture based on music, hip-hop has become a way of life, as its nature became multi-cultural and trans-cultural while its fashion style gained popularity globally after the 1980s. Third, the swag look barrows from the pop-type collage form as it mixes-and-matches costume items based on the expressive characteristics of hip hop, and this can be seen through items being used in new, non-formative and free styles. Comic aesthetics is revealed in parodied expression, hip-hop factors and collage-style mix-and-match. Swag as a hyper-reality manifests itself in various natures: humorous nature, negative nature and deconstructive nature through reflection and re-enactment of reality, transmutation and distortion of reality, and absence of reality respectively. However, it does not have a binding nature, which is the norm for subcultures. This characteristic, in combination with it having internal lightness, strong meaning of communication, and a sharing of self-contentment, distinguishes itself from the general meanings of existing parody fashion, hip-hop fashion and collage fashion.
The Purpose of this study was to exam the factors influence death anxiety in rural elderly. A convenience sample of 170 subjects were recruited from 12 local public helath clinic's jurisduction in J city. The data analysis was done by t-test, pearson correlation coefficient and regression analysis using SPSS/WIN 21.0. The average of age was 80.0±6.42. The average of self esteem and death anxiety were 3.3±0.58 and 2.5±0.32. Self esteem and death anxiety showed a significant negative correlation(r=-.173, p=.024). Gender(male) was the most significant predictor of death anxiety(β =.199, p=.009) and self esteem was the second predictor of death anxiety(β =-.171, p=.023). Gender(male) and self esteem explained total 5.8%(F=6.238, p=.002) of death anxiety. We demonstrated that gender(male) plays an important role in death anxiety in rural elderly. The finding of this study indicate a need to design and implement gender-specific interventions to reduce death anxiety through increasing self esteem in rural elderly.
This study examines the role of mathematics anxiety as a mediator between self efficacy and mathematics skills using a series of regression analyses suggested by Baron RM & Kenny DA(1986). The participants include college students who enrolled in the Food Service Production and Operation course in a department of hotel and restaurant management at a college in the United States. Descriptive analysis, principal component analysis, reliability test, and a series of regression analyses were used for data analysis using SPSS 19.0. In order to collect data for the study, General Self Efficacy Scale(GSES) and Math Anxiety Rating Scale(MARS) were utilized, and they turned out to be reliable(${\alpha}$=.906 and ${\alpha}$=.890, respectively). A significant negative relationship was found between self efficacy and mathematics anxiety. In addition, it was found that self-efficacious students performed better mathematics skills than those who had lower level of self efficacy. However, the relationship was no longer significant when the concept of mathematics anxiety was added, which satisfies the condition of mediation.
This study was performed to clarify 'jajonshim' which is different from self-esteem in its social representation and concept in Korean society. In order to refine the notion of 'jajonshim', we first referred to literature and short essay on jajonshim and analyzed its cultural meaning and social representation in Korea. As a result, jajonshim was considered necessary condition for human beings in Korean culture. Although jajonshim was not well recognized normally, it became critical when it was threatened by others and considered to be what one must save as well. Furthermore, the ground theory designed by Strauss and Corbin was utilized in order to analyze Korean interviewees' experience of jajonshim. Koreans believed that their jajonshim was injured when others disrespected their values, which consequently produced negative emotions. When their jajonshim was damaged, people also used 3 coping strategies to recover it. Based on the results, jajonshim was distinguished from self-esteem. First, jajonshim is a type of self-awareness people experience when they are disrespected; thus, it is different from self-esteem which is maintained stable regardless of any events or situations. Second, unlike self-esteem which is solely evaluated by oneself, jajonshim is evaluated by other people's point of view. This study shows that jajonshim exists in the context of Korean culture and has significance in clarifying the cognitive structure and experience process of jajonshim.
This research investigates gifted students' mothers' rearing stress based on the concept mapping method. For this, 12 gifted students' mothers solicited, gathered and analyzed related statements, and then did multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis. The stress value was .273 which was appropriate for the two level concept mapping study. In addition 101 mothers of gifted students rated for the rearing stresses they experience. Results were as follows. First, 79 concrete statements were solicited and as a result of concept mapping were categorized as 'burden and conflict as mothers of the gifted', 'possible negative characteristics due to the giftedness', and 'self-esteem and pressure by the title of the gifted'. Especially following items showed relatively high average: worrying about how to give the child a specific help for his/her career(M=4.65); worrying that she might be intervening too much in their child's behaviors(M=4.60); getting pressured supporting the child to get involved in the gifted education system continually(M=4.46); worrying if her child is not developing his/her talent enough due to the lack of time and money(M=4.44); being concerned that her high expectations might be putting her child under too much pressure (M=4.43). Implications of the study related to gifted education practices were discussed.

This study attempts to analyze the causes of low affective achievement of elementary, middle, and high school students in Korea in science. To this end, a total of 27 students, three to four students per grade, were interviewed by grade from the fourth grade of elementary school to the first grade of high school, and a total of nine teachers were interviewed by school level. In the interview, related questions were asked in five sub-areas of the 'Indicators of Positive Experiences about Science': 'Science Academic Emotion', 'Science-Related Self-Concept', 'Science Learning Motivation', 'Science-Related Career Aspiration', and 'Science-Related Attitude'. Interview contents were recorded, transcribed, and categorized. As a result of examining the causes of low science academic emotion, it was found that students experienced negative emotions when experiments are not carried out properly, scientific theories and terms are difficult, and recording the inquiry results is burdensome. In addition, students responded that science-related self-concept changed negatively due to poor science grades, difficult scientific terms, and a large amount of learning. The reasons for the decline in science learning motivation were the lack of awareness of relationship between science class content and daily life, difficulty in science class content, poor science grades, and lack of relevance to one's interest or career path. The main reason for the decline in science-related career aspirations was that they feel their career path was not related to science, and due to poor science performance. Science-related attitudes changed negatively due to difficulties in science classes or negative feelings about science classes, and high school students recognized the ambivalence of science on society. Based on the results of the interview, support for experiments and basic science education, improvement of elementary school supplementary textbook 'experiment & observation', development of teaching and learning materials, and provision of science-related career information were proposed.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the degree of restraint (DOR) of longitudinal steel at continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) against environmental loadings. METHODS : To measure the longitudinal steel strain, 3-electrical resistance and self-temperature compensation gauges were installed to CRCP test section (thickness = 250mm, steel ratio = 0.7%) and continuously measured 10 min. intervals during 259 days. In order to properly analyze the steel strains first, temperature compensation process has been conducted. Secondly, measured steel strains were divided into 12 phases with different events such as before paving, during concrete hardening, and after first cracking, etc. RESULTS : Thermal strain rate (TSR) concept is defined as the linear strain variations with temperature changes and restraints rate of longitudinal steel against environmental loadings (especially thermal loading) with different cases is defined as degree of restraint(DOR). New concept of DOR could be indirect indicator of crack width behaviors of CRCP. CONCLUSIONS : Before paving, DOR of longitudinal steel is almost same at the coefficient of thermal expansion of steel ($12.44m/m/^{\circ}C$) because of no restraint boundary condition. After concrete pouring, DOR is gradually changed into -1 due to concrete stiffness developing with hydration. After first cracking at crack induced area, values of DOR are around -3~-5. The negative DOR stands for the crack width behavior instead of steel strain behavior. During winter season, DOR reached to -5.77 as the highest, but spring this values gradually reduced as -1.7 as the lowest. Based on this observation, we can presume crack width decreased over time within the time frame of this study. This finding is not consistent with the current theory on crack width variations over time, so further study is necessary to identify the causes of crack width reducing. One of the reasons could be related to concrete stress re-distribution and stress relaxation.
This study examined coping strategies and perceived changes of the Chinese international students in South Korea. A total of 56 Chinese students participated and data was analyzed using the concept mapping method. The results showed that Chinese international students adopted developing language proficiency and using social networks as important coping strategies. They also perceived a wide range of changes including changes in the cultural and personal self. However, the perception of these coping strategies and changes differed by the length of stay. Chinese international students who stayed longer reported using specific coping strategies for mood regulation, which was distinctive from the coping strategies used by students who stayed for a shorter period of time. Students who stayed longer perceived negative changes as well as positive changes, while students who stayed for a shorter period reported predominantly positive changes. The findings indicate that university staff needs to understand and sensitively respond to the distinctive experiences of Chinese international students which vary across time.
