  • Polymer insulating materials such as cross linked polyethylene (XLPE) are employed in electric cables used for extra high voltage. These materials can degrade due to chemical, mechanical and electric stress, possibly caused by voids, the presence of extrinsic materials and protrusions. Therefore, this study measured discharge patterns, discharge phase angle, quantity and occurrence frequency as well as changes in XLPE under different temperatures and applied voltages. To quantitatively analyze the irregular partial discharge patterns measured, the discharge patterns were examined using a statistical program. A three layer sample was fabricated, wherein the upper and lower layers were composed of non-void XLPE, while the middle layer was composed of an air void and copper particles. After heating to room temperature and $50^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C$ in silicone oil, partial discharge characteristics were studied by increasing the voltage from the inception voltage to the breakdown voltage. Partial discharge statistical analysis showed that when the K-means clustering was carried out at 9 kV to determine the void discharge characteristics, the amount discharged at low temperatures was small but when the temperature was increased to $80^{\circ}C$, the discharge amount increased to be 5.7 times more than that at room temperature because electric charge injection became easier. An analysis of the kurtosis and the skewness confirmed that positive and negative polarity had counterclockwise and clockwise clustering distribution, respectively. When 5 kV was applied to copper particles, the K-means was conducted as the temperature changed from $50^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$. The amount of charge at a positive polarity increased 20.3% and the amount of charge at a negative polarity increased 54.9%. The clustering distribution of a positive polarity and negative polarity showed a straight line in the kurtosis and skewness analyses.

  • The Journal of English Language and Literature. The purpose of this study is to provide an optimality theoretic approach to NPIs (Negative Polarity Items) in English and Korean by proposing three universal constraints. The constraints are C-command Condition (CCC): NPI must be c-commanded by a constituent with negative meaning; Locality Condition (LOC): NPI must be bound in the local domain; Subjacency: NPI licensing must satisfy Subjacency Condition (SBJ); Previous analyses have shown that these three constraints control NPIs in one way or another. This study attempts to demonstrate that NPIs in both English and Korean languages can be nicely accounted for by setting a different constraint hierarchy for the two independent languages. That is, by slightly changing the constraint hierarchy, distributional differences of NPIs in both languages can be accounted straightforwardly within the framework of Optimality Theory.

  • In this study, which was performed to identify a degradation mechanism in macromolecular insulating material, the contact angle, surface potential decay, surface resistance rate and XPS analysis were compared after exposure of fibre-glass-reinforced polymer laminate to plasma discharge. In the case of chemical changes arising from plasma treatment, carboxyl radicals were generated mainly in the plasma-treated surface, which was rapidly changed to a hydrophilic surface. In the corona potential decay study to determine the electrical changes, leading to a negative surface for the untreated specimen. However, in the case of the hydrophilic surface, a lot of carboxy radicals(-COO) acting as positive polarity were generated, resulting in a positive surface. Owing to such a positive surface, the charges of applied negative polarity were decreased rapidly.

  • This research was conducted to see the impact of brightness, polarity, and hue diference on legibility and emotional effcts of the word. In the experiment 1, stimuli with three levels of brightness difference and two-typed polarity were used. The results showed that legibility, aesthetics, and preference increased with increasing brightness difference. In the experiment 2, the same stimuli if experiment 1 included four hues: red, green, blue, yellow. As a result, the effects of brightness and polarity and the interaction effect of brightness and polarity on legibility were significant. Also, the effects of brightness, polarity, and hue and the interaction effect of brightness and hue on aesthetics and preference were significant. These results showed that legibility, aesthetics, and preference increased with increasing brightness difference of word and background and positive polarity was better than negative. Aesthetics and preference rating increased according to the following order: red, blue, green, yellow. In addition, the interaction effect of brightness and polarity on legibility was because reaction time of negative polarity was longer than positive at the small brightness difference condition. The interaction effect of brightness and hue on aesthetics and preference ws because the aesthetics rating of hue at the large brightness difference condition had significant difference compared with small brightness difference. In the experiment 3, participants rated text designs and simple color stimuli with 18 emotional adjectives to see the similarity of their emotion. The conclusion was that to reflect the subjective feelings of a rotor on the text design, it would be appropriate to use the rotor on background of the text design.

  • In recent times, gas insulated medium voltage (MV) circuit breakers (CB) form a vital component in power system network, considering its advantages such as reduced size and safety margins. Gas insulation characteristics of circuit breakers are generally measured by lightning impulse (LI) test according to IEC standard 60060-1 as a factory routine test. Considering the environmental issues of $SF_6$ gas, many research works are being carried out towards the mixture of $SF_6$ gases for high voltage insulation applications. However, few reports are only available regarding the LI withstand and streamer propagation characteristics (at both positive and negative polarity of waveform) of $SF_6/N_2$ gas mixture insulated medium voltage circuit breakers. In this paper, positive and negative polarity LI tests are carried out on 22 kV medium voltage circuit breaker filled with $SF_6/N_2$ gas mixture at different gas pressures (1-5 bar) and at different gas mixture ratios. Important LI parameters such as breakdown voltage, streamer velocity, time to breakdown and acceleration voltage are evaluated with IEC standard LI ($1.2/50{\mu}s$) waveform. Weibull distribution analysis of LI breakdown voltage data is carried out and 50% probability breakdown voltage, scale parameter and shape parameter are evaluated. Results illustrate that the $25%SF_6+75%N_2$ gas filled insulation considerably enhances the LI withstand and breakdown strength of MV circuit breakers. LI breakdown voltage of circuit breaker under negative polarity shows higher value when compared with positive polarity. Results show that maintaining the gas pressure at 0.3 MPa (3 bar) with 10% $SF_6$ gas mixed with 90% $N_2$ will give optimum lighting impulse withstand performance of 22 kV MV circuit breaker.

  • In this study performed to identify a degradation mechanism in macromolecular insulating material, the contact angel, surface potential decay, surface resistivity, and XPS analysis were compared after exposure of FRP laminate to plasma discharge. In the case of contact angle, the surface of specimen untreated showed weak hydrophobic property of 73。. However, the contact angle was decreased to 20。in the plasma-treated specimen. In the case of chemical changes arising form plasma treatment, carboxl radicals were generated mainly in the surface treated, which was rapidly changed to the hydrophilic one. In the corona potential decay study to determine the electrical changes of the surface, positive charges were rapidly decreased when compared with negative charges, leading to negative property in the surface of specimen not treated. However, in the case of the hydrophilic surface, lots of carboxl radicals acting as positive polarity were generated, resulting in positive surface. Owing to such positive surface, charges of negative polarity applied were rapidly decreased.

  • A corona motor, as one of a powerful cooling means of microelectronic devices, has been employed because of its very simple structure of no coils and no brushes. In this paper, the effect of polarity of applied voltage and the number of blade corona electrodes on the fundamental properties of rotation of the motor was investigated. The I-V and rotation characteristics of the blade corona electrode were significantly different from the different polarities of applied voltages and the blade corona electrode numbers, due to the different space charge effect resulted by the different migration mobility of the positive and negative ions generated near the blade corona electrode tip of the rotor of the motor. The rotation speed of the motor was influenced significantly by the polarity of corona discharge, the number of blades, and mass of rotor. At the same corona current, an effective rotation can be obtained with the positive corona caused by the lower ion mobility. On the other hand, the higher rotation speed can be obtained with the negative corona resulted from its higher corona current. The highest rotation speed and energy efficiency can be obtained with the rotor having 4 blades.

  • Solvatochromic effect and hydrogen bonding interaction of NPNOH, NPNO- and NPNOR were investigated. Electronic transition energies of the dyes were plotted against empirical solvent polarity parameters, Taft's π* and Reichardt's ET(30). Good correlations were observed when the excitation energies were plotted against the energy calculated by multiple linear regression method which was developed by Taft. There is an intrinsic difference between betaine for ET(30) polarity scale and the azoderivative, which is derived from the specific hydrogen bond incurred with probe molecules and solvents. The hydrogen bonding plays a very important role for stabilization of an excited state molecule by solvents especially when a solute possesses a negative charge as with NPNO-.
