The purposes of this study were to identify 1) the effect of physical growth on body criticism from others and body image,2) the effect of body criticism from others on sociocultural attitude toward appearance, body image, and self-esteem, 3)the effect of sociocultural attitude toward appearance on body image, 4)the effect of body image on self=esteem and clothing attitude, and 5) the effect of self-esteem on clothing altitude on Korean female teenagers. The data were collected from 436 high school girls living in Seoul, Korea, via self-administered questionnaires, and were analyzed by factor analysis and LISREL models. The result of this study were as follows: 1) Among three measurement variables of physical growth, the height had a negative effect on body criticism from others. Sexual maturation positively influenced the affective aspect of body image. 2) Body criticism from others had a positive effect on the sociocultural attitude toward appearance and a negative effect on the affective aspect of body image. 3) The sociocultural altitude toward appearance had a negative effect on the affective aspect of body image and a positive effect on the cognitive/behavioral aspect of body image.4) The affective aspect of body image had a positive effect on the cognitive/behavioral aspect of body image, self-esteem, and clothing attitude. However, the cognitive/behavioral aspect of body image had a positive effect on clothing attitude.5) Self-esteem had no significant effect on clothing attitude.
Objective: The purpose of the present study was to examine the changes in the body perception of young children using a short-term longitudinal design, then to investigate the factors related to their body perception. Methods: Participants were 65 preschool children and their mothers that were recruited from five institutions. An 11-month, two-time point longitudinal design was used in which children were interviewed individually to examine the changes in body perception. At the second time point, children were assessed with an additional measure to investigate self-esteem, and their mothers also reported on maternal factors and children's media experience through a questionnaire. Data were analyzed by paired t-test, independent t-test, correlations and ANOVA. Results: The results showed a significant decline of children's negative body perception over time. Children's media experience was positively correlated with negative body perception. Mothers whose children showed higher body mass index (BMI) sent more verbal messages about their child's weight reduction. In addition, children's negative body perception was positively correlated with physical self-esteem. Finally, there was a significant difference in only the physical self-esteem according to the level of children's body perception. Conclusion/Implications: The findings would suggest theoretical and practical implications to support intervention and education programs to improve the body image of young children.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation of desire for aesthetic surgery and clothing attitude of female with their body satisfaction, need, and self-esteem. Subjects were 813 females of 10's to 40's living in Daejeon Metropolitan City and Gongju City, Chungchungnamdo. Results from this research revealed that the correlation of desire for aesthetic surgery with body satisfaction was negative so that female satisfying one's body shape didn't want to have aesthetic surgery. However, aesthetics and sexual attractiveness of clothing had positive correlations with body satisfaction. It was also shown that the need and self-esteem of female affected directly on the desire for aesthetic surgery and the pursuit of clothing aesthetics. Women with higher need for exhibition and dominance were not only concerned about the elevation of their appearance through their clothing but also recognized the value of modifying their appearance through aesthetic surgery. Women with higher self-esteem were interested in the elevation of their appearance through clothing, but the other hand, they showed negative attitude toward modifying their appearance via aesthetic surgery. This result revealed the fact that women with higher self-esteem had a tendency to keep the traditional sense of value and as a result, showed negative attitude toward the aesthetic surgery.
The objective of this study was to investigate differences in clothing behavior and individual characteristics of female college students by their body cathexis and clothing attitude. The college students selected by random sampling were classified into four groups by their body cathexis and clothing attitude: positive congruity(positive body cathexis and clothing attitude, G1), positive incongruity(negative body cathexis and positive clothing attitude, G2), negative congruity(negative body cathexis and clothing attitude, G3), negative incongruity(positive body cathexis and negative clothing attitude, G4). The results were as follows: G1 was high in both public and personal self-esteem and self-image, extroverted, refined and impulsive. G2 were fashion opinion leaders, highly uneasy about society, highly impulsive, modem, peculiar, creative and introspective. G3 was highly uneasy about society, low in self-esteem, and less impulsive. G4 was low in both public self-esteem and fashion innovation, and avoided impulsive buying.
In this study, it is explored whether teasing from parents and siblings about appearance of children affects body satisfaction and self-esteem of middle school students. A total of 594 adolescents participated in the survey and the causal model was tested with the data. In results, parents' and siblings' teasing was significantly correlated. Parents' and siblings' teasing significantly affected body satisfaction that showed a significant impact on self-esteem. In the mean comparison by gender, female adolescents suffered more from parents' as well as siblings' teasing on appearance than did male adolescents. Female adolescents indicated lower body satisfaction than male adolescents whereas no gender difference was found in self-esteem. In the multiple-model comparison, both the parents' and siblings' teasing about appearance affected body satisfaction of female adolescents while only siblings' teasing affected body satisfaction of male adolescents. The results indicate that female adolescents are more likely to be exposed to parents' and siblings' teasing about appearance at home than male adolescents, resulting in negative body satisfaction that is influencing self-esteem. The finding could be used as a basis for family education, calling for an attention to this issue.

Objectives: This study was conducted to examine the relations of 'self-body evaluation', self-esteem, and health behavior among junior high school girls, analysing influencing factors for their health behavior, and building a base for its improvement. Methods: Data collection was conducted by self-report survey. Survey participants were 330 junior high school girl students in the area of Seoul, 221 from women's junior high schools and 109, coed schools. Survey included general characteristics, self-body evaluation, self-esteem, and health behavior. Results: 1. In their self-body evaluation, the students gave themselves $3.27{\pm}.53$ scores of the total 5, and of general characteristics, BMI, ideal BMI, personality, living standard were statistically significant different. 2. The scores for the girl students' health behavior were $2.77{\pm}0.37$ of total 4, and of general characteristics, school forms, grades, living standard were statistically significant different. characteristics, school forms, personality, school grades, living standard were statistically significant different. 3. The girls' self-body evaluation and self-esteem showed a low level of negative significant difference and their self-body evaluation and health behavior were significantly different, but a low level of negative significant difference. And the relationship between self-esteem and health behavior showed a high level of positive significant difference. 4. Influencing factors for the girls' health behavior showed a significant difference in self-esteem and school forms of general characteristics, self-body evaluation, and self-esteem.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among variables of body image, self-esteem and depression in college female students according to the normal and overweight. Method: The subjects of this study consisted of 245 college female students. The data was collected through personal interviews using questionnaires from May to June of 2001. The data was analyzed by the SPSS computer program, and it included descriptive statistics, x$^2$-test, t-test and the pearson correlation coefficient. Result: Demographics provided a significant difference in grade, household income, weight control experience. There was a perceived health status difference, according to the normal and overweight subjects. There was a significant difference in body image, self-esteem and depression between the two groups. There was a significant positive correlation between body image and self-esteem, and negative correlation between body image and depression, and self-esteem and depression in college female students. Conclusion: The Findings of this study give useful information to construct further studies in intervention program relating overweight control for college female students.
It can be said that the ultimate goal of advertising is creating consumers' buying intention and buying behavior toward advertised goods. But literature suggests that ads have both intended and unintended consequences, and one of the unintended consequences is that the idealized images of physical attractiveness found in advertising have negative impact on girls' and womens' self-perceptions. Thus, this study, using social comparison theory as a framework, was designed to investigate the influences of the images of models in ads portrayed in TV and fashion magazines on the purchasing intention, self-esteem and body satisfaction of college women. Using an experimental stimulus, a moving picture representing thin and attractive models in the context of advertising fashion goods, two conditions were manipulated and the subjects were placed into one of two groups randomly, the experiment group and the control group. The experiment group only was exposed to the ads portraying highly attractive models. Data were collected from two groups using same questionnaire. The data were analyzed using t-test, two-way ANOVA, and descriptive statistics. The findings were as follows: 1. The thin and attractive image of models in ads on buying intention had significant positive influence on buying intention(p<.05). 2. The thin and attractive image of models in ads had significant negative influences on self-esteem(p<.05). 3. The thin and attractive image of models in ads had significant negative influence on body satisfaction(p<.05). 4. The ideal body internalization had significant negative influences on body satisfaction(p<.05), but interaction effect of model's image and ideal body internalization on body satisfaction was not significant.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify body esteem, body figure discrepancy and depression in women college students. Method: The data were collected during April and May, 2004 using a questionnaire. The participants were 364 women college students attending universities in Seoul and Gangwon-Do. Results: The BMI for under weight, normal weight and overweight for the college women were 49.2%, 48.3%, 2.5% respectively. But 52.6% of the students perceived themselves as obese and only 11.5% described themselves as being 'thin'. The mean scores for BMI, body esteem, body figure discrepancy and depression were $20.11{\pm}2.20$, $2.36{\pm}.79$, $1.07{\pm}.58$ and $1.20{\pm}.48$ respectively. Significant difference was found in body esteem score (F=26.389 p<.0001) and body figure discrepancy (F=64.167, p<.0001) according to BMI scores. There were negative correlations between body esteem and body figure discrepancy (r=-.582, p=.0001), between body esteem and depression (r=-.120, p=.028), between body esteem and BMI (r=-.422, p=.0001), and a positive correlation between body figure discrepancy and BMI (r=.630, p=.0001). Factors such as body figure discrepancy, BMI and depression explained 36.7% of the valiance in students' body esteem. Conclusion: This study suggests that an intervention program is necessary for women college students to increase their body esteem.
This study investigated the effects of body consciousness and body esteem on interpersonal competence. A structured questionnaire was distributed to 220 dental hygiene students during July 1-31, 2020. The findings show that the subjects scored means of 3.32±0.26, 3.33±0.53, and 3.49±0.45 out of 5 in body consciousness, body esteem, and interpersonal competence, respectively. There were negative correlations between body surveillance and body shame (r=-0.303, p<0.001), as well as between two subfactors of body consciousness. Body shame was positively correlated with subfactors of interpersonal competence such as relationship initiation (r=0.217, p<0.01), claim for displeasure (r=0.218, p<0.01), and conflict management (r=0.231, p<0.01). Under the category of body esteem, body function esteem had positive correlations with conflict management (r=0.293, p<0.01) and consideration for others (r=0.141, p<0.05). Body consciousness and body esteem had effects on interpersonal competence, with an explanatory power of 13.4%. Higher body consciousness (β=.16, p=0.016) and body esteem (β=.22, p=0.02) were associated with greater interpersonal competence. These findings demonstrate that college students' objectified body consciousness and body esteem have an impact on their interpersonal competence. This raises the need to develop and apply a program to help students have positive perceptions of their bodies and establish their own individuality and body images to enhance their interpersonal competence.
