  • It has been suggested that character education, taught only in ethics and social science, should be integrated into other subjects including science education. In terms of inquiry and the nature of science, science education is related to character education, which is emphasized by SSI (Socioscientific Issue) education. Followed by necessity of character education, the Character Education Promotion Act was established in 2015. To investigate what and how character education is conducting in schools, analysis of curriculums and textbooks is needed in terms of elements underlined in the Character Education Promotion Act. For this purpose, this research analyzed general remarks and science sections in the 2009 revised and the 2015 revised curriculums and science textbooks based on the 2009 revised curriculum with regard to essential virtues in the Character Education Promotion Act. Results showed that parts of essential virtues were included in both curriculums, of which elements were inconsistent with those of science textbooks. Curriculums and textbooks reflecting whole elements faithfully need to be developed.

  • Science teachers in elementary schools and secondary schools recognize the necessity of character education, feeling difficulties such as evaluation methods, mood of competition, extra work and lack of time according to previous research, which were based on answers from science teachers not experiencing character education. As a rare study of teacher experiencing, previous researches didn't fully address the problems and suggestions about adopting character education in science classrooms. This study is about teacher practice of character education on site with the CoProC (Collaborative Problem-Solving for Character Competence) program in science classes with which other previous studies shed new light. Five teachers, adapting the CoProC program in their science classes, participated in two interviews, sharing their student achievement in character education. Results showed that student achievement was high when their teacher had experienced the training program, development, and classes of CoProC rather than their normal teaching career. Teacher recognition on the aims of CoProC influenced difficulties, evaluation, and feedback.

  • The purpose of this study was to obtain the basic data for developing more advanced courses on character education by surveying and analyzing the perception and demands of character education of university students and further, to provide useful information for creating institutional protocol on character education. The study was conducted from April 2018 to May 2018 on students attending the departments of non-health science and health science university students. A total of 206 students participated in this study, and all the students in the non-health science and health science departments were found to be highly aware of the need for character education, its importance and the possibility of personality development through learning. Students from all the departments showed high levels on average in terms of self-understanding according to their personality abilities, and especially their high levels of 'consideration' and 'responsibility'. For the differences in perception of self-efficacy, the lowest level of recognition was for 'will' and the average values were not high. In their response to personality level, all students answered that their personality was 'high' (42.1%), and that the personality education courses at the schools they are currently attending were 'not satisfied' with both the non-health science and health science students. As a result, there were higher results overall for the health science students than that for the non-health science students, but there were not many significant differences. To this end, education institutes will have to prepare conditions for university students to cultivate their expertise in character, while at the same time helping them grow into human beings with the qualities demanded by society. In addition, the government should establish curriculums and content by accurately identifying the needs of character education and devising concrete measures for their implementation, and by more faithfully considering quantitative and qualitative context types for the content base of character education.

  • A major purpose of this article is to provide ethical aspects in public health. This is not intended to establish theoretical and philosopical argument for issues of health care ethics, but intended to describe the necessity of ethics education in public health. The increase in medical science to sustain life and the failure to provide corresponding ethical guideline in public health have created new ethical problems. All members in public health trainning programs should not only have an interest in health care ethics, but also have an ability to reach decisions in ethical problems related to community. The goal of ethics education in public health is not to improve the moral character of health care providers but rather to provide them with the conceptual abilities and decision-making skills they will need to deal successfully with ethical issues in public health research and practice. Obviously. the ultimate goal is to increase awareness of human values in health care.
