  • Aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) films were deposited on SiOC/Si wafer by an RF-magnetron sputtering system, by varying the deposition parameters of radio frequency power from 50 to 200 W. To assess the correlation of the optical properties between the substrate and AZO thin film, photoluminescence was measured, and the origin of deep level emission of AZO thin films grown on SiOC/Si wafer was studied. AZO formed on SiOC/Si substrates exhibited ultraviolet emission due to exciton recombination, and the visible emission was associated with intrinsic and extrinsic defects. For the AZO thin film deposited on SiOC at low RF-power, the deep level emission near the UV region is attributed to an increase of the variations of defects related to the AZO and SiOC layers. The applied RF-power influenced an energy gap of localized trap state produced from the defects, and the gap increased at low RF power due to the formation of new defects across the AZO layer caused by lattice mismatch of the AZO and SiOC films. The optical properties of AZO films on amorphous SiOC compared with those of AZO film on Si were considerably improved by reducing the roughness of the surface with low surface ionization energy, and by solving the problem of structural mismatch with the AZO film and Si wafer.

  • Exposure of isolated intact mitochondria to near UV to visible light resulted in not only loss of respiration, the most well-documented phenomenon regarding phototoxic effects in the respiring organelles, but also lipid peroxidation of membranes and mitochondrial swelling; these turned out to be O$_2$-dependent and thus prevented by anaerobiosis, enhanced by a partial deuteration of the suspension medium, and suppressed by the presence of a singlet oxygen ($^1O_2$) scavenger. Measurements of the spectral dependence of such detrimental effects of light on mitochondrial structure and function revealed that all the resulting spectra bear a significant resemblance to the action spectrum for photogeneration of $^1O_2$ from mitochondrial membranes, which in turn carries the spectral characteristics of light absorption by mitochondrial Fe-S centers. Futhermore, destructing the Fe-S centers by a mercurial treatment of mitochondria brought about a striking reduction of the light-induced membrane peroxidation and swelling of mitochondria. These results are consistent with the suggestion that the impairment of functional, structural integrity of mitochondria caused by strong irradiation is directly related to the production of $^1O_2$ in mitochondria, photosensitized by the Fe-S centers. This paper also presents kinetic data which indicate that, among various membrane-bound protein systems associated with mitochondrial energy metabolism, the respiratory chain is the primary target for photodamage.

  • Carbon monoxide (CO) is not only an important intermediate species in chemical reaction mechanisms of hydrocarbon fuel combustion, but also a crucial pollutant species emitted from automotive engines. To better understand the physical processes impacting CO emissions, the development of laser-based measurement techniques that can visualize in-cylinder CO distributions is desirable. Among these techniques, Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) is a sensitive and species-selective detection technique capable of good spatial resolution. However, some technical matters such as deep UV excitation, severe pressure dependency of the LIF signal, and potential interference from other species have been major challenges for CO LIF application. This study is focused on investigating the feasibility of CO two-photon LIF in a direct-injection diesel engine operating at typical pressure and temperature conditions with commercial grade diesel fuel. Spectroscopic analysis shows that the CO fluorescence signal can be separated from $C_2$ Swan band or broadband fluorescence from PAHs when the signal is collected near 483 nm. The signal-to-noise ratio of CO LIF deteriorate rapidly as pressure is increased, following $P^{-1.49}$ which matches the theoretical signal pressure dependency.

  • Among many the oxynitrides, TiNO and AlCrNO, have diverse applications in different technological fields. We prepared TiNO/AlCrNO/Al thin films on aluminum substrates using the method of dc reactive magnetron sputtering. The reactive gas flow, gas mixture, and target potential were applied as the sputtering conditions during the deposition in order to control the chemical composition. The multi-layer films have been prepared in an Ar and O2+N2 gas mixture rate. The surface properties were estimated by performing scanning electron microscopy (SEM). At a wavelength range of 0.3~2.5 μm, the exact composition and optical properties of thin films were measured by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and Ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) spectrophotometry. The optimal absorptance of multi-layer films was exhibited above 95.5% in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum, and the reflectance was achieved below 1.89%.

  • Solution-cast films of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and polyurethane (PU) containing polymeric styryl dye up to 5 % by weight were prepared to investigate their acid-sensitivity and mechanical and thermal properties. Original red samples due to styryl dye turned out yellow very rapidly as they were exposed to acid vapor of hydrochloric acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid. According to UV/VIS spectroscopic measurements, characteristic peak intensities near 430 nm and 520 nm increased or decreased relatively with exposed amounts of acid, respectively. Both PMMA and PU samples showed uniform color distribution due to a good miscibility between polymer and dye which can be evidenced by measurements of glass transition temperature. No significant difference in acid-sensitivity was found between PU and PMMA except relative absorbance. However, dependence of their mechanical properties on dye content was somewhat different with PU or PMMA. In case of PMMA, modulus and breaking stress increased up to about 50 % with increasing dye content, whereas those of PU samples showed only slight increase. It was ascribed to whether the matrix polymer was in the glassy or rubbery state.

  • A borate compound was adopted as new host material for $EU^{3+}$ activator. The $Eu^{3+}-doped\;YCa_3(GaO)_3(BO_3)_4$ (YCGB) phosphors were successfully synthesized. Also, their photoluminescence properties under the excitation of UV ray were measured. In the XRD patterns of the synthesized powders, most peaks were well-matched to a gaudefroyite phase. The emission of $Eu^{3+}$ in YCGB consists of a strong peak centered at 622 nm, which is attributed to $^5D_O-^7F_2$ transition of $Eu^{3+}$ and several weak peaks at near the wavelength. Optimum $Eu^{3+}$ concentration of the red phosphor under the excitation with the wavelength of 395 nm was about 75 mol%. This indicates that the red phosphor has a relatively higher critical concentration than that of the other $Eu^{3+}-doped$ phosphors. The dominant interaction character of $Eu^{3+}$ might be dipole-dipole interaction.

  • It is observed from SEM images that many voids were created after annealed by helium gas. The PL spectra of the ZnO samples revealed the strong violet emission peaks at 3.05 eV with the relative weak near band edge UV emissions. It was concluded from experiment results that native $Zn_i$ and $V_o$ donor defect levels can be generated below the conduction band edge due to the incorporation of helium atoms decomposed from helium gas into the ZnO matrix. He atoms in ZnO matrix will affect the interface trap existing in depletion regions located at the grain boundaries, which leads to the creation of $Zn_i$ and $V_o$ donor defect levels.

  • ZnO nanorods array have been grown on the seed crystal coated Si(100) substrate by hydrothermal method. The growth, structural and optical properties of ZnO nanorods array were investigated with a variation of precursor concentration from 0.01 M to 0.04 M. The array density of grown ZnO nanorods per same area was increased with increasing the concentration of precursor solution. Vertically aligned ZnO nanorods with hexagonal wurtzite structure have highly preferred c-axis orientation along (002) lattice plane. Especially, ZnO nanorods array developed from 0.04 M precursor solution showed a diameter of about 85 nm and length of 1.2 {\mu}m$ without any crystallographic defects. The photoluminescence spectra of ZnO nanorods from heavier precursor concentration exhibited stronger UV emission around 380 nm corresponding with near-band-edge emission.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) are ubiquitous contaminants in coastal marine environment. PAHs enter estuarine and nearshore marine environment via several routes such as combustion of fossil fuels, domestic and industrial effluents and oil spills. In August of 1997, mussels(Mytilus edulis) were collected at 6 sites near Kori nuclear power plant in order to analyze the PAH content by HPLC with uv/vis detection. Unfortunately, I could not find any living oysters in which I firstly intended to measure the PAH content in the study area. NPTHL and ANCPL were the major dominant PAH compounds in mussels living in the intertidal zone of Kori, Korea, and DahA, BbF, BaP were the next dominant PAH group in mussels in the study area. The mean concentrations of 15 PAH in mussels ranged from 3.2 to 1,680 ppb(mean 105$\pm$60.5 ppb). Compared with other studies world over, the concentrations of carcinogenic PAHs were relatively low in mussels in the study area, even though total PAH content was rather high. According to N/P(Naphthalene/Phenanthrene) ratio(147) and the ratio of 2∼3 ring to 3∼5 ring PAHs(58∼90 %) in mussels in the study area, I expect that the major source of PAHs in this study area is rather fresh petroleum-derived. This study presents preliminary data for the PAH levels in mussels from the intertidal zone of Kori, and the data will hopefully be utilized for the assessment of oil pollution in the East Sea, Korea.

  • Our previous studies indicated that native carbonic anhydrase does not interact with hydrophobic adsorbents and that it acquires this ability upon denaturation. In the present study, an apo form of the enzyme was prepared by removal of zinc and a comparative study was performed on some characteristic features of the apo and native forms by far- and near-UV circular dichroism (CD), intrinsic fluorescent spectroscopy, 1-anilino naphthalene-8-sulfonate (ANS) binding, fluorescence quenching by acrylamide, and Tm measurement. Results indicate that protein flexibility is enhanced and the hydrophobic sites become more exposed upon conversion to the apo form. Accordingly, the apo structure showed a greater affinity for interaction with hydrophobic adsorbents as compared with the native structure. As observed for the native enzyme, heat denaturation of the apo form promoted interaction with alkyl residues present on the adsorbents and, by cooling followed by addition of zinc, catalytically-active immobilized preparations were obtained.
