Tilt rotor aircraft was developed for satisfying VSTOL (vertical short take off and landing) capability and cruise performance. However the noise generated by tilt rotor system causes one of the most serious problems. In this paper, noise characteristics of tilt rotor system in hovering flight are predicted by using free wake method and Lowson's formula. The flow field of the tilt rotor is simulated by using time marching free wake method, and the free field acoustic pressure is calculated through Lowson's formula. The predicted results are compared with experimental data at various observing positions. In the near field, they show good agreement with experimental data regardless of rotating speed and collective pitch angles of 6, 8 and 10 degree, although there are some discrepancies between prediction and experiment in the far field and at the rotating axis in the near field. It seems that the reason of these discrepancies is difference of unsteady force fluctuation between experiment and calculation.
Cable-stayed bridges are attractive due to their beauty, reducing material consumption, less harm to the environment and so on, in comparison with other kinds of bridges. As a massive structure with long period and low damping (0.3 to 2%) under many dynamic loads, these bridges are susceptible to fatigue, serviceability disorder, damage or even collapse. Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) is a suitable controlling system to reduce the vibrations and prevent the threats in such bridges. In this paper, Multi Tuned Mass Damper (MTMD) system is added to the Ahvaz cable stayed Bridge in Iran, to reduce its seismic vibrations. First, the bridge is modeled in SAP2000 followed with result verification. Dead and live loads and the moving loads have been assigned to the bridge. Then the finite element model is developed in OpenSees, with the goal of running a nonlinear time-history analysis. Three far-field and three near-field earthquake records are imposed to the model after scaling to the PGA of 0.25 g, 0.4 g, 0.55 g and 0.7 g. Two MTMD systems, passive and active, with the number of TMDs from 1 to 8, are placed in specific points of the main span of bridge, adding a total mass ratio of 1 to 10% to the bridge. The parameters of the TMDs are optimized using Genetic Algorithm (GA). Also, the optimum force for active control is achieved by Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC). The results showed that the maximum displacement of the center of the bridge main span reduced 33% and 48% respectively by adding passive and active MTMD systems. The RMS of displacement reduced 37% and 47%, the velocity 36% and 42% and also the base shear in pylons, 27% and 47%, respectively by adding passive and active systems, in the best cases.

So far the study of near-field optical recording(NFR) suspensions has not been investigated sufficiently. In this study the optimization of a NFR suspension is performed using finite element method. NFR suspensions are required to have low compliance modes to allow the slider to comply with the rotating disk, and high tracking stiffness modes to maximize the servo bandwidth of the tracking controller First of all, a basic integrated type suspension model is obtained using topology optimization And the parametric study on the sensitivities of the compliance modes and tracking stiffness modes is performed. Finally, a model satisfying static characteristics is elected and shape optimization is performed to improve dynamic characteristics.

Responses of semi-rigid frames having different degrees of semi-rigidity obtained by the nonlinear static analysis (NSA) are evaluated at specific target displacements by comparing them with those obtained by the nonlinear time-history analysis (NTHA) for scaled earthquakes. The peak ground accelerations (PGA) of the earthquakes are scaled such that the obtained peak top story displacements match with the target displacements. Three different types of earthquakes are considered, namely, far-field and near-field earthquakes with directivity and fling-step effects. In order to make the study a comprehensive one, three degrees of semi-rigidity (one fully rigid and the other two semi-rigid), and two frames having different heights are considered. An ensemble of five-time histories of ground motion is included in each type of earthquake. A large number of responses are considered in the study. They include the peak top-story displacement, maximum inter-story drift ratio, peak base shear, total number of plastic hinges, and square root of sum of the squares (SRSS) of the maximum plastic hinge rotations. Results of the study indicate that the nonlinear static analysis provides a fairly good estimate of the peak values of top-story displacements, inter-story drift ratio (for shorter frame), peak base shear and number of plastic hinges; however, the SRSS of maximum plastic hinge rotations in semi-rigid frames are considerably more in the nonlinear static analysis as compared to the nonlinear time history analysis.
Wake downstream of an object in the stratified flow has been of long-standing interest in fluid dynamics because of its similarity to geophysical flow over topographical terrains and more recently, concerns about the wake left behind a body moving through the ocean thermocline. Decades of studies of geophysical flow have unveiled that the flow downstream of obstacles in stratified flow consists of attached wake and strong internal waves, or separated, fluctuating wake and persistent late wakes, all of which depend on the flow conditions. Among unique and interesting characteristics of the stratified flow past obstacles is the generation of coherent vortex structure in the late wake far downstream of the object. Without the density stratification, the flow field downstream becomes undisturbed after relatively fast diminishing of the near wake. However, no matter how small the stratification is, the flow field downstream self-develops coherent vortex structures even after diminishing of the near wake. This paper present a computational approach to simulate the generation mechanism of the coherent vortex and analysis of the vortical structure.
Deflection control in tall buildings is a challenging issue. Connecting of the towers is an interesting idea for architects as well as structural engineers. In this paper, two reinforced concrete core-wall towers are connected by a truss bridge with buckling restrained braces. The buildings are 40 and 60-story. The effect of the location of the bridge is investigated. Response spectrum analysis of the linear models is used to obtain the design demands and the systems are designed according to the reliable codes. Then, nonlinear time history analysis at maximum considered earthquake is performed to assess the seismic responses of the systems subjected to far-field and near-field record sets. Fiber elements are used for the reinforced concrete walls. On average, the inter-story drift ratio demand will be minimized when the bridge is approximately located at a height equal to 0.825 times the total height of the building. Besides, because of whipping effects, maximum roof acceleration demand is approximately two times the peak ground acceleration. Plasticity extends near the base and also in major areas of the walls subjected to the seismic loads.

Propeller fans are commonly equipped in outdoor units of air-conditioners to provide effective cooling in a dried heat exchanger. A new design technique was developed to satisfy requirements of aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance, which employs the intersection method of two cylinders for mean camber line. Three proto-types of propeller fan including Palm-Shaped, Highly-Swept(PSHS) fan (proto 3)were not only to provide low lift forces for dipole sound, but also to reduce the organized tip vortices interacting with the fan guide causing narrow-banded rotating instabilities. Cross-correlation technique was applied to study flow noise source characteristics for three proto-type fans designed. The cross-correlations between a microphone at far field and a hot-wire sensor at near field show that flows near hub region of proto 3 fan are less organized and the flow structures especially at high flow rate coefficients for proto 3 fan are less correlated with noise generated than other proto-types fans.

In this letter, a small-loop antenna for a mobile UHF RFID device is proposed. To achieve size reduction, a ferrite sheet optimized for a 900 MHz band is applied. The overall dimensions of the antenna are $46mm{\times}35mm{\times}0.24mm$, and it has a bandwidth of 45 MHz with a return loss of less than -6 dB. The proposed antenna satisfies near and far field UHF EPC global frequency band communications (902-928 MHz).

A 3D ultrasound image is desired in many medical examinations. However, the implementation of a 2D array, which is needed for a 3D image, is challenging with respect to fabrication, interconnection and cabling. A 2D sparse array, which needs fewer elements than a dense array, is a realistic way to achieve 3D images. Because the number of ways the elements can be placed in an array is extremely large, a method for optimizing the array configuration is needed. Previous research placed the target point far from the transducer array, making it impossible to optimize the array in the operating range. In our study, we focused on optimizing a 2D sparse array transducer for 3D imaging by using a simulated annealing method. We compared the far-field optimization method with the near-field optimization method by analyzing a point-spread function (PSF). The resolution of the optimized sparse array is comparable to that of the dense array.

This paper analyzes the local specific absorption rates (SAR's) averaged over 1 g and 10 g in a human head model in contact with a mobile phone operating at 835 MHz. The used numerical method is a total field finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique. The phone was simulated with a conducting box, a plastic case, and a whip antennal composed of a monopole and a helix. The discrete human model of the spatial resolution 3 mm is based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT) and anatomical images. The near field and far field and far field patterns were analyzed for extended and retracted phone. The two methods to take the volumes of the weights, 1 g or 10 g in tissue are proposed and compared to offer a reproductive technique for SAR estimations.
