In this paper the dynamic stiffness matrix method was used for the free vibration analysis of axially moving micro beam with constant velocity. The extended Hamilton's principle was employed to derive the governing differential equation of the problem using the modified couple stress theory. The dynamic stiffness matrix of the moving micro beam was evaluated using appropriate expressions of the shear force and bending moment according to the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The effects of the beam size and axial velocity on the dynamic characteristic of the moving beam were investigated. The natural frequencies and critical velocity of the axially moving micro beam were also computed for two different end conditions.
Any rational approach to define the configuration and size of viscous fluid dampers in a structure should be based on the dynamic properties of the system with the dampers. In this paper we propose an alternative representation of the complex eigenvalues of multi degree of freedom systems with dampers to calculate new equivalent natural frequencies. Analytical expressions for the dynamic properties of a two-story building model with a linear viscous damper in the first floor (i.e. with a non-proportional damping matrix) are derived. The formulas permit to obtain the equivalent damping ratios and equivalent natural frequencies for all the modes as a function of the mass, stiffness and damping coefficient for underdamped and overdamped systems. It is shown that the commonly used formula to define the equivalent natural frequency is not applicable for this type of system and for others where the damping matrix is not proportional to the mass matrix, stiffness matrix or both. Moreover, the new expressions for the equivalent natural frequencies expose a novel phenomenon; the use of viscous fluid dampers can modify the vibration frequencies of the structure. The significance of the new equivalent natural frequencies is expounded by means of a simulated free vibration test. The proposed approach may offer a new perspective to study the effect of viscous dampers on the dynamic properties of a structure.

In this study, a finite element formulation based first-order shear deformation theory is developed for non-linear behaviors of laminated composite plates containing matrix cracking. The multi-directional stiffness degradation is developed for adopting the stiffness variation induced from matrix cracking, which is proposed by Duan and Yao. The matrix cracking can be expressed in terms of the variation of material properties, such as Young's modulus, shear modulus and Possion ratio of plates, and sequently it is possible to predict the variation of the local stiffness. Using the assumed natural strain method, the present shell element generates neither membrane nor shear locking behavior. Numerical examples demonstrate that the present element behaves quite satisfactorily either for the linear or geometrical nonlinear analysis of laminated composite plates. The results of laminated composite plates with matrix cracking may be the benchmark test for the non-linear analysis of damaged laminated composite plates.

This study proposes a simple method that uses a simple mass-spring model to predict the natural frequency of a soil-pile-structure system in sandy soil. This model includes a pair of matrixes, i.e., a mass matrix and a stiffness matrix. The mass matrix is comprised of the masses of the pile and superstructure, and the stiffness matrix is comprised of the stiffness of the pile and the spring coefficients between the pile and soil. The key issue in the evaluation of the natural frequency of a soil-pile system is the determination of the spring coefficient between the pile and soil. To determine the reasonable spring coefficient, subgrade reaction modulus, nonlinear p-y curves and elastic modulus of the soil were utilized. The location of the spring was also varied with consideration of the infinite depth of the pile. The natural frequencies calculated by using the mass-spring model were compared with those obtained from 1-g shaking table model pile tests. The comparison showed that the calculated natural frequencies match well with the results of the 1-g shaking table tests within the range of computational error when the three springs, whose coefficients were calculated using Reese's(1974) subgrade reaction modulus and Yang's (2009) dynamic p-y backbone curves, were located above the infinite depth of the pile.

Based on the analytic expression for the elasto-dynamic behavior of rotating shaft, the transfer matrix is formulated for the shaft element with uniform cross-section. Timoshenko beam theory is Introduced for modeling the behavior of shaft. Complex variables representing the displacement, slope, moment and shear force are used for deriving the transfer matrix between both ends of the shaft element. Simulation result obtained by applying the transfer matrix to a general rotor model is compared with the reference result and proved to be exact. Natural frequencies and the corresponding modes are analyzed with varying the bearing: stiffness. The generally used bearings are considered for discussions. and the bearing stiffness is shown to affect the vibration characteristics of rotor.
Using two different, but related approaches, an exact dynamic stiffness matrix for a two-part beam-mass system is developed from the free vibration theory of a Bernoulli-Euler beam. The first approach is based on matrix transformation while the second one is a direct approach in which the kinematical conditions at the interfaces of the two-part beam-mass system are satisfied. Both procedures allow an exact free vibration analysis of structures such as a plane or a space frame, consisting of one or more two-part beam-mass systems. The two-part beam-mass system described in this paper is essentially a structural member consisting of two different beam segments between which there is a rigid mass element that may have rotatory inertia. Numerical checks to show that the two methods generate identical dynamic stiffness matrices were performed for a wide range of frequency values. Once the dynamic stiffness matrix is obtained using any of the two methods, the Wittrick-Williams algorithm is applied to compute the natural frequencies of some frameworks consisting of two-part beam-mass systems. Numerical results are discussed and the paper concludes with some remarks.

In this study free vibration analysis of a cracked Goland composite wing is investigated. The wing is modelled as a cantilevered beam based on Euler- Bernoulli equations. Also, composite material is modelled based on lamina fiber-reinforced. Edge crack is modelled by additional boundary conditions and local flexibility matrix in crack location, Castigliano's theorem and energy release rate formulation. Governing differential equations are extracted by Hamilton's principle. Using the separation of variables method, general solution in the normalized form for bending and torsion deflection is achieved then expressions for the cross-sectional rotation, the bending moment, the shear force and the torsional moment for the cantilevered beam are obtained. The cracked beam is modelled by separation of beam into two interconnected intact beams. Free vibration analysis of the beam is performed by applying boundary conditions at the fixed end, the free end, continuity conditions in the crack location of the beam and dynamic stiffness matrix determinant. Also, the effects of various parameters such as length and location of crack and fiber angle on natural frequencies and mode shapes are studied. Modal analysis results illustrate that natural frequencies and mode shapes are affected by depth and location of edge crack and coupling parameter.

In this paper, a method for identifying the location and extent of a damage in a structure using residual forces was presented. Element stiffness matrix reduction parameters in a finite element model were used to describe the damaged structure mathematically. The element stiffness matrix reduction parameters were determined by minimizing a global error derived from dynamic residual vectors, which were obtained by introducing a simulated experimental data into the eigenvalue problem. Genetic algorithm was used to get the solution set of element stiffness reduction parameters. The proposed scheme was verified using Euler-Bernoulli beam. The results were presented in the form of tables and charts.

Derivation procedures of exact dynamic element stiffness matrix of shear deformable nonsymmetric thin-walled straight beams are rigorously presented for the spatial free vibration analysis. An exact dynamic element stiffness matrix is established from governing equations for a uniform beam element with nonsymmetric thin-walled cross section. First this numerical technique is accomplished via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem by introducing 14 displacement parameters and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. Thus, the displacement functions of dispalcement parameters are exactly derived and finally exact stiffness matrices are determined using member force-displacement relationships. The natural frequencies are evaluated and compared with analytic solutions or results of the analysis using ABAQUS' shell elements for the thin-walled straight beam structure in order to demonstrate the validity of this study.

Recently, turbomachine blades are becoming larger and more flexible, it is necessary to calculate natural frequencies of a rotating blades for avoiding resonance. This problem is complicated by the fact that blades are tapered, twisted and curved. To keep with this demands, the designer must rely on more exact methods of calculation. In this paper, natural frequencies of a single straight or curved blade with variable R.P.M. are calculated by a stiffness matrix method. Results of investigation on the correspondence between the calculated and other values of the literature are described. The calculated values are agree with the other values but with a small error. Furthermore, the influence of Coriolis force on the natural frequency for rotating, curved turbo blades is described.
