  • In this study, change of hydration property with contents and type of gypsum in ternary natural hydraulic lime containing blast furnace slag and gypsum was investigated. Anhydrite, hemihydrate and dihydrate were added 3 % and 10 %, respectively in natural hydraulic lime adding blast furnace slag 20 %. Hydration and physical behavior due to solubility and reactivity of different types of gypsum were analyzed in early hydration. As a result of analysis of hydration properties, in all samples, hydrates such as ettringite and C-S-H were produced in early hydration, and amount of hydrates with increase of hydration time was increased. In the case of compressive strength, when contents of gypsum are 3 %, it was higher compressive strength than other specimens. At hydration 28 days, for addition of anhydrite and hemihydrate, compressive strength was more than adding dihydrate.

  • Heavy duty diesel engine has relatively small portion of whole vehicles due to long drive distance and large engine displacement, but largely influences atmosphere environment. City buses changed to CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) bus with Korea-Japan Worldcup. Heavy duty truck and intercity bus, however, were impossible to use CNG because those kinds of vehicles had long drive distance and CNG station was installed mainly at the around of the bus garage of city. Insulation container storing the natural gas as a liquid makes heavy duty truck and intercity bus possible to use the natural gas. Drive using diesel is possible where is hard to recharge the gas. With LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), the dependence on oil is largely decreased, PM (Particulate Matter) and NOx which is chronic disadvantage of diesel is remarkably reduced and finally $CO_2$, the representative green house gas, is reduced over 10%.

  • The spectroscopic characteristics of synthetic and natural emeralds were investigated by UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy before and after heat treatment. The Mo and Co for synthetic flux and C1 for synthetic hydrothermal emeralds have been detected by X-ray fluorescence analysis. In the region of UV-Visible, the absorption of emerald from Colombia was generally increased after the heat treatment. The peak which related to C1 component in the $3000-2600cm^{-1}$ was shown in the hydrothermal synthetic emeralds by FTIR spectroscopy. The $2358cm^{-1}$ peak which originates from $CO_2$ was decreased after the heat treatment in the natural emerald. This was corresponded with the changes of gas element after heat treatment.

  • Molecular characterization technology in genetically modified organisms, in addition to how transgenic biotechnologies are developed now require full transparency to assess the risk to living modified and non-modified organisms. Next generation sequencing (NGS) methodology is suggested as an effective means in genome characterization and detection of transgenic insertion locations. In the present study, we applied NGS to insert transgenic loci, specifically the epidermal growth factor (EGF) in genetically modified rice cells. A total of 29.3 Gb (${\sim}72{\times}coverage$) was sequenced with a $2{\times}150bp$ paired end method by Illumina HiSeq2500, which was consecutively mapped to the rice genome and T-vector sequence. The compatible pairs of reads were successfully mapped to 10 loci on the rice chromosome and vector sequences were validated to the insertion location by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification. The EGF transgenic site was confirmed only on chromosome 4 by PCR. Results of this study demonstrated the success of NGS data to characterize the rice genome. Bioinformatics analyses must be developed in association with NGS data to identify highly accurate transgenic sites.

  • Natural gas is one of the most promising alternatives to gasoline and diesel fuels because of its high thermal efficiency and lower harmful emissions, including $CO_2$. However, the possibility of partial burn and misfire makes the benefits of natural gas fueled engine worse under lean burn operation condition, Hydrogen addition can promote the combustion characteristics while reduces emissions extremely. In this study, the effect of hydrogen addition on an engine performance was investigated. The results showed that thermal efficiency was increased due to the expansion of lean operation range under stable operation. NOx emission can be significantly reduced with the small increase in HC or CO emissions.

  • The preservation treatment for the outer rampart of Namhansanseong fortress is needed due to partial collapse and separation of stone materials. In this study, we investigated the petrological features of the stone materials used for the outer rampart and estimated their provenances through the geologic survey. Through the above study, the suitable replacement stone in the maintenance of outer rampart were suggested. The stone materials of the above outer rampart consist of the banded gneiss, augen gneiss, granitic gneiss and porphyroblastic gneiss. Among these four kinds of rocks, granitic gneiss is quantitatively the most abundant. Petrological comparisons between stone materials and rocks distributed around the fortress, lead to the conclusion that the above materials are likely to have been delivered from around the fortress. Judging from the results of the comparison on frequency of use and strength characteristics among the above rocks, the granitic gneiss is considered to be suitable for restoration of the outer rampart of the fortress.

  • Interfacial evaluation of the untreated and treated Jute and Hemp fibers reinforced different matrix polypropylene-maleic anhydride polypropylene copolymer (PP-MAPP) composites were investigated by micromechanical technique and dynamic contact angle measurement. For the statistical tensile strength of Jute and Hemp fibers, bimodal Weibull distribution was fitted better than the unimodal distribution. The acid-base parameter on the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the natural fiber composites was characterized by calculating the work adhesion, $W_a$. The effect of alkaline, silane coupling agent on natural fibers were obtained with changing MAPP content in PP-MAPP matrices. Alkaline treated fibers made the surface energy to be higher due to removing the weak boundary layers and thus increasing surface area, whereas surface energy of silane treated Jute and Hemp fibers decreased due to blocked high energy sites. MAPP in the PP-MAPP matrix caused the surface energy to increase due to introduced acid-base sites. Microfailure modes of two natural fiber composites were observed clearly differently due to different tensile strength of natural fibers.

  • PURPOSE. This study aimed to evaluate the maximum vertical wear, volume wear, and surface characteristic of antagonist enamel, opposing monolithic zirconia or lithium disilicate crowns. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The study comprised 24 participants (n = 12), who were randomly allocated to receive either a 5 mol% Y-TZP or a lithium disilicate crown in positions which would oppose the natural first molar tooth. The contralateral first molar along with its antagonist was considered as the enamel opposing natural enamel control. Data collection was performed using an intraoral scanner and polyvinylsiloxane impression. The means of the maximum vertical loss and the volume loss at the occlusal contact areas of the crowns and the various natural antagonists were measured by 3D comparison software. A scanning electron microscope was subsequently used to assess the wear characteristics. RESULTS. The one-year results from 22 participants (n = 11) indicated no significant differences when comparing the zirconia crown's antagonist enamel (40.28 ± 9.11 ㎛, 0.04 ± 0.02 mm3) and the natural enamel wear (38.91 ± 7.09 ㎛, 0.04 ± 0.02 mm3) (P > .05). Also, there is no significant differences between lithium disilicate crown's antagonist enamel (47.81 ± 9.41 ㎛, 0.04 ± 0.02 mm3) and the natural enamel wear (39.11 ± 7.90 ㎛, 0.04 ± 0.02 mm3) (P > .05). CONCLUSION. While some studies suggested that monolithic zirconia caused less wear on opposing enamel than lithium disilicate, this study found similar wear levels to enamel for both materials compared to natural teeth.

  • Piezoelectric energy harvesting from our surrounding vibration has been studied for driving the wireless sensor node. To change the vibration energy into the electric-energy efficiently, the natural frequency of cantilever needs to be adjusted to that of a vibration source. When adding 6.80g mass on the end of the fabricated cantilever, a natural frequency shifts from 136 Hz into 49.5 Hz. In addition, electro-mechanical coupling factor increased from 10.20% to 11.90% and resulted in the 1.18 times increase of maximum output power.

  • A fluorescing, copolymer(Q)-bearing, quaternary ammonium pendant was mixed with excess natural salmon sperm DNA with a molecular weight of $1.3{\times}10^6$(2,000 base pairs) to afford highly fluorescing, complex mixtures. The fluorescence life-time of the polymer Q was greatly increased when mixed with DNA: for the mixture of Q:DNA=1:750 the fast and slow decay lifetimes increased from ca. 10 to 100 ps and from 20 ps to ca. 1 ns, respectively. The enhanced fluorescence of the mixtures was ascribed to efficient compartmentalization and reduced conformational relaxation of the polymer Q by complexation with excess DNA.
