In general, natural gas engine converted from gasoline engine has disadvantage of power decrease. In order to increase power output in natural gas engine, the improvement of in-cylinder flow motion has been believed as the most effective method. In this study, the geometry of combustion chamber in 4 valve DOHC natural gas engine is modified, and in-cylinder flow patterns is analyized. Also engine performance is evaluated according to the modification of in-cylinder flow motion.
Using finite elements, a simulation is prformed for the pipe systems to investigate free vibrational characteristics, that is natural frequencies, considering the intial tension due to the velocity and the pressure of the inside fluid flow. To confirm the program developed in this study, the results are compared with the results of commercial software ANSYS. When the initial tension is neglected in curved pipes, the natural frequencies are reduced as flow velocity increases, and the rapid decreases of the natural frequencies took place. However, when the initial tension is taken into account, the natural frequencies are not changed with the change of the flow velocity. In free vibrational simulation of pipe systems, it is necessary to calculate the initial state force due to the velocity and the pressure of the fluid flow from the equilibrium first, then the force should be included in the equation of motion of the systems to get more accurate natural frequencies.
Effect of natural convention for hot plate surface temperature uniformity was studied by experiments that were adjusted height of chamber and temperature difference. The hot plate chamber is composed of the hot plate and the upper heater and adiabatic vertical wall. The hot plate diameter is 220mm and maintains temperature at $150^{\circ}C$. Flow pattern compares with surface temperature and confirms that natural convection affects on temperature uniformity of hot plate surface. In case, temperature non-uniformity of hot plate surface is due to heater pattern, lots of weak and small flow cells more improve temperature uniformity than stronger flow cells or non-developing flow cell. Improve temperature uniformity $1.2^{\circ}C$ when developing weak and small flow cells.

An algorithm for modeling the filling of metal into a mold and solidification has been developed. This algorithm uses the implicit VOF method for a filling and a general implicit source-based method for solidification. The model for simultaneous filling and solidification is applied to the two-dimensional filling and solidification of a square cavity. The effects of the wall temperature and gate position on the solidification are examined. The mixed natural convection flow and residual flow resulting from the completion of a filling are included in this study to investigate the coupled effects of the filling and natural convection on solidification. Two different filling configurations (assisting flow and opposite flow due to the gate position) are analysed to study the effects of residual flow on solidification. The results clearly show the necessity to carry out a coupled filling and solidification analysis including the effect of natural convection.

An 1/21.6 scaled experimental facility was prepared utilizing the results of a scaling analysis to simulate the APRI400 reactor and insulation system. The behaviors of the boiling-induced two-phase natural circulation flow in the insulation gap were observed, and the liquid mass flow rates driven by natural circulation loop were measured by varying the wall heat flux, upper exit slot area and configuration. And non-heating experiments have also been performed and discussed to certify the hydraulic similarity of the heating experiments by injecting air equivalent to the steam generated in the heating experimental condition.
In general, the upstream dam changes downstream flow regime dramatically, i.e., from natural flow regime to hydropeaking flows. This study investigates the impact of the natural flow pattern on downstream fish habitat in a regulated river in Korea using the physical habitat simulation. The study area is a 13.4 km long reach of the Geum-gang River, located downstream from the Yongdam Dam, Korea. A field monitoring revealed that three fish species are dominant, namely Zacco platypus, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, and Opsariichthys bidens, and they account for 70% of the total fish community. Specially, Opsariichthys bidens is an indigenous species in the Geum-gang River. The three fish species are selected as target fish species for the physical habitat simulation. The Nays2D model, a 2D shallow water equation solver, and the HSI (Habitat Suitability Index) model are used for hydraulic and habitat simulations, respectively. To assess the impact of the natural flow pattern, this study uses the annual natural flow regime and hydropeaking flows from the dam. It is found that the natural flow regime increases significantly the Composite Suitability Index (CSI) in the study reach. Then, using the Building Block Approach (BBA), the scenarios for the modifying dam operations are presented in the study reach. Both Scenario 1 and scenario 2 are proposed by using the hydrological method considering both magnitude and duration of the inflow and averaging the inflow over each month, respectively. It is revealed that the natural flow regime embodied in scenario 1 and scenario 2 increases the Weighted Usable Area (WUA) significantly, compared to the hydropeaking flows. In conclusion, the modifying the dam operations by restoring to the natural flow pattern is advantageous to fish community.
Vibrational characteristics of curved pipe structures are investigated with respect to the change of inside flow velocities. Based upon the Hamilton's principle, the equations of motions are derived, and the finite element equation is constructed to solve the frequency equation for curved pipe structures. When the initial tension is neglected in cured pipes, the natural frequencies are reduced as flow velocity increases, and the rapid decreases of the natural frequencies take place. However, when the initial tension is taken into account, the natural frequencies are not changed with the change of the flow velocity. In free vibrational simulation of pipe systems, it is necessary to calculate the initial force due to the velocity and the pressure of the fluid flow from the equilibrium. The force should be included in the equation of motion of the systems to get more accurate natural frequencies. The mechanical properties like stiffness or the location of pipe support need to be changed to avoid resonance. The natural frequencies are to be isolated from the frequency range of dominant vibration modes. The angles of elbows do not affect the change of the fundamental natural frequency, but affect the change of the third or higher natural frequencies.

When a molten corium is relocated in a lower head of a reactor vessel, the ERVC (External Reactor Vessel Cooling) system is actuated as coolant is supplied into a reactor cavity to remove a decay heat from the molten corium during a severe accident. To achieve this severe accident mitigation strategy, the two-phase natural circulation flow in the annular gap between the external reactor vessel and the insulation should be formed sufficiently by designing the coolant inlet/outlet area and gap size adequately on the insulation device. For this reason, one-dimensional natural circulation flow tests and the simple analysis were conducted to estimate the natural circulation flow under the ERVC condition of APR1400. The experimental facility is one-dimensional and scaled down as the half height and 1/238 channel area of the APR1400 reactor vessel. The calculated circulation flow rate was similar to experimental ones within about ${\pm}$15% error bounds and depended on the form loss due to the inlet/outlet area.

Frequently occurring flood and drought have increased the necessity of an effective water resources control and management of river flows. Therefore, the simulation of the flow distribution in natural rivers is very important to the solution of a wide variety of practical flow problems in water resources engineering. Usually in many flow problems, two-dimensional approach can provide good estimates of complex flow features in the flow around islands and obstructions, flow at confluence and flow in braided channel. The objective of this study is to examine validation of developed an accurate and robust two-dimensional finite element method with wet and dry simulation in complex natural rivers. Milyang river, and Kumho river and Keum river were performed for tests. The results were compared with those of existing model. The suggested model displayed reasonable flow distribution compared with existing model in dry area for application of natural river flow. As a result of this study, the developed general two-dimensional model provide a reliable results for flow distribution of wet and dry domain, it could be further developed to basis for extending to water quality and sediment transport analysis.
A marine reactor shows very different thermal-hydraulic characteristics compared to a land- based reactor. Especially, study on the variation of flow field due to ship motions such as inclination, heaving and rolling is essential since the flow variation has great influence on the reactor cooling capability. In this study, the natural circulation characteristics of integral type marine reactor with modular steam generators were analyzed using computational fluid dynamics code, CFX-4, for inclined conditions. The numerical analyses are performed using the results of natural circulation experiments for integral reactor which are already conducted at Seoul National University. From the results, it was found that the flow rate in the ascending steam generator cassettes increases due to buoyancy effect. Due to this flow variation, temperature difference occurs at the outlets of the each steam generator cassettes. which is mitigated through downcomer by thermal mixing. Also, around the upper pressure header the flow from descending hot leg goes up to the ascending steam generator cassettes due to large natural circulation driving force in ascending steam generator cassettes. From this result, the increase of How rate in the ascending steam generator cassettes could be understood qualitatively.
