Uncharted Diversity and Ecology of Saprolegniaceae (Oomycota) in Freshwater Environments

  • The fungal-like family Saprolegniaceae (Oomycota), also called "water mold," includes mostly aquatic saprophytes as well as notorious aquatic animal pathogens. Most studies on Saprolegniaceae have been biased toward pathogenic species that are important to aquaculture rather than saprotrophic species, despite the latter's crucial roles in carbon cycling of freshwater ecosystems. Few attempts have been made to study the diversity and ecology of Saprolegniaceae; thus, their ecological role is not well-known. During a survey of oomycetes between 2016 and 2021, we investigated the diversity and distribution of culturable Saprolegniaceae species in freshwater ecosystems of Korea. In the present study, members of Saprolegniaceae were isolated and identified at species level based on their cultural, morphological, and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Furthermore, substrate preference and seasonal dynamics for each were examined. Most of the species were previously reported as animal pathogens; however, in the present study, they were often isolated from other freshwater substrates, such as plant debris, algae, water, and soil sediment. The relative abundance of Saprolegniaceae was higher in the cold to cool season than that in the warm to hot season of Korea. This study enhances our understanding of the diversity and ecological attributes of Saprolegniaceae in freshwater ecosystems.

  • In many temperate forest ecosystems, large quantities of pine pollen are deposited over a short period in early summer (Doskey and Ugoagwu 1989). Because pollen grains decompose rapidly and have macronutrient concentrations, the pollen rain may be an important component of nutrient dynamics in natural terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems (Stark 1972).(omitted)

  • To monitor riparian wetlands as one of complex natural ecosystems using remotely sensed data, we need to concurrently consider vegetation, soil and water which constitute complicated wetland ecosystems. To identify riparian distribution we adopted linear Spectral Mixture Analysis in order to improve identification accuracy of riparian areas. This study has indicated that linear SMA adopting tasseled cap endmember selection is an enhanced routine for Identification of riparian wetlands and phenologically autumn imagery is more appropriate to detect riparian vegetation in the Paldang water catchment area.

일본(日本)의 수변(水邊) 생태계(生態系) 복원(復元)과 녹화(綠化) (Restoration and Rehabilitation of Wetland Ecosystems in Japan)

  • Present status of Japanese wetland ecosystems and several trials towards rehabilitation and restoration of them are reviewed. Most of wetlands are altered to paddy fields and city areas, and natural wet lowland including tideland is the most endangered nature in Japan. Not only the preservation of natural wetlands but also the conservation of secondary nature of paddy field and waterways in traditional rural areas and restoration of original nature in city areas became the most concerned theme for nature conservation according to the national strategy for the biodiversity conservation. Not only the technological development based on the conservation ecology, but also the development of mitigation banking system are needed in Japan.

Three Unreported Fungi Isolated From Reservoirs in Korea: Mortierella biramosa, Paraphoma radicina, and Sordaria macrospora

  • Freshwater ecosystems have a large reserve of latent biological resources that play an essential ecological role, and have significant economic and social value. Fungi in freshwater are prospective materials that can be used in the food, medicine, and biomass energy fields. In this study, three promising fungal species were isolated from freshwater ecosystems in Korea. These isolates were identified as Mortierella biramosa, Paraphoma radicina, and Sordaria macrospora, based on their cultural and morphological characteristics, as well as molecular phylogenetic analyses. These species were previously unknown in Korea. The finding allows us to explore its physiological and biochemical characteristics in more detail and use them as biological resources.

Trends in the effects of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems in the Republic of Korea

  • In this review, we aimed to synthesize the current knowledge on the observed and projected effects of climate change on the ecosystems of Korea (i.e., the Republic of Korea (ROK) or South Korea), as well as the main causes of vulnerability and options for adaptation in these ecosystems based on a range of ecological and biogeographical data. To this end, we compiled a set of peer-reviewed papers published since 2014. We found that publication of climate-related studies on plants has decreased in the field of plant phenology and physiology, whereas such publication has rapidly increased in plant and animal community ecology, reflecting the range shifts and abundance change that are occurring under climate change. Plant phenology studies showed that climate change has increased growing seasons by advancing the timing of flowering and budburst while delaying the timing of leafing out. Community ecology studies indicated that the future ranges of cold-adapted plants and animals could shrink or shift toward northern and high-elevation areas, whereas the ranges of warm-adapted organisms could expand and/or shift toward the areas that the aforementioned cold-adapted biota previously occupied. This review provides useful information and new insights that will improve understanding of climate change effects on the ecosystems of Korea. Moreover, it will serve as a reference for policy-makers seeking to establish future sectoral adaptation options for protection against climate change.

하천 생태계 복원을 위한 적정 유황 범위 고찰: 한강유역사례 (Flow Regime Boundary for Restoring River Ecosystems: A Case of the Han River Basin)

  • 하천에서 물이용을 위한 이수사업은 피할 수 없는 하천유황의 변화를 가져왔고, 이로 인하여 하천 생태계의 건전성을 훼손하고 있다. 우리나라의 경우 1990년대 들어 변화된 하천환경을 자연형 하천으로 복원하고자 하는 노력이 본격화 되었다. 하천 복원사업의 주된 목적은 수로를 복원하고, 오염된 하천의 개선, 생태계를 위한 서식처 설치 및 인간의 친수활동을 위한 공간 확보였으며, 상대적으로 생태계보전에 가장 중요한 요소인 하천에 흐르는 유황의 복원에 대한 관심은 적었다. 하천유황은 생태계의 모든 측면에서 큰 영향을 주기 때문에 유황과 생태계의 관계 규명과 하천에 유지하여야 할 목표유황의 설정 및 하천 유황복원 방법을 정립할 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 국내에서 아직 정립되지 않은 유황과 생태계의 관계를 환경유량의 개념을 통하여 소개하고 자연유황의 역할과 Richter et al.(1997)이 제안한 유량변동분석법(Range of Variability Approach, RVA)을 이용한 유황 평가 및 목표유량 설정 방법을 한강 유역의 사례를 통하여 고찰하였다.

생물다양성 증진을 위한 전국자연환경조사의 발전방안 - 선진 외국의 사례검토를 중심으로- (Alternatives of the Korean Nationwide Survey on Natural Environments to Promote Biodiversity Conservation)

  • 2006년부터 5년 계획으로 시작한 제3차 전국자연환경조사를 비롯한 우리나라 자연 환경조사의 실태와 일본, 독일, 미국, 영국의 자연환경조사체계를 비교 검토하였다. 국내 여건을 토대로 선진 외국과 우리나라 조사체계를 비교 검토한 결과, 생물종 중심의 자연환경조사에서 벗어나 서식지, 생태계 및 생태권역에 대한 조사를 실시하고, 나아가 위성영상이나 항공사진을 이용하여 토지자원의 공간분포를 주기적으로 파악하여야 할 것이다. 특히 위성영상은 생물종, 서식지, 생태계 조사를 위한 기초 자료로 활용하여야 한다. 조사내용 확대 및 다양한 정보수집을 위해 다방면의 전문인력을 확보하고, 지역주민의 자연환경 보전의식을 고취시키기 위해 자원봉사자의 참여를 유도해야 할 것이다. 전국에 걸친 생물종 및 생태계 조사, 데이터베이스 구축은 물론 자료의 분석 가공을 통해 자연환경정책 수립이나 생물다양성 국제협약에 대처하기 위해서는 독립된 전문조사기관의 설립이 필요하다. 전문조사기관의 설립을 통해서 물리적인 서식환경을 포함한 다양한 분야의 자연환경조사를 체계적으로 수행하고 생물다양성에 대한 종합적인 현황파악과 변화예측을 통해 보다 신속 정확한 자연환경 정보를 생성할 수 있을 것이다.

지하수 종속 생태환경에서 수문-생태학적 특성 조사 및 분석 (Hydro-ecological characterizations in groundwater dependent ecosystem)

  • 자연 하천과 연계된 지하수 종속 생태환경은 지하수와 지표수의 화학적, 수리적 구배차이에 의해 혼합이 활발히 일어나는 지역이다. 지표수와 지하수 사이의 상호작용은 지하수 종속 생태 환경에서의 생지화학 과정에 중요한 역할뿐만 아니라 이 지역을 수리생태학적 열점으로 만든다. 이 연구의 목적은 질산성 질소로 오염된 자연하천과 연계된 지하수 종속 생태환경의 특성을 수리지질학적, 화학적, 생물학적 방법을 이용하여 특성을 평가하는 것이다. 지하수 종속 생태환경에서 일어나는 지표수와 지하수 사이의 수직교환률은 현장에 다양한 깊이로 설치한 소형관정에서 측정한 수두구배를 근거하여 계산하였다. 본 연구에서는 생물학적 자연저감 퍼텐셜을 조사하기 위해 연쇄중합반응 및 클로닝 방법이 수행되었다. 연구 결과, 지하수 종속 생태환경의 혼합수 유동률은 다소 미생물의 활동, 그리고 질산성 질소의 농도에 영향을 미치고 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 지표수-지하수 혼합구간의 토양에서 분리된 탈질미생물은 특정조건하에서 지하수 종속 생태환경에서의 생분해능력을 고무할 수 있다.

Oak Tree Canker Disease Supports Arthropod Diversity in a Natural Ecosystem

  • Microorganisms have many roles in nature. They may act as decomposers that obtain nutrients from dead materials, while some are pathogens that cause diseases in animals, insects, and plants. Some are symbionts that enhance plant growth, such as arbuscular mycorrhizae and nitrogen fixation bacteria. However, roles of plant pathogens and diseases in natural ecosystems are still poorly understood. Thus, the current study addressed this deficiency by investigating possible roles of plant diseases in natural ecosystems, particularly, their positive effects on arthropod diversity. In this study, the model system was the oak tree (Quercus spp.) and the canker disease caused by Annulohypoxylon truncatum, and its effects on arthropod diversity. The oak tree site contained 44 oak trees; 31 had canker disease symptoms while 13 were disease-free. A total of 370 individual arthropods were detected at the site during the survey period. The arthropods belonged to 25 species, 17 families, and seven orders. Interestingly, the cankered trees had significantly higher biodiversity and richness compared with the canker-free trees. This study clearly demonstrated that arthropod diversity was supported by the oak tree canker disease.
