  • Two-dimensional natural convection within a circular trapezoidal cavity with parallel cylindrical top and bottom walls at different temperatures and two adiabatic side walls has been solved by finite-difference methods. This study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of aspect ratio and inclination in the natural convection for various Rayleigh numbers. The minimum average Nusselt number occurs at the point of transition from a conductive heat transfer to a convective heat transfer. Numerical results are compared to experimental results with qualitatively good agreement.

  • Transition of flows in natural convection in a horizontal cylindrical annulus is investigated for the fluid with Pr=0.2. The unsteady streamfunction-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. As Rayleigh number is increased, the steady crescent-shaped eddy flow bifurcates to a time-periodic flow with like-rotating eddies. After the first Hopf bifurcation, however, a reverse transition from oscillatory to a steady flow occurs by the flow pattern variation. Hysteresis phenomenon occurs between the solution branches of up-scan and down-scan stages, and dual solutions with one steady and one oscillatory flow are found. Overall Nusselt of the flows at the flows at the down-scan stage is greater than that at the up-scan stage.

  • A fin of finite width with infinitely small thickness is assumed to be placed horizontally between two horizontal parallel plates of infinite extension in the exactly central position. The lower plate and the half of the upper plate are kept at a constant lower temperature, and the remaining upper plate is kept at a constant higher temperature. The fin is also kept at a constant temperature (variable). Steady-state two-dimensional laminar natural convection is analyzed as a problem of boundary value under a boundary-fitted conformal mapping system, using a spectral finite difference scheme, with a condition of doubly-connectedness. The steady-state solution is obtained as a limit of the transient solution.

  • Natural convection within a wedge-shaped enclosure has been studied numerically by finite difference method. Radial surfaces of the wedge are isothermally hot and cold while circumferential surfaces are insulated. Results show isotherms, streamlines and velocity profiles as well as Nusselt number distributions for a Rayleigh number range of $10^3$ to $10^5$. In addition, it is found that there is a wedge angle as shown the minimum mean Nusselt number for using an insulated enclosure.

  • This paper presents a method that the engine oil condition is detected using a natural convection heat transfer in a engine oil. A sensor circuit maintains a constant temperature difference between a heat plate and engine oil for detecting a natural convection heat transfer rate on the constant temperature. The natural convection heat transfer rate is measured by a current through the heat plate of the sensor circuit. The sensor is tested by a fresh oil. 6,000 km and 10,000 km driven oil in the oil temperature range from $20^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$. In the experimental result, when the current through the heat plate is altered by variation of a engine oil temperature and flows driven oil more than fresh oil, the sensor could inform a engine oil deterioration to a car driver.

  • Natural convection in a horizontal annulus with the inner cylinder heated by the application of a constant heat flux and the isothermally cooled outer cylinder is considered, and the transition of flows and the bifurcation phenomenon are numerically investigated for air with Pr=0.7. The zero initial condition always induces a crescent-sheped eddy flow. A bicellular flow in which the fluid descends along the vertical central plane of the annulus can be obtained at high Rayleigh number by introducing artificial numerical disturbances. Dual solutions are found above a certain critical Rayleigh number. Hysteresis phenomena have not been observed.

  • Natural convection of a fluid with the Prandtl number of 7(water) in a horizontal annulus with constant temperature walls is numerically investigated. The inner cylinder is hotter than the outer cylinder. The flows are classified by the number of eddies in a half annulus. It is found that dual or triple solutions exists above a critical Rayleigh number for an annulus with a aspect ratio $D_i/L=4$. Transitions of $3{\rightarrow}1$ and $2{\rightarrow}1$ eddy flow occur with decrease of Rayleigh number. However, reverse transitions of $1{\rightarrow}3$ and $1{\rightarrow}2$ eddy flow do not occur with increase of Rayleigh number, and no hysteresis phenomenon is observed. In the regime of triple solutions, the 3 eddy flow has the largest mean Nusselt number value and the 1 eddy flow has the smallest value.

  • A numerical investigation has been performed to discuss the radiation-affected steady-laminar natural convection induced by a hot inner cylinder under a large temperature difference in the annuli filled with a gray gas. To examine the effects of thermal radiation on thermo-fluid dynamic behaviors in the eccentric geometry, the generalized body-fitted coordinate system is introduced while the finite volume method (FVM) is used for solving the radiative transport equation. After validating the numerical results for the case without radiation, the detailed radiation effect has been discussed. Based on the results of this study, when there exists a large temperature difference between two cylinders, the existence of radiatively participating medium is found to incur a distinct difference in fluid dynamic as well as thermal behavior.

  • Natural convection heat transfer in an enclosure with an opening in the right vertical wall and a heat source at the bottom surface is investigated using a holographic interferometric technique. The effects of the opening length, divider length attached to the top wall, and heater temperature on the temperature distribution are examined. The openging length as well as the divider length greatly affects the degree of inflow and outflow of air. With a small opening, the opening doesn't affect much the upward warm air flow resulting in the symmetric temperature distribution. On the other hand, with the increase of the opening length, the inward cold flow moves the upward flow to the left direction. With the increase of the divider length, temperature in the lower region of enclosure becomes higher for the small opening and lower for the large opening.

  • This study is aimed at investigating the thermal behavior of immersion-cooled high power LED lighting engines. 3D CFD models have been generated for the numerical analysis. Five cases in terms of the configuration of LED chips have been explored for various passive cooling conditions of the lighting engine, i.e., the natural air convection with a lens, the natural air convection without a lens, the deionized water-immersion cooling condition with a lens. The numerical study reveals that the deionized water-immersion cooled lighting engine has nearly twice better thermal performance than the natural air convection cooled lighting engine containing a lens. The investigation has also demonstrated that the four chips configuration has the better thermal performance than the single chip configuration.
