This paper reports briefly on the computational results of a turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection with the elliptic-blending second-moment closure (EBM). The primary emphasis of the study is placed on an investigation of accuracy and numerical stability of the elliptic-blending second-moment closure for the turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection. The turbulent heat fluxes in this study are treated by the algebraic flux model with the temperature variance and molecular dissipation rate of turbulent heat flux. The model is applied to the prediction of the turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection for Rayleigh numbers ranging from $Ra=2{\times}10^6$ to $Ra=10^9$, and the computed results are compared with the previous experimental correlations, T-RANS and LES results. The predicted cell-averaged Nusselt number follows the correlation by Peng et al.(2006) ($Nu=0.162Ra^{0.286}$) in the 'soft' convective turbulence region ($2{\times}10^6{\leq}Ra{\leq}4{\times}10^7$) and it follows the experimental correlation by Niemela et al. (2000) ($Nu=0.124Ra^{0.309}$) in the 'hard' convective tubulence region ($10^8{\leq}Ra{\leq}10^9$) within 5% accuracy. This results show that the elliptic-blending second-moment closure with an algebraic flux model predicts very accurately the Rayleigh Benard convection.
A comparative study on the treatment of the turbulent heat flux with the elliptic blending second-moment closure for a natural convection flow is performed. Three cases of different treating the turbulent heat flux are considered. Those are the generalized gradient diffusion hypothesis (GGDH), the algebraic flux model (AFM) and the differential flux model (DFM). The constants in the models are adjusted with a primary emphasis placed on the accuracy of predicting the local Nusselt number. These models are implemented in a computer code specially designed for evaluation of turbulent models. Calculations are performed for a turbulent natural convection in the 1:5 rectangular cavity and the calculated results are compared with the available experimental data. The results show that the three models produce nearly the same accuracy of solutions. These results show that the GGDH, AFM and DFM models for treating the turbulent heat flux are sufficient for this simple shear flow where the shear production is dominant. It is observed that, in the weakly stratified region at the center zone of the cavity, the vertical velocity fluctuation is nearly zero in the GGDH solutions, which shows that the GGDH model may not be suitable for the strongly stratified flow. Thus, further study on the strongly stratified flow should be followed.

In dish concentrating system, natural convection heat loss occurs in cavity receiver. Heat loss mechanisms of conduction, convection, and radiation can reduce the system efficiency. To obtain the high efficiency, the receiver is to absorb the maximum of solar energy and transfer to the working fluid with maximum of heat losses. The convection heat loss is an important factor to determine the system performance. Numerical analysis of the convection heat loss of receiver was carried out for varing inclinaton angle from 0$^{\cdot}$ to 70$^{\cdot}$ with temperature range from 400$^{\cdot}C$ to 600$^{\cdot}C$ using the commercial software package, Fluent 6.0. The result of numerical analysis was comparable with convection heat loss model of solar receiver.
A two-dimensional numerical model is developed and applied to the LAVA-EXV tests performed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) to investigate the external cooling effect on the thermal margin to failure of a reactor pressure vessel (RPV) during a severe accident. The computational program was written to predict the temperature profile of a two-dimensional spherical vessel segment accounting for the conjugate heat transfer mechanisms of conduction through the debris and the vessel, natural convection within the molten debris pool, and the possible ablation of the vessel wall in contact with the high temperature melt. Results of the sensitivity analysis and comparison with the LAVA-EXV test data indicated that the developed computational tool carries a high potential for simulating the thermal behavior of the RPV during a core melt relocation accident. It is concluded that the main factors affecting the RPV failure are the natural convection within the debris pool and the ablation of the metal vessel, The simplistic natural convection model adopted in the computational program partly made up for the absence of the mechanistic momentum consideration in this study. Uncertainties in the prediction will be reduced when the natural convection and ablation phenomena are more rigorously dealt with in the code, and if more accurate initial and time-dependent conditions are supplied from the test in terms of material composition and its associated thermophysical properties.
A numerical study of a laminar natural convection of the CuO-water nanofluid in a square cavity using the Buongiorno's nonhomogeneous model is presented. All the governing equations including the volume fraction equation are discretized on a cell-centered, non-uniform grid employing the finite-volume method with a primitive variable formulation. Calculations are performed over a range of Rayleigh numbers and volume fractions of the nanopartile. From the computed results, it is shown that both the homogeneous and nonhomogeneous models predict the deterioration of the natural convection heat transfer well with an increase of the volume fraction of nanoparticle at the same Rayleigh number, which was observed in the previous experimental studies. It is also shown that the differences in the computed results of the average Nusselt number at the wall between the homogeneous and nonhomogeneous models are very small, and this indicates that the slip mechanism of the Brown diffusion and thermophoresis effects are negligible in the laminar natural convection of the nanofluid. The degradation of the heat transfer with an increase of the volume fraction of the nanoparticle in the natural convection of nanofluid is due to the increase of the viscosity and the decrease of the thermal expansion coefficient and the specific heat. It is clarified in the present study that the previous controversies between the numerical and experimental studies are owing to the different definitions of the Nusselt number.
Numerical calculations of turbulent natural convection in an enclosure of the 20 kYA oil-immersed transformer model are presented. The transformer is modelled as two concentric cylinders with different heights and diameters. The thermal boundary layers are well represented in the temperature distributions along the wall of the transformer model. The flow stratification between the hot and cold walls can not be seen in the transformer model. The turbulence eddy viscosity has its maximum at the center of the core and its maximum values at the top of the core are larger than those at the bottom of the core.
Numerical analysis of the laminar natural convection in an enclosure of the 20KVA oil-immeresed transformer is presented. The core in the transformer is modelled as a rectangular cylinder and calculation is carried out for $Ra=10^3-10^6$. The correlating equation between the inner cylinder mean Nusselt numbers and Rayleigh numbers can be obtained. The conduction and convection regimes for the variation of Rayleigh numbers are well represented in the temperature distributions along the side wall of the inner cylinder. For high Rayleigh numbers, it is found that the recirculating flow in the enclosure above the inner cylinder is divided into two recirculation regions.

Two different ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}-\overline{{\nu}{\nu}}-f$ turbulence models together with the two-layer model are evaluated for natural convection in a rectangular cavity. The numerical problem and accuracy of the turbulence models are discussed. The original $\overline{{\nu}{\nu}}-f$ model suffers from the numerical stiffness problem when used with the segregate solution procedure like the SIMPLE algorithm, and a remedy for this problem is proposed. It is shown that original $\overline{{\nu}{\nu}}-f$ model best predicts the mean velocity, Reynolds stresses and the turbulent heat flux while the modified $\overline{{\nu}{\nu}}-f$ model (N=6) overpredicts the turbulent quantities.
