  • Recently, the efficiency of power transformer is improved as well as the size is becoming smaller. So, it is very important that temperature characteristics of the transformer should be estimated and predicted precisely. This paper deals with the temperature distribution of power transformer by simplified 2-D hybrid mesh model. The temperature distribution of model transformer was obtained by CFD algorithm considering natural convection. Heat sources are calculated first by magnetic field analysis based on F.E.M. and are usedas the input data for thermal field problem based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) algorithm. The calculated temperature distribution of the simplified 2-D power transformer model shows good results in accuracy as well as in computing time.

  • The containment pressure and temperature transient analysis computer code CONTEMPT4/MOD5 is modified to incorporate the passive containment cooling models. The correlations are selected from the existing experimental heat transfer correlations to model the natural and mixed convection in annular space between the containment shell and the shield building. The evaporative heat transfer of the water film on the outer shell of the containment is modeled using the correlations derived from the analogy between the heat and mass transfer. The modified code is applied to the Ap600 containment transient analysis for the model verification and the results are compared to the results of GOTHIC calculation done by Westinghouse. Also, d series of parametric sensitivity studies of heat transfer correlations, water film ratio and delay time of the wet cooling on the containment peak pressure and temperature following LOCA are performed for the containment of 1000MWe passive plant, KP1000.

  • The natural convective heat transfer in a rectangular enclosure with a heating source has been studied by experiment and numerical analysis. The governing equations were solved by a finite volume method, a SIMPLE algorithm was adopted to solve a pressure term. The parameters for the numerical study are positions and surface temperatures of a heating source i.e., Y /H =0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 11$^{\circ}C$ $\leq$ΔT$\leq$59$^{\circ}C$. The results of isotherms and velocity vectors have been represented, and the numerical results showed a good agreement with experimental values. Based on the numerical results, the mean Nusselt number of the rectangular enclosure wall could be expressed as a function of Grashof number.

  • A heating flow discharged from a 4-way ceiling type indoor unit has been investigated to determine the design parameters for the optimal flow control. The flow was measured by a PIV(particle image velocimetry) system and an experimental model of 1/10 scale with a transparent room was devised by satisfying the Archimedes number. This similarity is generally used in cases where the forced convection has similar magnitude of the natural convection. To optimize the heating flow, several vane angles and vane control algorithms of cross and right angle controls were considered. Regarding the vane angle, experimental results show that 30$^{\circ}$is an optimal angle to avoid re-suction flows without significant increase in flow noise. Temperature distribution measured in the environmental chamber ensures the increased thermal comfort when compared to the case, 60$^{\circ}$angle. At the optimal angle, applying open/close control gives rise to more uniform distribution of the heating flow than without control. Especially, the cross-control seems to be satisfactory for thermal comfort.

At the vane angle of $30^{\circ}$, applying open/close control gives nae to more uniform distribution of the heating flow than without control. • experimental and computational studies ore carried out to investigate the natural convection of the single phase flow in a tank with a heated horizontal plate facing downward. This is a simplified model for investigations of the influence of a core melt at the bottom of a reactor vessel on the thermal hydraulic behavior in a oater filled cavity surrounding the vessel. In this case the vessel is simulated by a hexahedron insulated box with a heated plate Horizontally mounted at the bottom of the box. The box with the heated plate is installed in a water filled hexahedron tank. Coolers are immersed in the U-type water volume between the box and the tank. Although the multicomponent flows exist more probably below the heated plate in reality, present study concentrates on the single phase flow in a first step prior to investigating the complicated multicomponent thermal hydraulic phenomena. In the present study, in order to get a better understanding for the natural convection characteristics below the heated plate, the velocity and temperature are measured by LDA(Laser Doppler Anemometry) and thermocouples, respectively. And How fields are visualized by taking pictures of the How region with suspended particles. The results show the occurrence of a very effective circulation of the fluid in the whole How area as the heater and coolers are put into operation. In the remote region below the heated plate the new is nearly stagnant, and a remarkable temperature stratification can be observed with very thin thermal boundary. Analytical predictions using the FLUTAN code show a reasonable matching of the measured velocity fields.

  • A three-dimensional finite element model of a 20-pin plastic dual-in-line package(PDIP) plugged into a PCE has been developed by using the finite element code ANSYS. The model has been used for thermal characterization of the package during its normal operation under natural convection cooling. Temperature distributions in the package and PCB are obtained from numerical analysis and compared with experimentally measured data. Various cases are assumed and analyzed to study the effects of package and PCB materials on thermal characteristics of PDIP with and without aluminum heatspreader. Thermal dissipation capability of PDIP is greatly increased due to copper die pad/lead frame and heatspreader. However, thermally induced stresses in the package and fatigue life of chip are improved for PDIP with Alloy 42 die pad/lead frame and no heatspreader. It is also found that the role of PCB on thermal characteristics of PDIP is very imporatant.

  • Parallel implementation is conducted for a SIMPLER finite volume model. The present parallelism is based on domain decomposition and explicit message passing using MPI and SHMEM. Two parallel solvers to tridiagonal matrix equation are employed. The implementation is verified on the Cray T3E system for a benchmark problem of natural convection in a sidewall-heated cavity. The test results illustrate good scalability of the present parallel models. Performance issues are elaborated in view of convergence as well as conventional parallel overheads and single processor performance. The effectiveness of a localized matrix solution algorithm is demonstrated.

  • Recently, the numerical analysis using person shape model for CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic) has been researched widely for the thermal comfort and inhaled air quality of human body in the indoor environments. The purpose of this research is to examine the characteristic of airflow and thermal environment around human body by the experiment of displacement ventilation that assumes the indoor environment of natural convection. In this study, thermal manikin was used instead of real human body. The Airflow characteristic around human body was measured in precision by PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry). This experimental result will be used as data for CFD benchmark test using person shape model.

  • A parallel implementation is made of a two-dimensional finite volume model based on the SIMPLER. The solution domain is decomposed into several subdomains and the solution at each subdomain is acquired by parallel use of multiple processors. Communications between processors are accomplished by using the standard MPI and the Cray-specific SHMEM. The parallelization method for the overall solution procedure to the Navier-Stokes equations is described in detail, The parallel implementation is validated on the Cray T3E system for a benchmark problem of natural convection in a sidewall-heated cavity. The parallel performance is assessed and the issues encountered in achieving a high-performance parallel model are elaborated.
