  • This study assessed the color, polyphenol content, and sensory characteristics of dressing containing varying concentrations (0, 3, 6 and 9%) of freeze-dried Natto. We determined that the absence of freeze-dried Natto (0%) imparted the highest additive value for both L and a, b. The polyphenol contents obtained were 0.63, 0.69, 0.74, and 0.82 mg/g for 0, 3, 6 and 9% of dressing containing freeze-dried Natto, respectively. The appearance, color, taste, texture, and overall preference of dressings with freeze-dried Natto showed significant differences between the samples. The overall preference was highest at 5.92 points, with dressing containing 9% Natto. The quality characteristics of the 9% added samples exhibited significantly higher values as compared to those of the controls, raising the possibility of development as a health-functional dressing.

  • Conventional methods to estimate natural frequencies and damping ratios of structures from measured response time series obtained during impact tests are reviewed. Maximum Entropy Method and Least Square Prony Method are introduced to alleviate the inherent limitation of the conventional methods. The performance of the methods are explored through computer simulation. As an example of application, they are applied to the time series obtained from an anchor drop-and-snup test of a container ship and the result is compared to that of conventional FFT method. As a result of the computer simulation, it is found that Maximum Entropy Method is very efficient to estimate natural frequencies of structures when two neighboring natural frequencies are close enough and short data records are only available, but it is not a reliable estimator for damping ratios. And it is also found that Least Square Prony Method is efficient to estimate the natural frequencies and damping ratios of highly damped structural system, but the estimation efficiency of damping ratios is significantly deteriorated in the presence of significant additive noise.

  • Recently, global facing environmental issues have been raised caused by plastic waste. Hence, increasing the demand for interest in environmentally friendly materials. In this row, research on engineering composite materials also replacing the synthetic reinforcement by introducing natural fibers. However, focus on the strength and interfacial adhesion between matrix and reinforcement is very essential in natural fiber composite, which is insufficient in the literature. There are number of approaches for improving the mechanical strength of the composites, one of the common methods is to reinforce additive nanoparticles. The present investigation, bio-additives were synthesized utilizing bio-waste, cheap, bio-degradable sea-weed powder that could replace expensive nanomaterials and reinforced into the CFRP composite through Hand lay-up followed by a vacuum process. Mechanical properties were evaluated and analyzed through microanalysis. The results concluded that synthesized additives are effective for improving mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural, impact, and shear strength. Overall, the results confirmed that the fabricated composites have potential applications in the field of engineering applications.

  • Background: Dental caries and periodontal disease are bacterial infectious disease, mainly caused by plaque, a bacterial colony deposited on the tooth surface and gum tissue. Dental plaque disclosants easily stain the dental plaque, making them effective for scaling and tooth brushing education. As the erythrosine typically contained in dental plaque disclosants is highly cytotoxic, a low toxicity additive is needed. In this study, we aimed to examine the natural pigments with negligible cytotoxicity but can effectively stain the dental plaques for use in dental plaque disclosants. Methods: The pigmentation of eight types of natural pigments was tested on bovine tongue and teeth, as well as on head and neck tissue sections of experimental ICR mice. The cytotoxicity of gingival epithelial cells was measured via MTT assay. Pigmentation was performed on the bovine tongue and tooth surface. Pigmentation in the oral environment was observed in four mandibular incisors. A 2 Tone was used as a control. Results: Of the eight types of natural pigments, purple and blue pigments were effective in coloring dental plaques on the enamel surface as well as in the head and neck tissue sections. Additionally, purple and blue pigments were visible on the surface of the bovine tongue. Red, pink, orange, green, purple, and yellow pigments showed strong cytotoxicity, whereas brown and blue pigments had relatively low cytotoxicity. Blue pigment was effective in staining the dental plaque of four mandibular incisors. Conclusion: We suggest that the blue pigment derived from Gardenia jasminoides Ellis (Rubiaceae), which is effective for coloring dental plaques and has low cytotoxicity, is useful as a naturally derived dental disclosant.

  • Nucleophilic addition reactions of benzylamines (BA; $XC_6H_4CH_2NH_2$) to ethyl-${\alpha}$-cyanocinnamates (ECC;$YC_6H_4CH$=C(CN)COOEt) have been investigated in acetonitrile at $30.0^{\circ}C$. The rate is first order with respect to BA and ECC. The rate is slower than that expected from the additive effect of ${\sigma}^-$ or $R^-$ for the activating groups (CN and COOEt). Natural. bond orbital ${\pi}^{\ast}_{c=c}$ calculations show that the contribution of COOEt group may not be fully effective despite the coplanar molecular structure. The selectivity parameters including the cross-interaction constant (${\rho}_{xy}$ = -0.22) indicate that the addition occurs in a single step. The kinetic isotope effects ($k_H/k_D$=2.5-2.8) involving deuterated BA ($XC_6H_4CH_2ND_2$) nucleophiles and activation parameters (${\Delta}H^{\neq}=4{\sim}6\;kcal\;mol^{-1};{\Delta}S^{\neq}=-45{\sim}-52\;e.u.$) suggest a cyclic transition state in which N-$C_{\alpha}$ and H-$C_{\beta}$ bonds are formed concurrently.

  • As part of our search for less toxic antimicrobial agents from natural resources. rutin was isolated from Sophora japonica and then hydrolyzed to quercetin. Antimicrobial activity of quercetin was tested in vitro against five kinds of gram positive and ten kinds of gram negative bacteria by serial broth dilution method. Among fifteen kinds of bacteria tested, the antimicrobial activity of quercetin was the most potent against Proteus vulgaris showing minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) of 125 ${\mu}$g/ml. To investigate the effect of antimicrobial combinations of quercetin with four kinds of antibiotics (ampicillin, cefazolin, oxytetracycline and chloramphenicol). the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) was determined by checkerboard assay for each strain. The antimicrobial combinations of quercetin with four kinds of antibiotics resulted in synergism in one instance, additive effect in four instances, but no antagonism was observed.

  • Adaptive algorithms based on the higher order error criterion such as the LVCMS and the LMF show performance degradation if input signal contains additive noise with a heavier-tailed density. Conventional analysis often neglects higher order terms in the recursion and my not suit for prediction exact behavior of these higher order algorithms. This paper presents a new convergence analysis which contains all the higher order term in the recursion. The analysis shows that the higher order terms, which are often neglected, dose not affect the upper bound on the step size but the misadjustment. However, the effect decreases sharply proportional to the square of the step size.

  • We previously reported on lactophoricin (LPcin), a cationic ${\alpha}-helical$ antimicrobial peptide derived from bovine milk, which has antimicrobial effects on Candida albicans as well as Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In this study, we designed the LPcin-YK3 peptide, a shorter analog of LPcin, and investigated its antimicrobial activity. This peptide, consisting of 15 amino acids with + 3 net charges, was an effective antimicrobial agent against the on the Gram-positive strain, Staphylococcus aureus (MIC: $0.62{\mu}g/ml$). In addition, the hemolytic activity assay revealed that the peptide was not toxic to mouse and human erythrocytes up to $40{\mu}g/ml$. We also used circular dichroism spectroscopy to confirm that peptide in the presence of lipid has ${\alpha}-helical$ structures and later provide an overview of the relationship between each structure and antimicrobial activity. This peptide is a member of a new class of antimicrobial agents that could potentially overcome the problem of bacterial resistance caused by overuse of conventional antibiotics. Therefore, it could be used as a therapeutic or natural additive, particularly in the cosmetics industry.

  • In epistatic grouping of uvs genes in A. nidulans based on the sensitivities to 4-NQO, the same epistatic grouping was obtained as those for UV and MMS-sensitivities. Based on the MMS-sensitivities, uvsA demonstrated synergistic interactions to uvsF and uvsH, the UvsF group genes, but exhibited epistatic interactions to uvsB and uvsC. The same epistatic grouping was also seen for uvsI when UV was irradiated after 4h germination of conidia, showing synergistic interactions to uvsH, uvsC, and uvsB. However, epistatic interactions were observed with uvsF, which were different from those obtained in quiescent conidia by UV. Intergenic and intragenic recombination frequencies were normal in uvsI compared with wild type.
