Natural gamma-decalactone (GDL) produced by biotransformation is an essential food additive with a peach-like aroma. However, the difficulty of effectively controlling the concentration of the substrate ricinoleic acid (RA) in water limits the biotransformation productivity, which is a bottleneck for industrialization. In this study, expanded vermiculite (E-V) was utilized as a carrier of RA to increase its distribution in the medium. E-V and three commonly used organic compounds were compared with respect to their effects on the biotransformation process, and the mechanism was revealed. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis indicated that RA was physically adsorbed onto the surface of and inside E-V instead of undergoing a chemical reaction, which increased the opportunity for interactions between microorganisms and the substrate. The highest concentration of GDL obtained in the medium with E-V was 6.2 g/l, which was 50% higher than that in the reference sample. In addition, the presence of E-V had no negative effect on the viability of the microorganisms. This study provides a new method for producing natural GDL through biotransformation on an industrial scale.
To information on the inheriance of heading date of rice under the short-day condition, the $F_2$ seeds obtained from all possible combinations of the diallel crosses between five leading rice varieties: Nongbaek, Tongil, Palgueng, Mangyeong and Gimmaze were grown under the short-day condition and natural condition. The days to heading were investigated and analysed for genetic components. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. Under the natural condition, the durations to heading of all combinations excluding Nong-baek x Palgueng and Nongbaek x Mangyeong were longer than those of their parents. mean. Whereas, under the short-day condition, the duration to heading of Mangyeong x Gimmaze combination was equal to that of their parents mean, and those of all other combinations were significantly shorter than those of their parents mean. 2. Under the natural condition, the non-allelic gene interactions were significant in days to heading, but under the short-day condition, the non-allelic gene interactions were not significant, and inheritance of days to heading revealed partial dominace in which additive effects were greater than dominant effects. 3. Tongil and Gimmaze were located on dominant zone under the natural day-length, and Nongbaek and Mangyeong were under the short-day condition. 4. Under the natual condition, dominant effects were greater than additive effects, and both heritabilities of the broad and the narrow senses were significantly low. Under the short-day condition, additive effects were significantly higher than dominant effects, and both heritabilities of the broad and the narrow senses were high.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of Opuntia humifusa (OPH) extracts and methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM) supplementations on the laying productivity, egg quality and sensory characteristics of eggs in hens. Six hundred forty, 35-wk-old Lohmann brown, laying hens were randomly divided into four groups: 1) water (control), 0.12% OPH extract, 0.1% MSM, and 0.12% OPH extract+0.1% MSM. They were mixed into the feed and given for 5 weeks. Egg production rates, egg weight, feed demand ratio were not significantly different among the groups. However, OPH or MSM decreased broken egg rates by increasing thickness and firmness of egg shell but they did not show the additive effects. In addition, OPH or MSM enhanced Haugh unit, an indicator of freshness of egg, and viscosity of egg white and egg yolk. OPH or MSM maintained the freshness of eggs better the control during their storage for 10 day at $4^{\circ}C$. However, OPH+MSM did not show additive effects in their freshness. Sensory test revealed that OPH or MSM decreased fishy taste and greasy flavor and they improved texture. Overall OPH or MSM enhanced the preference of eggs. In conclusion, the supplementation of either OPH or MSM enhances egg freshness and egg quality in laying hens but they should not be supplemented together due to no additive effects.
The effects of Cymbopogon citratus essential oil (Lemongrass oil) and its main component, citral (84.30%), on antibiotic-susceptible and -resistant strains of Salmonella enteritidis and S. typhimurium were assessed. C. citratus oil and citral significantly inhibited all strains of the two Salmonella species examined, with minimum inhibiting concentrations (MICs) ranging from 0.5 mg/ml to 8.0 mg/ml. The combined effects of C. citratus oil and citral (84.30%) were evaluated using a checkerboard microtiter assay. Essential oil fractions of C. citratus and citral exhibited strong synergistic or additive effects with streptomycin or kanamycin against S. typhimurium strains with fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) indices in the range of 0.28 to 1.00. In conclusion, a combination of streptomycin and lemongrass oil or its main component, citral, may be useful for reducing the minimum effective dose of antibiotic required for the treatment of resistant S. typhimurium infections.

Three solvent extraction techniques were used to recover waxy tractions from grain sorghum kernels. Yield and chemical composition of the waxy tractions obtained by reflux, bench scale (recirculated solvent), and countercurrent extraction methods were compared. Waxy traction yield from countercurrent extraction (0.200%) was significantly greater (p<0.05) than the yields of wax from both reflux (0.184%) and bench-scale (0.179%) methods. The waxy traction extracted using the bench-scale method showed the greatest relative amount of long-chained (primarily C:28 and C:30) alcohols while the countercurrent-extracted wax showed the greatest relative amount of long-chained fatty acids and fatty aldehydes. Countercurrent extraction removed a higher additive percentage of fatty aldehydes, acids, and alcohols than reflux or bench-scale extraction method.

Improvements in internal combustion engine and aftertreatment technologies are needed to meet future environmental quality goals. Plasmatron fuel converters provide a rapid response, compact means to transform a wide range of hydrocarbon fuels (including gasoline, natural gas and diesel fuel) into hydrogen-rich gas. Hydrogen-rich gas can be used as an additive to provide NOx reductions of more than 80% in diesel engine vehicles by enabling very lean operation or heavy exhaust engine recirculation. For diesel engines, use of compact plasmatron reformers to produce hydrogen-rich gas for the regeneration of NOx absorber/absorbers and particulate traps for diesel engine exhaust after-treatment could provide significant advantages. Recent tests of conversion of diesel fuel to hydrogen-rich gas using a low current plasmatron fuel converter with non-equilibrium plasma features are described.
The composition of essential oils from Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum and C. indicum were analyzed and compared. The results of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed there were distinctly different compositional patterns between C. zawadskii var. latilobum and C. indicum essential oils. The combinatorial effect of the oil of C. zawadskii var. latilobum and C. indicum, with various antibiotics was assessed against antibiotic-susceptible and -resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The essential oil fraction significantly inhibited most of the tested antibiotic-susceptible and -resistant strains of S. pneumoniae, with minimum inhibiting concentrations (MICs) ranging from 0.5 to 4.0 mg/ml. The fractional inhibiting concentration indices (FICIs) of the oils when combined with antibiotics against S. aureus and S. pneumoniae ranged from 0.26 to 0.75, and showed synergistic or additive effects.
Dietary flavonoids are currently receiving considerable attention in developing novel cancer-preventive approaches because of their potential capacities to actively induce apoptosis of cancer cells. In our previous report, a flavonoid fraction, which consisted mainly of protocatechuic acid, fustin, fisetin, sulfuretin, and butein and named RCMF (RVS chloroform-methanol fraction), was prepared from a crude acetone extract of Rhus verniciflua Stokes (RVS) that is traditionally used as food additive and herbal medicine. In this study, we evaluated the effects of the RCMF on cell proliferation and apoptosis using SV40-transformed tumorigenic hepatocytes, BNL SV A.8. Tritium uptake assay showing the proliferative capacity of the cells was strongly suppressed in the presence of RCMF. This anti-proliferative effect was further confirmed through trypan blue exclusion. RCMF-mediated suppression of cell growth was verified to be apoptotic, based on the increase in DNA fragmentation, low fluorescence intensity in nuclei after propidium iodide staining, and the appearance of DNA laddering. Collectively, this study demonstrated that RCMF can be approached as a potential agent that is capable of significantly inhibiting cell growth of hepatic cancer cells.
We determined the inhibitory activity of the essential oil fraction obtained by steam distillation from the fresh and dried leaves of Perilla frutescens var. acuta against some pathogenic Salmonella and Vibrio spp. The activities of compounds isolated from the essential oils, apiol and myristicin, were also tested and the results were compared with those of the essential oil fraction. The Perilla essential oil fraction and its main components showed significant inhibition against antibiotic-susceptive and antibiotic-resistant strains of the tested Salmonella and Vibrio strains. Synergistic or additive effects were identified by combing the oils with ampicillin by checkerboard-titer tests. We conclude that essential oils from P. frutescens can be useful in the treatment of Salmonella and Vibrio infections and as safe additives to food materials for the prevention of contamination of food by these bacteria. This is especially important because of the rapid increase in antibiotic-resistant strains, which could cause severe symptoms in humans.

Bae and W. Park [3] proved the Hyers-Ulam stability of bi-homomorphisms and bi-derivations in $C^*$-ternary algebras. It is easy to show that the definitions of bi-homomorphisms and bi-derivations, given in [3], are meaningless. So we correct the definitions of bi-homomorphisms and bi-derivations. Under the conditions in the main theorems, we can show that the related mappings must be zero. In this paper, we correct the statements and the proofs of the results, and prove the corrected theorems.
