  • Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is among the top infectious disease priorities in Korea and the leading cause of economic loss in relevant poultry industry. An understanding of the spatial epidemiology of HPAI outbreak is essential in assessing and managing the risk of the infection. Though previous studies have reported the majority of outbreaks occurred clustered in what are preferred to as densely populated poultry regions, especially in southwest coast of Korea, little is known about the spatial distribution of risk areas vulnerable to HPAI occurrence based on geographic information system (GIS). The main aim of the present study was to develop a GIS-based risk index model for defining potential high-risk areas of HPAI outbreaks and to explore spatial distribution in relative risk index for each 252 Si-Gun-Gu (administrative unit) in Korea. The risk index was derived incorporating seven GIS database associated with risk factors of HPAI in a standardized five-score scale. Scale 1 and 5 for each database represent the lowest and the highest risk of HPAI respectively. Our model showed that Jeollabuk-do, Chungcheongnam-do, Jeollanam-do and Chungcheongbuk-do regions will have the highest relative risk from HPAI. Areas with risk index value over 4.0 were Naju, Jeongeup, Anseong, Cheonan, Kochang, Iksan, Kyeongju and Kimje, indicating that Korea is at risk of HPAI introduction. Management and control of HPAI becomes difficult once the virus are established in domestic poultry populations; therefore, early detection and development of nationwide monitoring system through targeted surveillance of high-risk spots are priorities for preventing the future outbreaks.

  • The high rate of urban crime is a main issue that needs to be dealt with in this high-tech society. With the rapid increase of urban crime, research has mainly focused on topics either on a global or a local scale, such as cities or communities and houses or buildings, without reliable observational data. This study makes the best use of the nationwide surveys carried out by Korean government agencies for the analysis of urban crime patterns and factors in major Korean cities. The aims of this research are threefold: understanding the relationship between urban crime patterns and socio-economic differences in cities, determining the effect of residence types on the urban crime patterns; and uncovering potential influential factors of a crime victim's individual characteristics. The statistical methods used for the analysis of social statistical data are as follows: simple regression, logistic regression, one-way ANOVA and post-hoc test. This research found that the patterns of urban crime rate in cities have a certain tendency toward the cities' socio-economic and geographical differences. The residence type is an influential factor showing a close relation to the crime rate. Personal issues, such as the types of occupation, education, marriage, etc., are directly relevant to victims of crime.

  • The multifamily housing has various advantages in construction cost, land-use intensity. KRIHS(1997) recommended the proper scale of th multifamily housing as 800 households in constructability, 1,000 households in facility compactability, 500 households in social aspect. At the early planning stage of project, the size of the multiftmily housing has, until now, been maximizingly considered under the regulation on which has been emphasized at the building volume ratio, land area, etc., except for the expenditure during the maintenance stage. This paper aimed at providing the proper size of multifamily housing in aspect of area and household number with maintenance cost at the early stage of project. For these, it took 곧 average cost function which is made from the 3-rd quardratic form and analyzes the unit increasing rate of the average cost. It surveyed in nationwide focused on the central heating system using diesel and kerosene. The number of samples is 88 and items of management cost is 11. The results are as follows ; first, 3rd-order quadratic function is proper at explaining the cost variation, considering the multicollinearity and statistics. Second, the proper size of multifamily housing is recommended with 83,000 $m^2$ on management area, 820 or over the 2,630 household number in aspect of total management cost.

  • The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkia) originated from the North America distribute widely as invasive species throughout the world including Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and South America. The red swamp crayfish is also an invasive species in South Korea. We aimed to characterize the occurrence and distribution pattern of the red swamp crayfish, and evaluate the potential distribution of this species in South Korea. In South Korea, the red swamp crayfish was firstly reported in Seoul in 1996, and recently its occurrence is frequently reported at streams or reservoirs at different regions, showing the expansion of its distribution area. The red swamp crayfish has high potential to occur in the nationwide scale in South Korea because of their biological adaptation, effects of climate change, changes of their habitat condition, and various types of human activities. Finally, our results revealed the necessary to conduct an extensive field survey, to keep up a monitoring program for the occurrence of alien species, and to implement a strategy to prevent the dispersal of alien species in the natural ecosystems.

  • There have been a lot of reports about the effects of geomagnetically induced current(GIC) on the power grids. However there has been little domestic efforts made in this relatively urgent area which include academic research or risk assessments on GIC. There still exist a claim that domestic power grids might be in the safe state from GIC since our geomagnetic latitude is low and our power grid is relatively small scale. However it has been already demonstrated that GIC has an effect on power grids located at all latitudes. In this study, we have reviewed the transpiratory principle of the GIC, case studies of the major damage in various regions and we have calculated the GIC that can occur in domestic power grids. This paper presents some of the fundamental information about the risk assessment of domestic power grids from GIC although more thorough investigation should be made to ensure the safe operation of nationwide electric power infrastructure.

  • A habitat model was developed to delineate potential habitat of the leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) in a mountainous region of Kangwon Province, Korea. Between 1997 and 2005, 224 leopard cat presence sites were recorded in the province in the Nationwide Survey on Natural Environments. Fifty percent of the sites were used to develop a habitat model, and the remaining sites were used to test the model. Fourteen environmental variables related to topographic features, water resources, vegetation and human disturbance were quantified for 112 of the leopard cat presence sites and an equal number of randomly selected sites. Statistical analyses (e.g., t-tests, and Pearson correlation analysis) showed that elevation, ridges, plains, % water cover, distance to water source, vegetated area, deciduous forest, coniferous forest, and distance to paved road differed significantly (P < 0.01) between presence and random sites. Stepwise logistic regression was used to develop a habitat model. Landform type (e.g., ridges vs. plains) is the major topographic factor affecting leopard cat presence. The species also appears to prefer deciduous forests and areas far from paved roads. The habitat map derived from the model correctly classified 93.75% of data from an independent sample of leopard cat presence sites, and the map at a regional scale showed that the cat's habitats are highly fragmented. Protection and restoration of connectivity of critical habitats should be implemented to preserve the leopard cat in mountainous regions of Korea.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of application of the contents of Korean Information Center of Agricultura Safety and Health (KICASH) with 80 subjects(male: 60, female: 20) from different provinces nationwide in 2011. Subjects were classified according to their sex and familiarity of computer and then categorized into 3 groups with poor, medium and good by self-evaluation. The test for the effectiveness and satisfaction about KICASH was conducted with likert scale from very bad (1point) to very good (5point). Subjects generally tended to give 4 points to contents. And they gave support to KICASH in that they showed about 4 point with intention of application of KICASH for safety and health irrespective of familiarity of computer. However, as they received the information passively, it will be needed to develop more interesting and various contents which they could get more helpful information for their health and safety actively using two-way information communication system in future. Therefore the study can helps improve farmer's health and safety through developing advanced health and safety information system.
