  • In case there is a need to run the multi-year urban scale air qulaity model, it is a difficult task due to the computational demand, requiring the statistical approach for the long time atmospheric environmental assessment. In an effort to approach toward long term urban assessment, the sixteen synoptic meteorological conditions are statistically classified from the estimated geostrophic wind speeds and directions of 850 hPa geopotential height field during 2000 ~ 2005. The geostrophic wind directions are subdivided into four even intervals (north, east, south, and west), geostrophic wind speeds into two classes(${\leq}5m/s$ and >5m/s), and daily mean cloud amount into 2 classes(${\leq}5/10$ and >5/10), which result into sixteen classes of the synoptic meteorological cases for each season. The frequency distributions for each 16 synoptic meteorological case are examined and some discussions on how these synoptic classifications can be used in the environmental assessment are presented.

  • In order to design storage-based non-point source management facilities, the aspect of statistical features of the entire precipitation time series should be considered since non-point source pollutions are delivered by continuous rainfall runoffs. The 3-parameter mixed exponential probability density function instead of traditional single-parameter exponential probability density function is applied to represent the probabilistic features of long-term precipitation time series and model urban stormwater runoff. Finally, probability density functions of water quality control basin overflow are derived under two extreme intial conditions. The 31-year continuous precipitation time series recorded in Busan are analyzed to show that the 3-parameter mixed exponential probability density function gives better resolution.

  • This study is to develop a cloud detection algorit1un for COMS and it is currently tested by using MODIS level 2B and MTSAT-1R satellite radiance data. Unlike many existing cloud detection schemes which use a threshold method and traditional statistical methods, in this study a feed-forward neural network method with back-propagation algorit1un is used. MODIS level 2B products are matched with feature information of five-band MTSAT 1R image data to form the training dataset. The neural network is trained over the global region for the period of January to December in 2006 with 5 km spatial resolution. The main results show that this model is capable to detect complex cloud phenomena. And when it is applied to seasonal images, it shows reliable results to reflect seasonal characteristics except for snow cover of winter. The cloud detection by the neural network method shows 90% accuracy compared to the MODIS products.

  • This paper presents to analyze patterns from single and complex malodors using gas sensor array based on metal oxide semiconductors. The aim of research is to identify and discriminate single malodors such as $NH_3$, $CH_3SH$ and $H_2S$ and their mixtures according to concentration levels. Measurement system for analyzing patterns from malodors is constructed by an array of metal oxide semiconductor sensors which are available commercially together with associate electronics. The patterns from sensory system are analyzed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) which is simple statistical pattern recognition technique. Throughout the experimental trails, we confirmed the experimental procedure for measurement system such as sensors calibration time and gas flow rate, and discriminated malodors using pattern analysis technique.

  • Contractor's opportunistic bidding behavior refers to contractor's deliberate low-bid, which cannot accord with the cost, and expectation for beyond-contractual reward (BCR), the compensation earned through cutting corners or claims after undertaking the construction project. This research applies System Dynamics to develop a model of contractor's pricing with consideration for dimensions of "cost", "market competition", and "BCR". Iterative computer simulations were performed to analyze the effects of contractor's pricing on the market price. The results were then examined by statistical analysis on data collected from 44 highway projects in Taiwan. It is found that the critical force driving the contractors to bid opportunistically is their excessive expectations in BCR under the current environment. Within the price competition mechanism, if the problem of BCR exists, even if the bidding system is further improved, contractors would still prefer opportunistic bidding behavior, and eventually make the whole construction industry operate ineffectively. Therefore, it is crucial to remedy the aforementioned BCR problem by more effective management policy.

  • The purposes of this study lie on understanding characteristic water-rock interaction mechanisms of groundwater in the Geochang, Hapcheon, and Changryeong areas and establishing correlation between geological factors and groundwater chemistry by statistical tools. Based on the statistical results from the relationship between rock types and groundwater chemistry, fluorine is correlated with Fe and Al in the diorite area, whereas it is correlated with Cl and $NO_3-N$ in the andesite area. Hardness, total solids, and $SO_4$ show that they are closely related to each other in all rock types, especially with highest relationship in sedimentary rocks. Although it is generally acknowledged that TDS increases with depths of aquifer due to the long term water-rock interaction, no remarkable relationship between well depth and water chemistry is found in this study. It appears that hydrogeological system in the study area may be complex or the path of water-rock interaction is inconsistent with well depth.

  • A batch Process has a multi-way data structure that consists of batch-time-variable axis, so the statistical modeling of a batch process is a difficult and challenging issue to the process engineers. In this study, We applied a statistical process control technique to the general batch process data, and implemented a fault-detection and Statistical process control system that was able to detect, identify and diagnose the fault. Semiconductor etch process and semi-batch styrene-butadiene rubber process data are used to case study. Before the modeling, we pre-processed the data using the multi-way unfolding technique to decompose the data structure. Multivariate regression techniques like support vector regression and partial least squares were used to identify the relation between the process variables and process condition. Finally, we constructed the root mean squared error chart and variable contribution chart to diagnose the faults.

  • The evaluation of the effluent water quality of sewage treatment plant is one of the most important factor in calculating total maximum daily loads (TMDLs). Current method to calculate 95% upper limit of effluent water quality of sewage treatment plant assuming normal distribution of data needs to be implemented in case of non-normal distribution. We have investigated the applicability of percentile ranking method as a non-parametric statistical analysis in case of non-normal distribution of data.

  • Statement of problem. There have been few studies about the marginal fit of Auro Galvano Crowns. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to compare the marginal fit of the anterior single restorations. Material and methods. The in vitro marginal discrepancies of metal-ceramic, Auro Galvano Crown and coping were evaluated and compared. The Auro Gavano Crowns were made from one extracted maxillary central incisor prepared by milling machine. 30crowns per each system were fabricated. Measurements of a crown were recorded at 50 points that were randomly selected for marginal gap evaluation. Parametric statistical analysis was performed for the results. Results. Mean marginal gap dimensions and standard deviations at the marginal opening for the anterior single crowns were $74{\pm}21{\mu}m$ for the control (metal-ceramic restoration), $45{\pm}11{\mu}m$ for Auro Galvano Crown coping, and $51{\pm}9{\mu}m$ for the Auro Galvano Crown. Conclusions. Auro Calvano Crown showed significantly smaller (P<.05) marginal gap than the control. Ceramic application did not significantly affected the marginal fit of Auro Galvano Crown. (P>.05)

  • In this study, a uroflowmetry system was developed to detect a voiding symptom conveniently at home or hospital. A implemented hardware was composed of mechanism and system circuit part, the software was developed to process uroflow data, graph display, extraction of parameter, and evaluation of congregate rate so as to analysis obtaining uroflow data. The following experiment was performed to evaluate an ability of classification and fitness. The curve pattern of uroflow was classified into each symptom. Various parameters were calculated in the curve pattern of each uroflow as follows. The parameters are MFR, AFR, VOL, VT, and FT. A significant difference among parameters was examined by a statistical analysis for extracted parameters between normal and abnormal experimental group. The uroflow data with the various symptom was divided into normal and abnormal group using fuzzy classifier. The result of the fuzzy classification using MFR and AFR was superior by 91.23 % than grouping evaluation including VOL.
