The growing interest towards ultra-wideband (UWB) communications stems from its unique features such as baseband operation, ample multipath diversity, and the potential of enhanced user capacity. But since UWB has to overlay existing narrowband systems, multiple access has to be achieved in the presence of narrowband interference (NBI). However, existing baseband spreading codes for UWB multiple access are not flexible in handling NBI. In this paper, we introduce two novel spreading codes that not only enable baseband UWB multiple access, but also facilitate flexible NBI cancellation. We construct our codes using a single carrier or multiple carriers (SC or MC), which can be implemented with standard discrete-cosine transform (DCT) circuits. With our SC/MC codes, NBI can be avoided by simply nulling undesired digital carriers. Being digital, these SC/MC codes give rise to multiband UWB systems, without invoking analog carriers. In addition, our SC/MC codes enable full multipath diversity, and maximum coding gains. Equally attractive is their capability to reduce the number of interfering users, with simple matched filter operations. Comprehensive simulations are also carried out to corroborate our analysis.

The capacity of ultra-wideband (UWB) systems in presence of narrowband interference (NBI) is studied. By appropriately modifying the Shannon capacity formula, an analytical expression for the capacity of M-ary pulse position modulation (PPM) signals in the presence of NBI is obtained. Performance evaluation results for the capacity of such signals as a function of the NBI carrier frequency and power are also presented.

Interference can seriously degrade the performance of GPS receiver because GPS signal has extremely low power at earth surface. This paper presents a Narrowband Interference Excision Filter (NIEF) in frequency domain that removes narrowband interferences with small signal loss. A NIEF transforms the received GPS signals with interferences into the frequency domain with FFT and then compute statistics such as mean and standard deviation to determine an excision threshold. All spectrums exceeding the threshold are removed and the remaining spectrums are restored by IFFT. A NIEF effectively can remove various and strong interferences with a simple structure. However, the signal power loss is unavoidable during FFT and IFFT. Besides the hamming window and overlap technique, a threshold-whitening technique and an adaptive detection threshold are adopted to effectively reduce the signal power loss. The performance of implemented NIEF is evaluated using real signals obtained by 12 bit GPS signal acquisition board. The output of NIEF is fed into the Software Defined Receiver to evaluate the acquisition and tracking performance. Experimental results shows that many types of interference such as single-tone CWI, AM, FM, swept CWI and multi-tones CWI are effectively mitigated with small signal power loss.

The goal of this paper is to analyze, through simulations and experiments, GNSS interference mitigation performance under various types of antenna structures against wideband and narrowband interferences using spatial-temporal adaptive signal processing (STAP) techniques. The STAP approach, which combines spatial and temporal processing, is a viable means of GNSS array signal processing that enhancing the desired signal quality and providing protection against interference. In this paper, we consider four types of 3D antenna array structure - Uniform Linear Array (ULA), Uniform Rectangular Array (URA), Uniform Circular Array (UCA), and the Single-Ring Cylindrical Array (SRCA) under an interference environment. Analytical evaluation and simulations are performed to investigate the system performance. This is followed by simulation GPS orbits in interfered environment are used to evaluate the STAP performance. Furthermore, experiments using a 2x2 URA hardware simulator data show that with the removal of wideband and narrowband interference through the STAP techniques, the signal tracking performance can be enhanced.
In this paper, a improved whitening filter for narrowband interference rejetion in PN spread spectrum communication systems is proposed. This whitening filter has the feedback from the output to the input of adaptive transversal filter and is superior to conventional LMS whitening filter in respect to SNR and power spectrum since the calculation of tap weight is based on maximum likelihood estimation
The coexistence among different systems is a major problem in communications. Mutual interference between different systems should be analyzed and mitigated before their deployment. The paper focuses on two aspects that have an impact on the system performance. First, the coexistence analysis, i.e. evaluating the mutual interference. Second aspect is the coexistence techniques, i.e. appropriate system modifications that guarantee the simultaneous use of the spectrum by different technologies. In particular, the coexistence problem is analyzed between ultra-wide bandwidth (UWB) and narrow bandwidth (NB) systems emphasizing the role of spectrum sensing to identify and classify the NB interferers that mostly affect the performance of UWB system. A direct sequence (DS)-time hopping (TH) code design technique is used to mitigate the identified NB interference. Due to the severe effect of Narrowband Interference on UWB communications, we propose an UWB transceiver that utilizes spectrum-sensing techniques together with mitigation techniques. The proposed transceiver improves both the UWB and NB systems performance by adaptively reducing the mutual interference. Detection and avoidance method is used where spectrum is sensed every time duration to detect the NB interferer's frequency location and power avoiding it's effect by using the appropriate mitigation technique. Two scenarios are presented to identify, classify, and mitigate NB interferers.

Narrowband interference can severely degrade the performance of GPS receivers. Detecting the presence of interference and then characterizing it can lead to its removal. Receivers can be reconfigured to focus on other signals or satellites that are less vulnerable to that interference at that moment. Using hardware reconfigurability of FPGA receivers and characterizing the effect of narrowband interference on the GNSS signal quality lead us to a new RFI mitigation technique in which the highest quality and less vulnerable signal can be chosen at each moment. In the previous work [1], the post processing capability of a software GPS receiver, has been used to detect and characterize the CW interference. This is achieved by passing the GPS signal and the interference through the correlator. Then, using the conventional definition of C/No as the squared mean of the correlator output divided by its variance, the actual C/No for each satellite is calculated. In this work, first the 'Exclusion zone' for each satellite signal has been defined and then by using some experiments the effects of different parameters like signal power, jamming power and the environmental noise power on the Exclusion zone have been analyzed. By monitoring the Doppler frequency of each satellite and using the actual C/No of each satellite using the traditional definition of C/No and actual data from a software GPS receiver, the decision to reconfigure the receiver to other signal can be made.
In this paper, we present narrowband interference (NBI) cancelling algorithm applied to wideband spread spectrum system. We introduce multi-carrier transmission technique to overcome hardware inplementation difficulty of wideband spreading above 40MHz and to enhance NBI performance. A direct-sequence spread spectrum receiver using both decision-feedback and two sided LMS filters for combating narrowband interference is applied. We show that performance of this receiver outperforms conventional NBI rejection systems in tone jamming, partial band jamming, and impulsive channel through the bit error ratio evaluation. In addition, we propose a new technique to improve the performance of time domain NBI rejection algorithm sensitive to impulsive channel.
This paper presents the GPS receiver's inherent interference effectiveness based on the receiver's internal processing gain. This research is to verify the weakness of the GPS satellite signals and evaluate the receiver's vulnerability in an interference situation. The experiment for the narrow band interference effectiveness for the L1 C/A code GPS receiver has been performed by using the Spirent GSS4765 jamming simulator. After analyzing the experimental result, it is compared with the calculated J/S value of the two different L1 C/A code GPS receivers. By the above result, the narrowband jamming effectiveness of the each jamming source and the jamming margin for the each receiver are to be analyzed in detail. Finally, we could utilize the result to analyze the jamming effectiveness on the GNSS receiver.
