These experiments were carried out to define the rest period of mulberry by treating growth regulators in Taegu, Korea. Results obtained were as follows: It was recognized that the depth of rest in Taegu, Korea, was not deeper than that in Tokyo and Kagoshima, Japan. The rest of mulberry was begun at the end of September, subsequently became deeper through the first October into the late October and then turned gradually into quiescence by the beginning of November. Buds sprayed by gibberellic acid ($GA_3$) 10ppm and urea 0.5% were promoted to sprout, while naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) 0.02% inhibited strongly bud sprouting and abscisic acid (ABA) 20ppm had no effect on the rest of mulberry. Gibberellic acid 10ppm enhanced the rate of green color of bud after incubation for 10 days at $30^{\circ}C$. By the portion of mulberry stems, the depth of rest was different that the middle buds were less dormant than those lower. The optimal time required for the mulberry winter bud break is 15 days incubation at $30^{\circ}C$ as treated with $GA_3$.
The main purpose of this study includes investigation of the rheological properties of fresh self consolidating cement paste containing chemical and mineral additives using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model. In order to develop the model, 200 different mixes are cast in the laboratory as a part of an extensive experimental research program. The data used in the ANN model are arranged in a format of fourteen input parameters covering water-binder ratio, four different mineral additives (calcium carbonate, metakaolin, silica fume, and limestone), five different superplasticizers based on the poly carboxylate and naphthalene and four different Viscosity Modified Admixtures (VMAs). Two common output parameters including the mini slump value and flow cone time are chosen for measuring the rheological properties of fresh self consolidating cement paste. Having validated the model, the influence of effective parameters on the rheological properties of fresh self consolidating cement paste is investigated based on the ANN model outputs. The output results of the model are then compared with the results of previous studies performed by other researchers. Ultimately, the analysis of the model outputs determines the optimal percentage of additives which has a strong influence on the rheological properties of fresh self consolidating cement paste. The proposed ANN model shows that metakaolin and silica fume affect the rheological properties in the same manner. In addition, for providing the suitable rheological properties, the ANN model introduces the optimal percentage of metakaolin, silica fume, calcium carbonate and limestone as 15, 15, 20 and 20% by cement weight, respectively.
The enhanced slag fineness and the batch water of low water-to-cement ratio(W/C) were employed in order to improve the early strength of blast-furnace slag blended cement at low temperature. A grinding aid was used to grind the blast-furnace slag into the fineness of 6,280$\textrm{cm}^2$/g (Blaine), and this fine slag was then homogeneously mixed with the ordinary Portland cement to produce the blast-furnace slag blended cement containing 40% slag by weight composition. On the other hand, the batch water could be reduced from W/C=0.50 (KS L 5105) to W/C=0.33 through a commercial, naphthalene type superplasticizer. Through the method mentioned above, the early strength of the blast-furnace slag blended cement at low temperature could be enhanced even somewhat higher than the Portland cement strength. And the microsturcture of the cement was studied by both the pore structure analysis and the A.C. impedance measurement.

The present study investigates convective heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics inside a cooling passage of rotating gas-turbine blades. The rotating duct has staggered ribs with $70^{\circ}$ attack angle, which are attached on leading and trailing surfaces. Naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine detailed local heat transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy. Additional numerical calculations are conducted to analyze the flow patterns in the cooling passage. The present experiments employ two-surface heating conditions in the rotating duct because the exposed surfaces to hot gas stream are pressure and suction side surfaces in the middle passages of an actual gas-turbine blade. Secondary flows are generated by Coriolis and centrifugal forces in the spanwise and streamwise directions. The ribs attached on the walls disturb the mainflow resulting in recirculation and secondary flows near the ribbed wall. The local heat transfer and flow patterns in the passage are changed significantly according to rib configurations and duct rotation speeds. Therefore, the geometry and arrangement of the ribs are important for the advantageous cooling performance. The experimental results show that the ribs enhance the heat transfer more than $70\%$ from that of the smooth duct. The duct rotation generates the heat transfer discrepancy between the leading and trailing walls due to the secondary flows induced by the Coriolis force. The overal heat transfer pattern on the leading and trailing walls for the first and second passes are depended on the rotating speed, but the local heat transfer trend is affected mainly by the rib arrangements.

In flight particulate matter particularly emissions generated by incomplete combustion processes has become a subject of global concern due to the health problems and environmental impacts associated with them. This has compelled most countries to set standards for coarse and fine particles due to their conspicuous impacts on environment and public health. This contribution therefore explores forest fire emissions and how its particulates affects air quality, damage to vegetation, water bodies and biological functions as architects for lung diseases and other degenerative illnesses such as oxidative stress and aging. Soot was collected from simulated forest fire using a clean glass surface and carefully transferred into amber vials for analysis. Volatile components of soot were collected over 10 mL dichloromethane and analyzed using a QTOF Premier-Water Corp Liquid Chromatography hyphenated to a mass selective detector (MSD), and Gas Chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer (GC-MS). To characterize the size and surface morphology of soot, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used. The characterization of molecular volatiles from simulated forest fire emissions revealed long chain compounds including octadec-9-enoic acid, octadec-6-enoic acid, cyclotetracosane, cyclotetradecane, and a few aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene and naphthalene). Special classes of organics (dibenzo-p-dioxin and 2H-benzopyran) were also detected as minor products. Dibenzo-p-dioxin for instance in chlorinated form is one of the deadliest environmental organic toxins. The average particulate size of emissions using SEM was found to be $11.51{\pm}4.91{\mu}m$. This study has shown that most of the emissions from simulated forest fire fall within $PM_{10}$ particulate size. The molecular by-products of forest fire and particulate emissions may be toxic to both human and natural ecosystems, and are possible precursors for various respiratory ailments and cancers. The burning of a forest by natural disasters or man-made fires results in the destruction of natural habitats and serious air pollution.
The present study investigates convective heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics inside the cooling passage of the gas-turbine blades. It is important to increase not only the heat transfer rates but also the uniformity of heat transfer in the cooling passage. The square duct has compound-angled ribs with $60^{\circ},\;70^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ attack angles, which are installed on the test plate surfaces. a naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy. The ribs disturb the main flow resulting in the recirculation and secondary flows near the ribbed wall and the vertices near the side-wall. The local heat transfer and the secondary flow in the duct are changed largely according to the rib orientation. Therefore, geometry and arrangement of the ribs are important fur the advantageous cooling performance. The angled ribs increase the heat transfer discrepancy between the wall and center regions because of the interaction of the secondary flows. The average heat/mass transfer coefficient and pressure drop of the ribs with the $60^{\circ}$$-90^{\circ}$ compound-angle are higher than those with the $60^{\circ}$ attack angle. Also, the thermal efficiency of the compound-angled rib is higher than that with the $60^{\circ}$ attack angle. The uniformity of heat/mass transfer coefficient on the cross ribs may is higher than that on the parallel ribs array.
Enteropeptidase is a serine protease secreted by the pancreas and converts inactive trypsinogen to active trypsin. Enteropeptidase cleaves the C-terminal end of the substrate recognition sequence Asp-Asp-Asp-Asp-Lys ($D_4K$). The assay for enteropeptidase has utilized $GD_4K$-conjugated 2-naphthylamine ($GD_4K$-NA) as a fluorogenic probe over the last 30 years. However, no other $D_4K$-conjugated fluorogenic substrates of enteropeptidase have been reported. Furthermore, naphthalene is known as carcinogenic to humans. In this study, we used shift in the emission spectrum of $GD_4K$-conjugated 7-amino-4-methylcoumarin ($GD_4K$-AMC) as a fluorogenic method to measure enteropeptidase activity. The kinetic analysis revealed that enteropeptidase has a $K_M$ of 0.025 mM and a $k_{cat}$ of 65 $sec^{-1}$ for $GD_4K$-AMC, whereas it has a $K_M$ of 0.5 to 0.6 mM and a $k_{cat}$ of 25 $sec^{-1}$ for $GD_4K$-NA. The optimum pH of $GD_4K$-AMC hydrolysis was pH 8.0. Our data indicate that $GD_4K$-AMC is more suitable as a substrate for enteropeptidase than $GD_4K$-NA.
Presently, we report a simple, reproducible and high frequency plant regeneration in Hibiscus syriacus L. using axillary buds. H. syriacus was regenerated from axillary buds directly or through a callus phase. Regenerated shoots were directly induced from young and fresh axillary buds cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) supplemented with 0.01 mg/L of the growth regulator thidiazuron (TDZ) after 2 weeks of culture. Directly induced shoots were transferred to hormone-free MS medium and root development was observed after 6 weeks. On the other hand, old and stale axillary buds were regenerated to shoots via callus induction on MS medium containing 0.01–2 mg/L TDZ after 4 weeks. A TDZ concentration of 0.01 mg/L was most effective in callus formation. Green callus was transferred to MS medium containing 0.01 mg/L α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and 0.5 mg/L benzylaminopurine (BA). After 4 weeks, callus had developed into multiple shoots. Plantlets were formed from 10 week cultures of single shoots on hormone-free MS medium. Regenerated plantlets were cultured on MS medium for one month and then transferred to pots containing garden soil. Potted plants were acclimatized for one month and grown to maturity under greenhouse conditions. The present study has shown that various concentrations of plant growth regulator can be effective for in vitro plant regeneration of H. syriacus. The direct and indirect regeneration protocol presented here will be useful for understanding the manipulation and propagation of H. syriacus.
To examine the photosensitized biomolecules damaging activity, dimethoxyP(V)tetrakis(2-naphthyl)porphyrin (NP) and dimethoxyP(V)tetraphenylporphyrin (PP) were synthesized. The naphthyl moiety of NP hardly deactivated the photoexcited P(V)porphyrin ring in ethanol. In aqueous solution, the naphthyl moiety showed the quenching effect on the photoexcited porphyrin ring, possibly through electron transfer and self-quenching by a molecular association. Binding interaction between human serum albumin (HSA), a water soluble protein, and these porphyrins could be confirmed by the absorption spectral change. The apparent association constant of NP was larger than that of PP. It is explained by that more hydrophobic NP can easily bind into the hydrophobic pockets of HSA. The photoexcited PP effectively induced damage of the tryptophan residue of HSA, through electron transfer-mediated oxidation and singlet oxygen generation. NP also induced HSA damage during photo-irradiation and the contributions of the electron transfer and singlet oxygen mechanisms were speculated. The electron transfer-mediated mechanism to the photosensitized protein damage should be advantageous for photodynamic therapy in hypoxic condition. The quantum yield of the HSA photodamage by PP was significantly larger than that of NP. The quenching effect of the naphthyl moiety is considered to suppress the photosensitized protein damage. In conclusion, the naphthalene substitution to the P(V)porphyrins can enhance the binding interaction with hydrophobic biomacromolecules such as protein, however, this substitution may reduce the photodynamic effect of P(V)porphyrin ring in aqueous media.

The present study has been conducted to investigate the effect of discrete ribs and rotation on heat/mass transfer characteristics in a two-pass square duct with $90^{\circ}-rib$ turbulators. The rib turbulator has a square cross section of 1.5 mm. The rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio $({e/D_{h})$ is 0.056, and the rib pitch-to-rib height ratio (p/e) is 10. The gap width is the same as the rib height. The rotation number ranges from 0.0 to 0.2 while Reynolds number is fixed to 10,000. In a stationary duct, the heat/mass transfer on the surfaces with discrete ribs is enhanced because the gap flow promotes local turbulence and flow mixing near the ribbed surface. In a rotating duct, the gap flow affects differently the heat/mass transfer on leading and trailing surfaces with discrete ribs. On the leading surface of the first pass, heat/mass transfer is increased due to the gap flow. On the trailing surface of the first pass, however, heat/mass transfer is decreased because the gap flow disturbs reattachment of main flow. The phenomenon, that is, the difference of heat transfer between the leading and the trailing surfaces is distinctly presented by rotation.
