  • This paper reports the microstructures and thermal conductivities of $ZrB_2$-SiC composite ceramics with size and amount of SiC. We fabricated sintered bodies of $ZrB_2$-x vol.% SiC (x=10, 20, 30) with submicron and nanosized SiC densified by spark plasma sintering. Microstructure retained the initial powder size of especially SiC, except the agglomeration of nanosized SiC. For sintered bodies, thermal conductivities were examined. The observed thermal conductivity values are 40~60 W/mK, which is slightly lower than the reported values. The relation between microstructural parameter and thermal conductivity was also discussed.

  • The effects of carbon-coated silicon/graphite (Si/Gr.) composite anode on the electrochemical properties were investigated. The nanosized silicon particle shows a good cycling performance with a reasonable value of the first reversible capacity as compared with microsized silicon particle. The carbon-coated silicon/graphite composite powders have been prepared by pyrolysis method under argon/10 wt% propylene gas flow at $700{^{\circ}C}$ for 7 h. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis indicates that the carbon layer thickness of 5 nm was coated uniformly onto the surface silicon powder. It is confirmed that the insertion of lithium ions change the crystalline silicon phase into the amorphous phase by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The carbon-coated composite silicon/graphite anode shows excellent cycling performance with a reversible value of 700 mAh/g. The superior electrochemical characteristics are attributed to the enhanced electronic conductivity and low volume change of silicon powder during cycling by carbon coating.

  • Electrochemical synthesis was employed to prepare a novel hydroxyapatite/graphene (HAP/Gr) composite powder suitable for medical applications as a hard tissue implant (scaffold). The synthesis was performed in a homogeneous dispersion containing Na2H2EDTA·2H2O, NaH2PO4 and CaCl2 with a Ca/EDTA/PO43− concentration ratio of 0.25/0.25/0.15M, along with 0.01 wt% added graphene nanosheets, at a current density of 137 mA cm−2 and pH value of 9.0. The field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observations of the composite HAP/Gr powder indicated that nanosized hydroxyapatite particles were uniformly placed in the graphene overlay. Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction confirmed graphene incorporation in the HAP/Gr powder. The electrochemically prepared HAP/Gr composite powder exhibited slight antibacterial effect against the growth of the bacterial strain Staphylococcus aureus.

  • The loess on the Chinese loess plateau is not only the accumulation of Asian dust but also the source materials of Hwangsa. The eolian carbonates of the loess were dissolved and reprecipitated to form secondary pedogenic carbonates by the post-depositional weathering during the interglacial time. Mineralogical analysis shows that the secondary calcites are composed mostly of a nanosized fibrous calcite with rather constant width ($30{\sim}50nm$) and highly variable length. The nano calcite is the major authigenic mineral, which occurs as the fine-grained matrix of the loess and paleosol. The nano calcite was recently reported in the Hwangsa, where it was originated from the source regions of Chinese loess plateau.

  • Silica hybrid silver nanoparticles showing the strong antimicrobial activity, in which nano-silver is bound to silica molecules, has been synthesized using ${\gamma}-irradiation$ at room temperature. The present study relates to an antimicrobial composition for coating fiber products comprising silica hybrid silver nanoparticles. In this study, we describe antimicrobial fiber products coated with the silica hybrid silver nanoparticles and a method of antimicrobially treating fiber products by coating the fiber products with the silica hybrid silver nanoparticles. The antimicrobial fiber products exhibited excellent antimicrobial effects. In detailed practice, when the present composition comprising nanosized silica-silver was applied to a cloth (fabric) in a concentration of $6.4mg\;yard^{-1}$, the viable cell number decreased to less than 10 cells before and after laundering, resulting in a reduction of 99.9% or greater in the viable cell number. The present composition displays long-lasting potent disinfecting effects on bacteria. Also, we investigated the toxicity of silica hybrid silver nanoparticles in rats. The skin of rats was treated with a 30 ppm nanoparticles solution ($2ml\;Kg^{-1}$) for 8 days. No toxicity was detected in the treatment. These results suggest that the fiber products coated with the silica hybrid silver nanoparticles can be used to inhibit the growth of various microorganisms.

  • Layered nanocomposite, SiO2/TiO2 sol pillared clay, has been prepared by the ion exchange reaction of Na' ion in montmorillonite with positively charged mixed SiO2/TiO2 sol. The nanosized sol particles were synthesized by mixing SiO2 sol solution with TiO2 one, which is obtained by acidic hydrolysis of TEOS and TiCl4, respectively. From powder XRD, the basal spacing (d001) of the sample calcined at 400 ℃ was found to be ca. 60 Å, due to the multistacking of nanosized SiO2 and TiO2 sol particles, which was confirmed by the pore size analysis from 129Xe NMR and micropore analysis calculated from nitrogen adsorption. The BET specific surface area shows the value of 684 m2g-1 (Langmuir 1115 m2g-1), which is the highest among various pillared clays ever reported previously, and the total porosity is found to be 0.51 mlg-1, and the pores are mainly composed of micropore with a size of ca. 11.8 Å. This result agrees with the adsorption capacity obtained from water adsorption. According to diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, it is found that the TiO2 particles stabilized in the interlayer space of montmorillonite are quantum-sized of ca. 20 Å.

  • Nanosized polystyrene (PS) particles with the narrow size distribution were synthesized from styrene monomer at the presence of the surfactant (polyvinylpyrrolidone, PVP), the solvent of 95 % alcohol, and the initiator of benzoyl peroxide (BPO). Since the emulsion polymerization method was applied, many factors could have effects on the size of PS particles during polymeric process. Aside from the concentration of monomer, surfactant and initiator, the factors such as the stirring speed and the ultrasonic radiation were mainly studied. By adjusting the radiating time, PS particles with their size of about 400 nm were synthesized.

  • Titania nanoparticles were prepared by controlled hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) in water-in-oil (W/O) and microemulsion stabilized with a nonionic surfactant, N P-10 (Polyoxyethylene Nonylphenol Ether: $C_9H_{19}C_6H_4(OCH_2CH_2)_{10}OH$)). The nanosized particles prepared in W/O microemulsion were characterized by FT-IR, TEM, XRD, TGA, and DTA. In addition, the photocatalytic degradation of p-nitrophenol has been studied by using a batch reactor in the presence of UV light in order to compare the photocatalytic activity of prepared nanosized titania. The nanaosized titania particles calcined at $300{\sim}600^{\circ}C$ showed an anatase structure, but it transformed to a rutile phase above $700^{\circ}C$ of calacination temperature. With an increase of $W_o$ ratio, the crystallite size increased but photocalytic activity decreased. The titania synthesized at $W_o=5$, R = 2, and calcined at $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ showed the highest activity on the photocatalytic degradation of p-nitrophenol.

  • Extensive research efforts are directed toward the development of highly sensitive gas sensors using novel nanostructured materials. Among the different strategies for producing sensor devices based on nanosized building blocks, polymeric fiber templating approach which is combined by chemical and physical synthesis routes was attracted much attention. This unique morphology increases the surface area and reduces the interfacial area between film and substrate. Consequently, the surface activity is markedly enhanced while deleterious interfacial effects between film and substrate are significantly reduced. Both effects are highly advantageous for gas sensing applications. In this presentation, facile synthesis of hollow and porous metal oxide nanostructures and their applications in chemical sensors will be discussed.
