  • To synthesize $Gd_{2}O_{3}:Eu$ phosphor powder of nano size and high luminescence efficiency under UV (ultraviolet) and VUV (vacuum ultraviolet) light, organic additives such as citric acid and ethylene glycol and $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ flux were introduced in large-scale spray pyrolysis and critical conditions for forming nano-sized particles were investigated. The $Gd_{2}O_{3}:Eu$ phosphor particles prepared from solutions with organic additives such as citric acid and ethylene glycol had micron size and spherical shape. However, the particles prepared from polymeric precursor solution with $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ flux had nano size and non-aggregation characteristics. The as-prepared spherical particles with micron size turned into nano-sized particles during post-treatment by recrystallization process. The nano-sized $Gd_{2}O_{3}:Eu$ phosphor particles showed higher brightness than the commercial $Y_2O_3:Eu$ phosphor product under both UV light of 254nm and VUV light of 147 nm.

  • Nano-Sized TiO$_2$ particles with diameter between 2 and 5 nm are synthesized in Water/Triton X-100/n-Hexane microemulsion. Particles show the amorphous structure and partially hydroxide form. The optical absorbance of particles appears at 250nm and band edge at 340nm. Gold metal is deposited on the surface of TiO$_2$ particles by reduction reaction of Au(III) ion with sodium hypophosphite. The size of gold-deposited particles is 20nm, and the optical absorbance appears at 270nm and at 550nm. So particles show the red color. The dense precipitation is formed by aggregation in the TiO$_2$ nano-sized particles of about 5nm size. But the bulky precipitation is formed by agglomeration phenomena in the gold-deposited particles of 20nm size. And also gold-deposited particles is easily dispersed by being re-dispersed in PEG/Water solution. This study has compared those things measuring the SPF characteristics of the cosmetics made of the synthesized particles. If the particle size is controlled appropriately, then the SPF value will be higher, or more colorless cosmetics will be made.

  • $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles with nano-sized and non-aggregation characteristics were prepared by spray pyrolysis using the spray solution containing polymeric precursor and $Li_2$$CO_3$ flux material. Nano-sized $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles had higher brightness than the commercial $Y_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles. The $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles had nano-size and non-aggregation characteristics after heat-treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ when the addition amount of $Li_2$$CO_3$ flux was 1 wt.% and 3 wt.%. The mean size of particles were 200 nm and 400 nm when the amount of flux was 1 wt.% and 3 wt.%, respectively. The prepared phosphor particles had higher photoluminescence intensity than that of the commercial product regardless of the content of$ Li_2$$CO_3$ flux and had the maximum brightness when the content of flux was 5 wt %. The photoluminescence intensity of the nano-sized $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles containing 3 wt.% $Li_2$$CO_3$ flux was 125% in comparison with that of the micron-sized $Y_2$$O_3$:Eu commercial product.

  • Nano-sized iron particles were synthesized by reduction of $Fe^{3+}$ in aqueous solution under two reaction conditions, aerobic and anaerobic, and the reactivity of iron was tested by reaction with trichloroethene (TCE) using a batch system. Results showed that iron produced under anoxic condition for both synthesis and drying steps gave rise to iron with higher reduction reactivity, indicating the presence of oxygen is not favorable for production of nano-sized iron deemed to accomplish reactivity enhancement from particle sized reduction. Nano-sized iron sample obtained from the anoxic synthesis condition was further characterized using various instrumental measurements to identity particle morphology, composition, surface area, and particle size distribution. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image showed that synthesized particles were uniform, spherical particles (< 100 nm), and aggregated into various chain structures. The effects of other synthesis conditions such as solution pH, initial $Fe^{3+}$ concentration, and reductant injection rate on the reactivity of nano-sized iron, along with standardization of the synthesis protocol, are presented in the companion paper.

  • Explosion characteristics of micro-sized aluminum dusts had been studied by many researchers, but the research of nano-sized aluminum dusts were very insufficient. In this study, an experimental investigation was carried out on the influences of nano and micro-sized aluminum dusts (70 nm, 100 nm, $6{\mu}m$, $15{\mu}m$) on dust explosion properties of aluminum particles by using 20 L explosion apparatus. With decreasing of particle size in suspended aluminum dusts, the LEC (lower explosion concentration) of nano-sized aluminum is lower than that of micro-sized aluminum. The particle size change of nano-sized aluminum dusts seems no obvious explosion differences than that of micro-sized aluminum dusts. From the observation of nano-sized aluminum particles by TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), it is estimated that increase of particles aggregation may have effects on the explosion characteristics of aluminum nanopowders.

  • Oragnic/inorganic hybrid materials prepared by sol-gel method have rapidly become a fasci nating research field in materials science. In this study, Polyimide/$\textrm{TiO}_2$ composites were synthesized from nano-sized anatase $\textrm{TiO}_2$ and two types of Polyimide (BTDA-PPD, PMDA-ODA) by Sol-gel method. Nano-sized $\textrm{TiO}_2$ particles were prepared from $\textrm{TiOEt}_4$ solution. The composites were charcaterized by using XRD, TGA, IR, TEM, and Atomic Force Microscope(AFM). $\textrm{TiO}_2$ nano particles were dispersed well in polyimide matrix and the thermal stability of polyimide was improved with $\textrm{TiO}_2$ nano-sized particles.

  • In this study, the dispersion stability of nano-sized CeO2 particles, synthesized by hydrothermal method in aqueous was evaluated from observing the surface potential behavior of CeO2 particle synthesized by solid state reaction. The isoelectric point(IEP) of nano-sized CeO2 synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis was found to be pH 9 contrary to the isoelectric point of micro-sized CeO2 synthesized by solid state reaction at pH 6.7. IEP was shifted to pH 2.0 as the addition of D-3019 from 0.1 to 1.0 wt%. The surface potential of CeO2 particles synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis was reduced as the addition of B-1001 used as a binder without change of IEP because the absorption of B-1001 polymer on the CeO2 particles shifted the shear plane of CeO2 particles outward away from the surface. This surface potential behavior was well correlated with the dispersion stability of slurry.

  • The removal of tiny particles adhered to surfaces is one of the crucial prerequisite for a further increase in IC fabrication, large area displays and for the process in nanotechnology. Various cleaning techniques (wet chemical cleaning, scrubbing, pressurized jets and ultrasonic processes) currently used to clean critical surfaces are limited to removal of micrometer-sized particles. Therefore the removal of sub-micron sized particles from silicon wafers is of great interest. For this purpose various cleaning methods are currently under investigation. In this paper, we report on experiments on the cleaning effect of 100nm sized fluorescence particles on silicon wafer using the plasma shockwave occurred by femtosecond laser. The plasma shockwave is main effect of femtosecond laser cleaning to remove particles. The removal efficiency was dependent on the gap distance between laser focus and surface but in some case surface was damaged by excessive laser intensity. These experiments demonstrate the feasibility of femtosecond laser cleaning using 100nm size fluorescence particles on wafer.

  • The NaA zeolite particles were dispersed in a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix to prepare a composite membrane. The nano sized zeolite particles of NaA were synthesized in the laboratory and the mean size was approximately 60 nm. Pervaporation characteristics such as a permeation flux and a separation factor were investigated using the membrane as a function of the feed concentration from 0.01 to 0.05 mole fraction and the weight % of NaA particles between 0 wt% and 5 wt% in the membrane. Also, the micro sized particles of $5{\mu}m$ were dispersed in the membrane for a comparison purpose. When the ethanol concentration in the feed solution was 0.01 mole fraction, the flux of water significantly increased from $600g/m^2/hr$ to $2000g/m^2/hr$ as the content of the nano NaA particles in the membrane increased from 0 wt% to 5 wt%, while the NaA particles improved the separation factor from 1.5 to 7.9. When the flux of water through the membrane containing nano sized particles was roughly 15% increased compared to the micro sized particles, whereas the separation factor of water was found to be approximately 5% increased. It can be said that the role of the nano sized NaA particles is quite important since both the flux and the separation factor are strongly affected.

  • In recent days, there is much interest in the biocidal activity of silver since silver is known to be safe and effective as disinfectant and biocidal material against coliforms and viruses. In particular, nano silted silver particles which can be used as effective biocidal material received more attention. Accordingly, it is important to investigate antimicrobial activity and mechanism of nano sized silver particles prepared in a cost-effective manner. In this study, nano sized silver particles were prepared via photoreduction of a silver salt ($AgNO_3$) in the bulk phase of $PEO_{20}-PPO_{70}-PEO_{20}$ (Pluronic 123) block copolymer The antimicrobial efficacy of silver nano particles against E. coli was investigated and compared with that of silver ion as the concentration of silver nano particles, pH ($5.6{\sim}8.2$), temperature ($4^{\circ}C{\sim}35^{\circ}C$) varied in aqueous system. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to examine the nature of damaged microorganism with nano sized silver particles and silver ion. This study showed that antimicrobial efficacy of silver nano particles was approximately one twentieth than that of silver ion. It was more biocidal at higher pH in contrast with silver ion. In addition, nano silver particles was demonstrated to disrupt the outer membrane of E. coli, subsequently causing their aggregation. On the other hand, silver ion diffused into the cell damaging the cytoplasmic membrane without disrupting the outer membrane of E. coli.
