  • High-aspect-ratio nano-hair or nano-pillar arrays have great potential in a variety of applications. In this study, we present a simple and cost-effective replication method of high-aspect-ratio polymer nano-hair arrays. Highly ordered nano-porous AAO (anodic aluminum oxide) template was utilized as a reusable nano-mold insert. The AAO nano-mold insert fabricated by the two-step anodization process in this study had close- packed straight nano-pores, which enabled us to replicate densely arranged nano-hairs. The diameter, depth and pore spacing of the nano-pores in the fabricated AAO nano-mold insert were about 200nm, $1{\mu}m$ and 450nm, respectively. For the replication of polymer nano-hair arrays, a UV nano embossing process was applied as a mass production method. The UV nano embossing machine was developed by our group for the purpose of replicating nano-structures by means of non-transparent nano-mold inserts. Densely arranged high-aspect-ratio nano-hair arrays have been successfully manufactured by means of the UV nano embossing process with the AAO nano-mold insert under the optimum processing condition.

  • Spherical porous silica supports modified with titanium or zirconium alkoxides were prepared, and allyl groups were chemically attached to the titanized or zirconized silica supports, and the product was cross-polymerized with a double bond containing cellulose derivative to yield new CSPs (chiral stationary phases). Magic angle spinning 13C solid state NMR and elemental analysis were used to characterize the CSPs. The performances of the chiral stationary phases were examined in comparison with a conventional chiral stationary phase. Spherical porous silica particles modified with 3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate of cellulose were prepared and used as the conventional chiral stationary phase. Chromatographic data were collected for a few pairs of enantionmers in heptane/2-propanol mixed solvents of various compositions with the three chiral columns and the results were comparatively studied. The separation performance of the chrial phase made of the titanized silica was better than the others, and the separation performance of the chiral phase of the zirconized silica was comparable to that of the conventional chiral phase. The superiority of titanized silica over bare or zirconized silica in chiral separation seemed to be owing to the better yield of crosslinking (monitored by increase of carbon load) for titanized silica than for the others.

  • Porous anodic alumina has been used widely for corrosion protection of aluminum surfaces or as dielectric material in micro-electronics applications. It exhibits a homogeneous morphology of parallel pores which can easily be controlled between 10 and 400nm. It has been applied as a template for fabrication of the nanometer-scale composite. In this study, mechanical properties of the AAO structures are measured by the nano indentation method. Nano indentation technique is one of the most effective methods to measure the mechanical properties of nano-structures. Basically, hardness and elastic modulus can be obtained by the nano-indentation. Using the nano-indentation method, we investigated the mechanical properties of the AAO structure with different size of nano-holes. In results, we find the hole effect that changes the mechanical properties as size of nano hole.

  • In this paper, the deflection and buckling analyses of porous nano-composite piezoelectric plate reinforced by carbon nanotube (CNT) are studied. The equations of equilibrium using energy method are derived from principle of minimum total potential energy. In the research, the non-local strain gradient theory is employed to consider size dependent effect for porous nanocomposite piezoelectric plate. The effects of material length scale parameter, Eringen's nonlocal parameter, porosity coefficient and aspect ratio on the deflection and critical buckling load are investigated. The results indicate that the effect of porosity coefficient on the increase of the deflection and critical buckling load is greatly higher than the other parameters effect, and size effect including nonlocal parameter and the material length scale parameter have a lower effect on the deflection increase with respect to the porosity coefficient, respectively and vice versa for critical buckling load. Porous nanocomposites are used in various engineering fields such as aerospace, medical industries and water refinery.

  • Polycaprolactone (PCL) is a synthetic biodegradable polymer with excellent mechanical properties. $TiO_2$ (titanium dioxide) has a hydrophilic, high density and excellent biocompatibility. In this work, we produced three-dimensional porous scaffolds with PCL and $TiO_2$ nanoparticles using a salt-leaching method. Physical properties of the scaffolds were analyzed by FE-SEM, FTIR, TGA and compressive strength. Interestingly, the addition of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles decreased the water absorption and swelling ratio of the porous scaffolds. However, the compressive strength was increased by $TiO_2$. CCK-8 assay, which is generally used for the analysis of cell growth, shows that $TiO_2$ nanoparticles have no cytotoxicity. Taken together, we suggest that the PLC/$TiO_2$-scaffold can be used for biomedical applications.

  • We prepared the highly ordered nano-wires of polypyrrole, polyaniline conductive polymers and polypyrrole/ polyaniline conductive copolymers by templating the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) porous membrane, in which pore diameter was 20 nm, 100 nm and 200 nm. Those conductive polymers were grown from pore inner surface of AAO membrane forming hollow tubes and then wire structures were formed after 3 hour polymerization. By removing AAO membrane templates using sodium hydroxide solution, the conductive polymer nano-wires were successfully obtained, of which diameter and length were close to the ones of nano-pores in AAO membrane template. Crystallinity and thermal stability of the conductive polymer nano-wires were higher than irregular ones that prepared by solution polymerization. Furthermore, the electrical resistance of conductive polymer nano-wires were reduced by about 4~60% compared with that of the irregular polymers prepared by solution polymerization.

  • In order to fabricate the porous $Al_2O_3$ with dispersion of nano-sized Cu particles, freeze-drying of camphene/$Al_2O_3$ slurry and solution chemistry process using Cu-nitrate are introduced. Camphene slurries with 10 vol% $Al_2O_3$ was frozen at $-25^{\circ}C$. Pores were generated by sublimation of the camphene during drying in air. The sintered samples at 1400 and $1500^{\circ}C$ showed the same size of large pores which were aligned parallel to the sublimable vehicles growth direction. However, the size of fine pores in the internal walls of large pores decreased with increase in sintering temperature. It was shown that Cu particles with the size of 100 nm were homogeneously dispersed on the surfaces of the large pores. Antibacterial test using fungus revealed that the porous $Al_2O_3$/1 vol% Cu composite showed antifungal property due to the dispersion of Cu particles. The results are suggested that the porous composites with required pore characteristics and functional property can be fabricated by freeze-drying process and addition of functional nano particles by chemical method.

  • In this study, the free and forced vibration analysis of micro sandwich plate with porous core layer and magneto-electric face sheets based on modified couple stress theory and first order shear deformation theory under simply supported boundary conditions is illustrated. It is noted that the core layer is composed from balsa wood and also piezo magneto-electric facesheets are made of BiTiO3-CoFe2O4. Using Hamilton's principle, the equations of motion for micro sandwich plate are obtained. Also, the Navier's method for simply support boundary condition is used to solve these equations. The effects of applied voltage, magnetic field, length to width ratio, thickness of porous to micro plate thickness ratio, type of porous, coefficient of porous on the frequency ratio are investigated. The numerical results indicate that with increasing of the porous coefficient, the non-dimensional frequency increases. Also, with an increase in the electric potential, the non-dimensional frequency decreases, while and with increasing of the magnetic potential is vice versa.

  • In this study, the anionic exchange membranes were prepared through the impregnation of polyethylenimine (PEI) into porous polyethylene (PE) separator and then crosslinking with isophrhaloyl dichloride (IPC). To characterize the resulting membranes, the contact angles, FT-IR, ion exchnage capacity and ion conductivity were measured. The amide group is produced the reaction between amines in PEI and -COCl in IPC. In case of ion exchange capacity, 1.96 meq./g dry membrane at the reaction time, 30 sec was decreased to 1.14 meq./g dry membrane at 600 sec reaction time. The ion conductivity, $9.15{\times}10^{-2}S/cm$ at 30 sec reaction time, was obtained.

  • During spray coating, especially in an air plasma spray (APS), pores, cracks, and splat boundaries are developed and those factors exert influence on thermomechanical properties such as elastic modulus, thermal conductivity, and coefficient of thermal expansion. Moreover, the thermo mechanical properties are crucial elements to determine the thermoelastic characteristics, for instance, temperature distribution, displacements, and stresses. Two types of thermal barrier coating (TBC) model, the dense and porous microstructures, are taken into account for the analysis of microstructural characterizations. $TriplexPro^{TM}$-200 system was applied to prepare TBC samples, and the METECO 204 C-NS powder is adopted for the relatively porous microstructure and METECO 204 NS powder for the dense microstructure in the top coat of TBCs. Governing partial differential equations were derived based on the thermoelastic theory and approximate estimates for the thermoelastic characteristics were obtained using a finite volume method for the governing equations.
