  • A new method of estimating axial nail force is proposed. An instrumented soil nail wall is selected to investigate the effectiveness of the new proposed method. The new method includes effect of creep and age of cement grout surrounding the steel bar, The new method also considers cracks in the grout generated during and after the end of the wall construction. It is found from this study that a reduced grout stiffness due to creep with age and crack of the grout must be considered for estimating correct axial nail forces. The reduced grout stiffness is considered also providing significant part of axial nail load compared to that of steel bar.

  • Trace elements compose a very small portion of the body, however they have a variety of essential functions. Various diseases are caused by trace element deficiencies, and sometimes they can be fatal. Long-term TPN is a risk factor of trace element deficiency, and trace elements need to be checked regularly while receiving TPN. It is important to provide sufficient requirements of trace elements regarding the clinical features and the problems of trace element excess or deficiency. Moreover extensive studies to establish the efficiency of examining human hair and nails, recent method to determine the trace elements, are required.

  • Acromegaloid Facial Appearance syndrome is a very rare syndrome combining acromegaloid-like facial appearance, thickened lips and oral mucosa and acral enlargement. Progressive facial dysmorphism is characterized by a coarse facies, a long bulbous nose, high-arched eyebrows, and thickening of the lips, oral mucosa leading to exaggerated rugae and frenula, furrowed tongue and narrow palpebral fissures. We report a case of acromegaloid facial appearance syndrome in a 19-year-old male patient who presented with all the characteristic features of the syndrome along with previously unreported anomalies like dystrophic nails, postaxial polydactyly and incisal notching of teeth.

  • The mycobiota of 160 hair and nail samples collected from 4 different governorates in upper Egypt were estimated using soil plate method for isolating keratinophilic and dermatophytic fungi. Twenty-three fungi were recorded on both hair and nail samples collected from the four governorates. Highest fungal diversity (20) was collected from Red Sea samples followed by Qena (18) and Aswan (17) while lowest fungal diversity was recorded from Sohage samples. The common genera were Aphanoascus, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Paecilomyces and Chrysosporium. The most prevalent species belonging to these genera were: A. fulvescens, Aphanoascus sp. A. flavus link, A. flavus var. columnaris, P. chrysogenium. P. lilacinus and C. sulfureum. True dermatophytes such as Nannizzia fulva appeared in $20{\sim}30%$ of the male samples.

  • In this study, the modification structure design of insulation displacement connector developed was considered for simplification of assembly process. The modified connector consisted terminal, wafer and fitting nails. The separation behavior under locking condition for pitch 1.25mm wire to board connector was measured and the apparatus for the test was made. The maximum restraining force was measured about 4.5kgf that was bigger value than the specification limit. And the pulling force of a wire was also indicated about 2.3kgf.

  • Ellis-van Creveld syndrome is a rare congenital genetic disorder having autosomal recessive inheritance. It is a syndrome affecting the Amish population of Pennsylvania in USA with prevalence rate of 1/5,000 live at birth. In non-Amish population, the birth prevalence is 7/1,000,000. The syndrome is characterized by bilateral postaxial polydactyly of the hands, chondrodysplasia of long bones resulting in acromesomelic dwarfism, ectodermal dysplasia affecting nails as well as teeth and congenital heart malformation. There were very rare reports of this syndrome in dentistry. The present case focuses on the striking and constant oral findings of these patients, which are the main diagnostic features of this syndrome. Since the oral manifestations affect the esthetic, speech, and jaw growth of the child, the dentists have an important role to play in proper management of such case.

  • This research is an experimental work of investigating the behavior of soil nailing system under surcharges whereas most of them were concentrated on evaluating its capacity under selfweight of excavated ground. Model tests in laboratory were performed to investigate the ultimate bearing capacity of soil nailing system under surcharges in forms of strip loading. Tests were carried out to find parameters controlling its capacity such as length of nail, vertical and horizontal spacings between nails, inclination of nail installation, and loading position of surcharges. Failure mechanism of forming failure line due to surcharge to soil nailing system was also observed by using dyed sand and monitoring its behavior. From results of these test, effects of parameters was analyzed qualitatively. Thus, this experimental results could provide meaningful data to analyze and design this system later.

  • A numerical approach to simulate the behaviour of timber shear walls under both static and dynamic loading is proposed. Because the behaviour of timber shear walls hinges on the behaviour of the nail connections, the force-displacement behaviour of sheathing-to-framing nail connections are first determined and then used to define the hysteretic properties of finite elements representing these connections. The model nails are subsequently implemented into model walls. The model walls are verified using experimental results for both monotonic and cyclic loading. It is demonstrated that the complex hysteretic behaviour of timber shear walls can be reasonably represented using model shear walls in which nonlinear material failure is concentrated only at the sheathing-to-framing nail connections.

  • Purpose: As the number of total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) increases, the incidence of femoral periprosthetic fractures after TKA is also increasing. This review aimed to suggest a new surgically oriented classification system for femoral periprosthetic fractures. Methods: We investigated the classifications, and current treatment trends for femoral periprosthetic fractures after TKA by means of a thorough review of the relevant literature. Results: Numerous studies reported good results of surgical treatment with modern fixatives including locking compression plates and retrograde intramedullary nails. However, few classifications of femoral periprosthetic fractures reflect the recent developments in surgical treatment. Conclusions: We recommend that surgical management be considered the first-line treatment for femoral periprosthetic fractures after TKA. Our new classification will help in deciding the surgical treatment option for femoral periprosthetic fractures after TKA.
