  • 이 연구의 목적은 한국 전통문양을 커뮤니케이션의 기본단위로 상정하기 위해 이들이 지니는 기호학적 의의를 고찰하고, 이미지를(Image) 중심으로 분류하여 전통문양의 현대화 작업에 기여하기 위함이다. 상기 목적을 달성하기 위해 본 연구팀은 한국전통문양의 이미지 기호학적 고찰을 시도하고, 이에 근거한 분류 모형을 제시할 것이다.

  • Myth is defined as hidden rules or practices in a particular group universally represented in the overall society. The implied meanings in the myth is the result of reflection of culture, and the understanding of the reflection seeps into the society, making cycle structure. In many mythological stories, an act of looking has broad meanings. For example, in the story of Orpheus, Medusa and Tiresias, the act of looking brought about misfortune. The implication of these stories is that it pushes 'what should be not done' rather than 'what should be done', highlighting taboos across the society. This study seeks to present a case of image analysis by interpreting the image of current commercials through the relationship between looking back and taboos among acts of looking in mythological stories.

  • In this study, I would like to review how our ancestors understood and used caves for which purposes, and also to research the good use of caves as residential area, myths and tales, proverbs and civilian religions through folk customs' approach to caves. in pre-historic age, I understood that the caves was used for residential area and for food life by various archeological data. I could review the meaning of caves through Dangoon myth and deeply comprehend the caves, as every cave has it's own tales related with mysterious world. Caves are spotlighting as proverbs related with unknown world, and the caves as prayer place and mental training place, and also as foods warehouse, military facility, and play space I.E sightseeing place from a viewpoint of modern living folk customs.

A Study on Design and Construction of Anap Pond with a Comparative Study of Ancient Palace Ponds in Korea, China and Japan (한.중.일 고대 원지 비교 분석을 통한 안압지 조영계획의 연구)

  • The purpose of this article is to study the design and construction of Anap pond with a comparative study of ancient palace ponds in Korea, China and Japan. Anap pond was excavated in 1975-6 and is the oldest orignal pond to be found among Koran garden sites. Anap pond was made just before Shilla drove out Tang, after Shilla ruined Paekjae and Koguryo with the Tang army. This was a time Shilla enjoyed a multi-cultural situation due to interaction with Paekjae and Koguryo refugees, as well as information provided by the ambassadors sent to Tang who were well aquainted with Tang culture. Anap pond shows the influence of not only the indigenous mountain-god myth, but also the theoretical background common among Korea, China and Japan. But it also depicts the special form of space inbued with the exquisite aesthetic taste of Shilla people, which started with Anap pond hardened in Gaen temple, and which bloomed in Sukgulam. Scenery structure analysis gives a supposition of the center building on the western coatland, and sequential analysis gives the feeling of being at sea, analysised by root square shape analysis, equal ratio square shape and golden section, sow we can see the planned space organization by speculated planning. Thus, Anap pond is a garden of Shilla in which the cultural exchange has been inculturated and made our own, and the special aesthetic taste embodied.

  • The paper starts off with a notion that the most realistic problem in restoring cultural contents' archetype and developing contents industry based on it is the lack of understanding and production about key visual. Thus, with the premise that, in visualizing ancient fantasy as an original archetype subject material, one has to take into account design process for an actual content production, the paper aims for the suggestion of the necessity of key visual through visualization. For this, the paper made an artwork of archetype image based on literature and historical data with which to visualize fantasy elements of Goguryeo's ancient myth and tales that have high utilization value as various subject matters, such as animation and games.

Benjaminian Ruskin: Redemptive Myth and Modernity

  • The Queen of the Air, John Ruskin-s highly elliptical publication of 1869, elaborates a complex mythology as a way of responding to the prevalence of scientific thinking, widespread environmental degradation, the pernicious effects of political economy, and mechanistic labor. Benjamin-s desire to rescue human experience from prevailing scientific conceptions is reminiscent of Ruskin-s fear that the peculiar power that shapes the unities of the natural world is simultaneously being "beaten down by the philosophers into a metal or evolved by them into a gas" and obscured by the dreams and theories of philosophers and theologians. As a critic remarks, in Benjamin-s-and, we would add, Ruskin-s-view, "what the modern era lacked was a basis for continuity which would prevent experience from disintegrating into a desultory and meaningless series of events." Despite its frenetic hyper-associativity, then, The Queen of the Air contains a key element that Benjamin believes is necessary for "redemption": the desire for a new form of consciousness that recognizes links to the past and thus to the longings and dreams of our forebears. Thus, although Ruskin most immediately influences Proust, who in turn influences Benjamin, Benjamin-s thought is far more Ruskinian than critics have heretofore observed. Just as Benjamin helps us make sense of the ways in which The Queen of the Air is caught in the grip of the shocking associativity of modern life, so Ruskin assists us in discerning similar impulses in Benjamin-s attraction to a form of archaic consciousness that can, by altering the modern form of perception, reenchant the present.

The Healing-Solidarity in Gaines's A Lesson Before Dying (게인즈의 『죽음 앞의 깨달음』에 나타난 치유하는 연대)

  • Gaines depicts the process of transformation of a black young who accepts his execution with dignity in A Lesson Before Dying. There two personas of the protagonist, Jefferson, appear in this novel. The former seen in the black and white community is the persona of falsehood and submission, and the latter appeared in the black community is the true persona. The former, the pig persona in black-and-white community is created, forced onto them by whites and the human persona in the black community is made by their own standards without being forced. Jefferson has been depersonalized by his pig persona. He implements their false persona by mimicking pigs to confront its reality. And then he retrospects the pleasure of relationship throughout his own life. Grant's expensive gift, the radio, becomes a trigger to realize the significance of his existence and the social solidarity. Moreover, many black visitors look at him with expectant eyes of fulfilling their historical burden. After all, Jefferson is executed as a human being with dignity, and the transformation of Jefferson from a pig to a human is getting rid of the white values and standing on the black values. In other words, it is the procedure of creating the new myth out of the false myth, from meaningless life to meaningful death.
