Many algorithms to find a minimum cost design of water distribution network (WDN) have been developed during the last decades. Most of them have tried to optimize cost only while satisfying other constraining conditions. For this, a certain degree of simplification is required in their calculation process which inevitably limits the real application of the algorithms, especially, to large networks. In this paper, an optimum design method using the Genetic Algorithms (GA) is developed which is designed to increase the applicability, especially for the real world large WDN. The increased to applicability is due to the inherent characteristics of GA consisting of selection, reproduction, crossover and mutation. Just for illustration, the GA method is applied to find an optimal solution of the New York City water supply tunnel. For the calculation, the parameter of population size and generation number is fixed to 100 and the probability of crossover is 0.7, the probability of mutation is 0.01. The yielded optimal design is found to be superior to the least cost design obtained from the Linear Program method by $4.276 million.
Genetic algorithm is an efficient search method using principles of natural selection and population genetics. In conventional genetic algorithms, however, the size of gene pool should be increased to insure a convergency. Therefore, many memory spaces and much computation time were needed. Also, since child chromosomes were generated by chromosome crossover and gene mutation, the algorithms have a complex structure. Thus, in this paper, a compact stereo matching algorithm using a population-based incremental teaming based on probability vector is proposed to reduce these problems. The PBIL method is modified for matching environment. Since the Proposed algorithm uses a probability vector and eliminates gene pool, chromosome crossover, and gene mutation, the matching algorithm is simple and the computation load is considerably reduced. Even if the characteristics of images are changed, stable outputs are obtained without the modification of the matching algorithm.

Differential evolution (DE) algorithm is presented and applied to global optimization in this research. DE suggested initially fur the solution to Chebychev polynomial fitting problem is similar to genetic algorithm(GA) including crossover, mutation and selection process. However, differential evolution algorithm is simpler than GA because it uses a vector concept in populating process. And DE turns out to be converged faster than CA, since it employs the difference information as pseudo-sensitivity In this paper, a trial vector and its control parameters of DE are examined and unconstrained optimization problems of highly nonlinear multimodal functions are demonstrated. To illustrate the efficiency of DE, convergence rates and robustness of global optimization algorithms are compared with those of simple GA.
Genetic algorithms based on the theory of natural selection, have been applied to many different fields, and have proven to be relatively robust means to search for global optimum and handle discontinuous or even discrete data. Genetic algorithms are widely used for unconstrained optimization problems. However, their application to constrained optimization problems remains unsettled. The most prevalent technique for coping with infeasible solutions is to penalize a population member for constraint violation. But, the weighting of a penalty for a particular problem constraint is usually determined in the heuristic way. Therefore this paper proposes, the effective technique for handling constraints, the ranking penalty method and hybrid genetic algorithms. And this paper proposes dynamic mutation tate to maintain the diversity in population. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is tested on several test problems and results are discussed.

This paper presented the real-time self-tuning learning control based on evolutionary computation, which proves its superiority in finding of the optimal solution at the off-line learning method. Background: Tobacco contains agents which generate various potent DNA adducts that can cause gene mutations. Production of DNA adducts may be neutralized by glutathione S transferase (GST) along with other phase I and phase II enzyme systems. The existence of null type of GST among the population increases the susceptibility to various disorders and diseases. The present study focuses on the impact of high tobacco usage and possible null type mutation in GST loci. Methods: Genotypes of GST were detected by multiplex polymerase chain reaction in unrelated 504 volunteers of high tobacco using natives of Gujarat. Allelic frequencies were calculated using Statistical Package for Social Studies-16 software. Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) was calculated using Chi square test. Two sided Fisher's significance test was used to compare allelic frequencies of different populations. Results: The frequency of homozygous null genotype of GSTM1 and GSTT1 were 20% (95% CI 16.7-23.9) and 35.5% (95% CI 31.4-39.9) respectively. The GSTM1 and GSTT1 null allele frequency distribution in the Gujarat population was significantly deviating from HWE. GSTT1 null frequency of Gujaratians was significantly higher and different to all reported low tobacco using Indian ethnics, while GSTM1 was not differing significantly. Conclusion: Tobacco usage significantly influences the rate of mutation and frequency of GSTT1 and M1 null types among the habituates. The rate of mutation in GSTT1 loci was an undeviating response to the dose of tobacco usage among the population. This mutational impact of tobacco on GSTT1 postulates the possible gene - environment interaction and selection of null genotype among the subjects to prone them under susceptible status for various cancers and even worst to cure the population with GSTT1 dependent drugs.

The recessive white (locus c) phenotype observed in chickens is associated with three alleles (recessive white c, albino ca, and red-eyed white cre) and causative mutations in the tyrosinase (TYR) gene. The recessive white mutation (c) inhibits the transcription of TYR exon 5 due to a retroviral sequence insertion in intron 4. In this study, we genotyped and sequenced the insertion in TYR intron 4 to identify the mutation causing the unusual white plumage of Yeonsan Ogye chickens, which normally have black plumage. The white chickens had a homozygous recessive white genotype that matched the sequence of the recessive white type, and the inserted sequence exhibited 98% identity with the avian leukosis virus ev-1 sequence. In comparison, brindle and normal chickens had the homozygous color genotype, and their sequences were the same as the wild-type sequence, indicating that this phenotype is derived from other mutation(s). In conclusion, white chickens have a recessive white mutation allele. Since the size of the sample used in this study was limited, further research through securing additional samples to perform validation studies is necessary. Therefore, after validation studies, a selection system for conserving the phenotypic characteristics and genetic diversity of the population could be established if additional studies to elucidate specific phenotype-related genes in Yeonsan Ogye are performed.
Many misconceptions regarding biology and evolution have been reported by students prior to being exposed to a formal education program of evolution which challenged them. This study sought to investigate and to analyze the misconception formation process of evolution originating from TV animation and science books for children. Firstly, to identify TV animation's influence on students' misconceptions of evolution, a questionnaire including TV animation characters was constructed and administered to 146 elementary school students, 161 middle school students, and 156 high school students. The data collected was analyzed. Secondly, 17 science books for children were sampled and the contents related to evolution were selected and analyzed in terms of five evolutionary explanations: creationism internal will explanation, teleological explanations, explanations of use and disuse, mutation and finally, natural selection. Children have understood 'growth' and 'metamorphosis' on TV animation as 'evolution'. The processes by which characters on TV animation undergo some forms of change, which are in fact a kind of metamorphosis has often been understood as 'evolution'. Many respondents have defined evolution incorrectly as the process of growing and changing shape. On the other hand, some science books fur children contained descriptions of evolution including' mutation and finally natural selection explanation'; however, most of the science books fur children sampled in this study were written through the perspectives of alternative evolutionary views such as 'teleology view', 'internal will view', and 'use and disuse view'. It is apparent that TV animation and science books fur children influence the formation of various misconceptions regarding evolution by children.
We investigated the selection and sensitivity to environmental mutagen of silkworm reared artificial diet to develop all-year-round operation system using a specific locus mutation of Bombyx mori. In the system, mutagenicity could be detected by the egg colour manifested by the pe and/or re genes, which is a kind of recessive visible mutation of the insect. Among, hi, Backokjam, C5, and N12, varieties of silkworm, AT was higher than other varieties in eclosion rate of female, and C5 and N12 were higher in fertility of male. Bakokjam was higher in eclosion rate of female, rate of moth to lay eggs normally in female and male, no. of eggs layed in female and fertility of female. As above results, Bakokjam was finally selected as the most fitness one among varieties of silkworm reared artificial diet. But the sensitivity to mutagen was lower than other varieties. In the sensitivity to mutagen, AT was the most sensitivity to mutagen in tested varieties of silkworm. To use AT variety in this system, AT was improved major characteristics, eclosion rate, fertility, rate of moth to lay eggs normally, and so on, by crossing of other varieties including Bakokjam.
