Ecological influences of indigenous freshwater bivalve Unio douglasiae on the water quality and epilithic diatom community was examined with artificial stream (AST), which constructed in a laboratory daily receiving the eutrophic lake water. For the colonization of new periphyton community, forty commercial slide glasses were deposited as a substrate into the lowest part of each AST. Prior to 1 week, the AST was operated to induce the freely-colonization of the algal community in the absence of mussels. After the mussels was introduced at 435 indiv. $m^{-2}$ between step 1 and step 5, the passed water and substrates were daily collected to analysis the change of water quality and lotic and lentic algae abundance for 10 days. Compared to the control, turbidity (60.0% of control), suspended solids (62.5%), and chlorophyll-$\alpha$ (72.2%) in mussel-passed waters were decreased significantly, while a strong increase of ammonia (up to 800% of control) was companied with the decrease of dissolved oxygen (19.5% of control) and total phosphorus (23.9%), respectively. On average, the concentrations of suspended solids (67.0% of control) and chlorophyll-$\alpha$ (89.4%) in mussel-treated substrates were remarkably increased, however algal abundance in its water simultaneously decreased. These results indicate that incidentally or purposely mussel introductions can decrease organic matter of the stream and increase transparency of stream water, however, mussel-mediated nutrient and pseudofeces release may stimulate the adverse growth of periphyton or phytoplankton community in the lower stream or reservoir.

A novel or canal-type continuous removal of organic matter (C-CROM) with combined freshwater bivalves (Unio douglasiae and Anodonta woodiana) was developed to improve the water quality (IWQ) of eutrophic reservoirs. The first experiment was performed for 12 days to measure the IWQ using 256 individuals of combined bivalves (ca. 7:3), at the same density that distributed in the collection stream. The second experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of IWQ with the addition of each 30% of two mussels for 14 days. Results indicated that a novel C-CROM significantly decreased suspended solids, chlorophyll-$\alpha$, transparency, total nitrogen and phosphorus, and increased ammonium and biodeposition (t-test, P<0.001 for all), while other dissolved inorganic nutrients such as $NO_2$, $NO_3$, and SRP did not change (t-test, P>0.5). Daily IWQ performances of C-CROM with combined mussels was about two times higher to the previous studies using single species where less suspended inorganic nutrients were released except for ammonia. Collectively, a C-CROM is more strategic to the water quality improvement of eutrophic lake.
Mussels are major fouling organisms causing serious technical and economic problems. In this study, antifouling activity towards mussel was found in three compounds isolated from a marine bacterium associated with the sea anemone Haliplanella sp. This bacterial strain, called PE2, was identified as Vibrio alginolyticus using morphology, biochemical tests, and phylogenetic analysis based on sequences of 16S rRNA and four housekeeping genes (rpoD, gyrB, rctB, and toxR). Three small-molecule compounds (indole, 3-formylindole, and cyclo (Pro-Leu)) were purified from the ethyl acetate extract of V. alginolyticus PE2 using column chromatography techniques. They all significantly inhibited byssal thread production of the green mussel Perna viridis, with $EC_{50}$ values of $24.45{\mu}g/ml$ for indole, $50.07{\mu}g/ml$ for 3-formylindole, and $49.24{\mu}g/ml$ for cyclo (Pro-Leu). Previous research on the antifouling activity of metabolites from marine bacteria towards mussels is scarce. Indole, 3-formylindole and cyclo (Pro-Leu) also exhibited antifouling activity against settlement of the barnacle Balanus albicostatus ($EC_{50}$ values of 8.84, 0.43, and $11.35{\mu}g/ml$, respectively) and the marine bacterium Pseudomonas sp. ($EC_{50}$ values of 42.68, 69.68, and $39.05{\mu}g/ml$, respectively). These results suggested that the three compounds are potentially useful for environmentally friendly mussel control and/or the development of new antifouling additives that are effective against several biofoulers.
The results of this work concerning the growth of the mussel, Mytilus edulis cultured by the hanging method in Koje Bay are as follows: The major spawning time is confined to the period from March to April. The mean growth of the mussel is indicated by the following formula; $$Y\;=\;1.508+0.659X-0.0559X^{2}+0.00367X^3$$ The major growing seasons are June and October The variance varied in proportion to the growth of the mussel, and each ranged, in shell height, from $1.25\~2.75\;to\;2.25\~4.25$ (mean:1.60 to 2.78)cm, $2.25\~5.25(3.00)cm,\;2.25\~7.75(4.83)cm,\;2.25\~7.75(5.05)cm\;and\;2.25\~8.25(5.95)cm$, and the variance were $0.278\~0.230$, 0.368, 0.701, 1.053 and 1.209, respectively. On the other hand, the variances differed in proportion to the growth of the mussel. The average length of the mussel life was about eighteen months. The mussels growing on the hanging line for arrestation undergo seasonal vicissitudes, and the mussels which fall off, mass into countless numbers during the period from August to October and finally disappear completely in November. The dimensions of the largest mussel are as follows: The shell height : 9.48cm The shell length: 4.49cm The shell breath : 3.55cm The shell weight : 22.05g The weight of the soft parts 19.25g The relative growth of the mussel is indicated as follows: Relationship between the shell height and the shell length: Y =0.486X+0.334 Relationship between the shell height and the shell breadth: Y = 0.359X+0.107 Relationship between the weight of the soft part and the shell weight: Y = 0.882X+0.901 Relationship between the shell height and the weight of the soft part: $$Y\;=\;0.02828X^{2.90518}$$
This study was undertaken to explore the applicability of glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity as a predictable indicator to monitor chemical pollution in shells and fishes utilized for food. There were some variations in the basal level of GST activity depending on species tested. Ark shells, Anadara satowi, showed the highest normal enzyme activity, followed by catfish and marine mussels, Mytilus coruscus. White clams, Meretrix lusoria, Israeli carp and catfish had lower activity. When A. satowi was exposed to 3-methyl-cholanthrene (3-MC), a prototypic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon for 1 week, GST activity decreased by about 30%. This reduction in GST activity induced by 3-MC did not recover until two weeks after the cessation of exposure. GST activity increased in response to 3-MC in most of the other species studied. The GST elevation in M. coruscus attained its maxinum of about 200% at the termination of 3-MC exposure maintaining this level up to 2 weeks, and declined gradually thereafter. 3-MC also induced GST activity in lsraeli carp in a similar fashion to M. coruscus. Phenobarbital induced GST activity both in M. coruscus and lsraeil carp. Other chemicals. such as clofibrate, butylated hydroxyanisole. hexachlorobenzene, and oxolinic acid did not change the enzyme activity significantly in most speciel. Phenol depressed GST activity only in lsraeli carp. These results suggest that the basal level of GST activity is somewhat variable and that the direction of change in response to chemicals seems to be related to its normal activity. The change in enzyme activity can be a preditable indicator of some environmental chemicals such as PAHs and phenol.
This study aimed to develop a species identification method for the egg and fry of the three Korean bitterling fishes (Pisces: Acheilognathinae), including Acheilognathus signifer, Acheilognathus yamatsutae and Rhodeus uyekii based on the PCR-based Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) markers. We conducted a field survey on the Deokchicheon River from the North Han River basin, where the three Acheilognathinae species co-occur, and also analyzed the existing sequence dataset available from the GenBank. We found coexistence of the three species at the study site. The egg and fry were obtained from the host mussels (Unio douglasiae sinuolatus) by hand from May to June 2015 and in May 2017. To develop PCR-based RFLP markers for species identification of the three Acheilognathinae fish species, restriction enzymes pinpointing species-specific single nucleotide variation (SNV) sites in mitochondrial DNA COI (cytochrome oxidase I) and cyt b (cytochrome b) genes were determined. Genomic DNA was extracted from the egg and fry and RFLP experiments were carried out using restriction enzymes Apal I, Stu I and EcoR V for A. signifer, A. yamatsutae and R. uyekii, respectively. Consequently, unambiguous discrimination of the three species was possible, as could be seen in DNA band patterns from gel electrophoresis. Our developed PCR-based RFLP markers will be useful for the determination of the three species for the young and would assist in studying the spawning patterns and reproductive ecology of Acheilognathinae fishes. Furthermore, we believe the obtained information will be of importance for future maintenance, management and conservation of these natural and endangered species.
This study was carried out to determine whether detection of minerals separated from irradiated mussel could be could be done by thermoluminescence (TL) method. After the minerals were separated by sodium polytungstate solution (2.0 g/mL) from irradiated mussel, organic compounds remaining in the minerals were removed by acid-base treatment and dried at 50℃ overnight, and then the minerals were measured through TL. The TL intensities of separated minerals at different irradiation doses during storage conditions of room and darkroom were obtained. TL intensity of first glow curves for minerals separated from irradiated mussel showed linear increase from the control to 5 kGy and slight increase from 5 kGy to 10 kGy. Since glow curve ratios of G2, G3 and G4, calculated from re-irradiated minerals measured immediately after irradiation and after storage of three months were over 0.5, detection of irradiation was possible. G1, which showed the glow curve ratios above 0.1, was classified as non-irradiated samples because the unique first glow curve was not found within the recommended temperature interval (150-230℃). Hence, on the basis of TL intensity, and glow curve ratio and shape, it is possible to correctly identify irradaited mussels after mineral separation during storage.
Morphology of glochidia of two species of Unionidae mussels, Unio douglasiae and Anodonta woodiana were studied based on SEM, and their attachment on Acheilognathus yamatsutae(Acheilognathinae) was observed in the experimentally infected fishes. The glochidia were round-triangle in shape and possessed larval threads, hooks, hooklets, and sensory hairs. Glochidal attachment and cyst formation of the fish were observed without regard to feeding habit and habitat. Density of glochida on the fish (Acheilognathus yamatsutae) was in the order of pectoral fin, dorsal fin, gill and caudal fin. The host fish became encysted about 5-10 hours to the glochidia, and the glochidia detached about 5-6 days after attachment at water temperature $26{\pm}1^{\circ}C$.
Mussels have been commonly used in bioassay for quality assessments of environment. Moreover, several standard protocols for the developmental bioassay of bivalves have been proposed. In this study, the EC50 of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was determined using mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis embryonic developmental bioassay. To determine the sensitivity of M. galloprovincialis, their fertilized eggs were exposed to five PAHs (2-metylnaphthalene, fluorene, dibenzothiophene, phenanthrene, pyrene). The EC50 of 2-metylnaphthalene, fluorene, dibenzothiophene, phenanthrene, and pyrene were 232, 273, 67.9, 43.2, and $33.1{\mu}g/L$, respectively. The overall sensitivity of M. galloprovincialis in the present developmental bioassay was similar to or more sensitive than that of other marine organisms commonly used in aquatic bioassays. The results of this study could be provide with fundamental data of setting standard for protection of marine life and or can use prediction the aquatic toxicity of PAHs.

Octachlorostyrene (OCS) is a primarily concerning chemical in many countries because of its persistent and bioaccumulative properties in the environment. OCS is not commercially manufactured or used but it may be produced during incineration or chemical synthetic processes involving chlorinated compounds. There are several reports that OCS was found in the waters, sediments, fish, mussels, and also in human tissues. However, systematic studies on the OCS toxicities are scarce in literature. In this study, we tried to get the gene expression data using medaka DNA chip to identify biomarkers of OCS exposure. Medaka (Oryzias latipes.) was exposed to OCS 1 ppm for 2 days and 10 days, respectively. Total RNA was extracted and purified by guanidine thiocyanate method and the Cy3- and Cy5-labelled cDNAs produced by reverse trancription of the RNA were hybridized to medaka microarray. As results, eighty five genes were found to be down-or up regulated by OCS. Some of the genes were listed and confirmed by real-time PCR.
