As technology develops, more advanced technologies involving GPS, GIS, RFID and sensor networks have been adopted in agriculture sector for u-Farm. However, technology adoptions have been evaluated as ineffective. Farmers and agri-business have low level of understanding on technology so it is not efficiently utilized. This study introduces a case of RFID/sensor networks of mushroom farm as a u-Farm case study, focusing on developing a framework for analysis of u-Farm investment returns. RFID and sensor networks improve real-time production control, processing management, and traceability. Integration of RFID and sensor networks leads to innovation into the mushroom farm, reducing labor cost, increasing productivity, and improving quality of the mushroom. The ROI which is used as an indicator of performance indicator is 413%.
This study was conducted to provide basic data for setting a standard medium for winter mushroom cultivation. Investigation of medium composition in winter mushroom farms in Korea revealed that the types of medium used for each farm were slightly different and that the mixing ratio of the medium also varied. All farmers used corncob, rice bran, and beet pulp as the main media, and calcium carbonate and ground oyster shells were used at 1.0~3.8% to adjust the pH of the medium. Analysis of the physicochemical properties of the mixed media showed nitrogen content of 1.28~1.52%, carbon content of 45.7~48.5%, and C/N ratio of 30.7~37.9. The content of inorganic components was significantly different in each farm, depending on the type and amount of minerals in the mixed medium. Mycelial growth was the fastest at Farm 2, reaching 6.5 cm within 34 days of culture, followed by Farm 4 at 5.7 cm, whereas Farm 1, 3, and 5 showed similar growth. Mycelial density was high without any significant difference between farms. Survey of yield according to medium composition in each farm showed the highest yield in Farm 2 at 173.4 g/bottle, followed by Farm 1 at 168.4 g/bottle, whereas Farm 3 and 4 showed similar yield. However, Farm 4 had the lowest yield at 145.4 g/bottle. Therefore, mushroom yield was different depending on the medium composition in the farm, and thus selection of a medium that can be used universally in multiple mushroom farms was considered possible.
Mushroom cultivation in Korea was launched in the early 1960's. At that time Korean government started a program for increasing cultivation of button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) and oak mushroom (Lentinula edodes) to export agricultural products and to increase farm income. National research institutes under Rural Development Administration, Korea Forest Service, etc. play a leading role in mushroom industry as follows : Development and spread of genetically superior commercial strains, good spawns, and cultivation techniques. Training and field advice to lead farmers for mass production of high quality mushrooms. Political support of facilities and establishments for mushroom cultivation. Several mushrooms including oak mushroom, button mushroom, oyster mushroom, winter mushroom, Ganoderma, P. eryngii, etc. have been popularized for their cultivation techniques and produced in large quantities in the farm. According to a recent statistics, mushrooms have been grown by about 20,000 farm households, in Korea and the gross production of fresh mushrooms is estimated about 170,000 M/T. The gross production of oyster mushroom is the highest followed by winter mushroom, oak mushroom and button mushroom. The gross amount of mushroom production stands over 700 billion won. Thus, mushroom industry goes to the most important cash crop to be produced yearly.
Purpose: Recently, domestic and abroad consumption of mushroom has been increasing. Especially, oyster mushroom has been the most consumed product, sharing one third of the mushroom market. The air temperature differences between relative positions of the mushroom farms were needs to be minimal. However, in reality, the air temperature differences ranged from 2 to $5^{\circ}C$. Because of this, the mushrooms are non-uniform growth as well as decrease in both quality and quantity. Although air circulators have been employed by oyster mushroom farms to minimize air temperature differences, no experiments have been performed to illustrate the effect of the air circulators. Methods: This experiment is designed to analyze the effect of the air circulation by constructing a prototype air circulator and measuring the air temperature when the circulator was position at different heights (50 cm, 150 cm, 200 cm) from the floor in the center. Result: The horizontal plane air temperature of the first growing bed when the air circulator was installed 50cm above the floor in the center, once not using the air circulators and the other time using the air circulators, yielded the air temperature differences of $8.6^{\circ}C$ and $1.8^{\circ}C$ and deviations of 2.82 and 0.60, respectively. The third growing bed's air temperature differences were $10.0^{\circ}C$, $1.6^{\circ}C$ and deviations 3.28, 0.64, each respectively. These outcomes proved that the use of air circulators minimized the air temperature difference and deviation. The use of air circulators helped minimize the air temperature differences and the derivations in oyster mushroom farm. Conclusion: The use of air circulators helped balance the air temperature distribution in oyster mushroom farm.
Oyster mushroom farm which could not meet optimum temperature range yields non-uniform sized, low quality products. Thus, this study, utilizing STAR CCM+, one of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) programs, analyzed the impact of air circulation and temperature distribution. Methods: After we visited numerous mushroom farms, we measured the temperature at the discharge ports of heaters, fan capacity, and the locations of the air circulators in the farms. According to the data, most mushroom growers installed the heaters near the entrance and discharge ports of the heaters at the third growing bed on the same height as the heaters in the entrance. The temperature at the discharge port of heater was $1,26^{\circ}C$, and the fan capacity was 4,500 $m^3$/hr. The air circulator was placed in the center of the mushroom farm 50cm above the ground, and its capacity of inlet port was 1,100 $m^3$/hr and discharge port 1,600 $m^3$/hr. The mushroom farm was insulated. Results: According to the analysis of the temperature distribution in the vertical plane of the entrance side, no air circulation causes the high temperature zone of 296~299K at the discharge port of the heater to take up 34% of area while the operation of air circulators causes it to occupy only 9%. This means that not using air circulators leads to a concentration of high temperature at the discharge port near the entrance. In addition, with the results of the analysis of the temperature distribution in the vertical planes of the center, no air circulation causes the temperature zone of 295~298K at the discharge port of the heater to take up 48% of area while the operation of air circulators causes it to occupy 80%. This shows that the high outlet port temperature disseminated to the center. Conclusions: After ninety minute operation of both heater and air circulator, the interior temperature became stabilized in the mushroom farm. Air circulation made the high temperature at the discharge port disseminate to the center and exit in the farm and equalize the temperature distribution.

In this study, we developed a "Korean-style button mushroom cultivation Compost post-fermentation system." The purpose is to increase farm income by reducing the labor force of button mushrooms farmers and shortening the production cycle. The "Korean-style button mushroom cultivation Compost post-fermentation system" was designed to reflect the reality of domestic button mushroom farmers. By reducing the temperature difference of the fermentation Compost in the fermentation system, the company produces a button mushroom Compost that ensures uniform quality. As a result of the performance experiment, the working time of the Compost post-fermentation system was shortened by 40 hours. The number of aerobic bacteria and actinomyces that help the button mushrooms Compost increased. Filamentous bacteria that deteriorate the quality of mushrooms have been sterilized.
In this study, the morphology and antioxidant content of shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes) cultivated in smart farms and general farms have been compared. With regard to morphology, mushrooms produced in the smart farm system exhibited a slightly thicker and wider pileus and thicker and longer stipe than those in the general farm system. The stipe in the mushrooms from moderate-sized farms was harder, because the low relative humidity of cultivation rooms could induce mushroom tissue to harden. With regard to the antioxidant content, the free radical scavenging activity was evaluated by the DPPH assay. Among the various treatments, hot water extracts of freeze-dried shiitake produced from smart farms exhibited the highest DPPH value of 37.8%. In contrast, the lowest activity of 12.2% was observed in a 70% fermented alcohol extract of shiitake that was dried by hot air. The polyphenol content was higher in hot water extracts than in 70% fermented alcohol extracts. Additionally, the polyphenol content was higher in the freeze-dried samples than in hot-air dried ones. The smart-farm system was preferred over the general cropping system for cultivating shiitake mushrooms, because the antioxidant activity and polyphenol content of mushrooms from the smart-farm system was better; the functionality of this system was more improved than that of the general cropping system, and it enables mushrooms to be cultivated more efficiently. The antioxidant content is represented as the $mean{\pm}SD$ of three replicates. Different letters indicate significant differences among samples, i.e., p<0.05.

Spawn bottle cutting and spawn cake shredding machine has been developed to save the farm labor and operating cost for mushroom growing farmers. The prototype can cut the bottom and side of the bottle while shredding the spawn cake by one farmer. The cutting plastic shell is done by two couples of high speed disc saws that can cut cross section and lengthwise two side of the bottle, while spawn cake shredding is done by spike teethed rotating drum and wiremesh concave. The optimum speed of cutting disc saw was observed 1.700rpm both the cross cutting saw and lengthwise cutting saw in consideration of the cutting accuracy. And the location for the instalation of cross cutting disc saw was considered as around 4 mm above the table bottom , while the optimum clearance between two edges of lengthwise cutting disc saw was showed 86mm. For the sawdust spawn cake shredder , proper size of spawn sawdust granule was observed in the 15 x 15mm size withmesh concave with the shredding rum speed of 500rpm. The prototype can be reduce 73 per cent of working hours with the working cost reduction of 49 per cent compare with those of conventional operation.
This study was carried out to investigate interaction between mushroom mycelium and microorganisms in cotton waste media for the shelf cultivation of oyster mushroom. Two oyster mushroom farms was selected for this experiment. One was good mushroom farm (farmhouse I) and the other failed mushroom farm (farmhouse II). In farmhouse I, the inhibition microorganisms were higher toward the end of growth stage than the early stage, but the result of farmhouse II was opposite. Effects of the mycelium growth on plate culture showed same results on mushrooms as the earlier one. And the mycelium growth was influenced by secretory materials of microorganisms. Among of the isolates, Only few microorganism had inhibitory effects on either P. tolaasii or T. harzianum causing the disease of oyster mushrooms. But more microorganisms had inhibition effects on P. agarici.
This study was carried out to analyze of the cause of button mushroom production decrease of Gyoengbuk province. In 1978, Agaricus bisporus was produced 48,000 ton and exported more than $50 millions. But since 2000, Domestic production of button mushroom was decreased by 70%, and button mushroom farm was also decreased by 37%. Cultivation area was increased by 6%, but Gyeongbuk Province was decreased by 30%. Especially, Production per $3.3{\ss}{\breve{S}}$ was dramatically decreased more than half. There were several causes such as rising labor and material cost, climate changes, and aging of mushroom cultivation farmers. And there was no effort to develop of domestic button mushroom cultivation equipments. One of the main reasons for this reduction was supplied to low quality of button mushroom compost to the farm.
