승마시뮬레이션 훈련이 다운증후군 아동의 배근육 두께와 기능적 균형에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Horseback Riding Simulation Training on the Thickness of Abdominal Muscles and Functional Balance in Children with Down Syndrome)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study has been performed to find the effect of horseback riding simulation training on the thickness of abdominal muscles and functional balance in children with down syndrome. Methods : This study included 10 children with down syndrome aged between 7 and 13 years. Both groups received regular neurodevelopmental treatment, also experimental group was performed for additional 15 minutes horseback riding simulation training for twice a week during 8 weeks. We measured the thickness of abdominal muscles by using ultrasonography and measured of functional balance by using Pediatric Berg's Balance for the subjects agreed to the before, after 4 weeks and 8 weeks the training. Results : There were no significant difference in the thickness of the internal oblique and external oblique muscles. There were significant difference in transverse abdominis thickness and functional balance that experimental group had increased average than control group after 4 weeks and 8 weeks training Conclusion : Horseback riding simulation training has a positive effect on the improvement of transverse abdominis muscle thickness and functional balance in children with down syndrome.

The Relationship between Muscle Fiber Composition and Pork Taste-traits Assessed by Electronic Tongue System

  • To investigate relationships of electronic taste-traits with muscle fiber type composition (FTC) and contents of nucleotides, porcine longissimus lumborum (LL), psoas major (PM), and infra spinam (IS) muscles were obtained from eight castrated LYD pigs. FTC and taste-traits in these three porcine muscles were measured by histochemical analysis and electronic tongue system, respectively. IS had significantly higher proportion of type I fibers while LL had significantly higher proportion of type IIB than other muscles (p<0.05). IS had the highest inosine monophosphate (IMP) content while LL had the lowest IMP content (p<0.05). In contrast, LL had significantly higher hypoxanthine content compared to PM and IS (both p<0.05). For taste-traits, IS had significantly higher umami and richness values but lower sourness value than LL and PM (p<0.05). Sourness and astringency values of LL were significantly higher than those of IS (p<0.05). The proportion of type IIB fiber was positively correlated with sourness and astringency but negatively correlated with saltiness. These results suggest that sourness and astringency tastes are increased with increasing proportions of type IIB fibers in porcine muscles due to increase of hypoxanthine content. These results also imply that umami and richness tastes are increased with increasing contents of type I and IIA fibers because of increased IMP content in porcine muscles.

Comparison of the muscle activity in the normal and forward head postures based on the pressure level during cranio-cervical flexion exercises

  • Purpose: This paper proposes proper and effective neck exercises by comparing the deep and superficial cervical flexor muscle activities and thickness according to the pressure level during cranio-cervical flexion exercises between a normal posture group and forward head posture group. Methods: A total of 20 subjects (8 males and 12 females) without neck pain and disabilities were selected. The subjects' craniovertebral angles were measured; they were divided into a normal posture and a forward head posture group. During cranio-cervical flexion exercises, the thickness of the deep cervical flexor neck muscle and the activity of the surface neck muscles were measured using ultrasound and EMG. Results: The results showed that the thickening of the deep cervical flexor was increased significantly to 28 and 30 mmHg in the forward head posture group. The sternocleidomastoid muscle activity increased significantly to 24, 26, 28, and 30 mmHg in the forward head posture group. The anterior scalene muscle activity increased significantly to 26, 28, and 30mmHg in the forward head posture group. A significant difference of 26, 28, and 30 mmHg in the sternocleidomastoid and anterior scalene muscles was observed between two groups. Conclusion: To prevent a forward head posture and maintain proper cervical curve alignment, the use of the superficial cervical flexor muscles must be minimized. In addition, to perform a cranio-cervical flexion exercises to effectively activate the deep cervical flexor muscles, 28 and 30 mmHg for normal posture adults and 28 mmHg for adults with forward head postures are recommended.

Effects of Facial Exercise for Facial Muscle Strengthening and Rejuvenation: Systematic Review

  • Purpose: The mass of facial muscles can be increased through exercise, as is also the case for muscles in the extremities. This systematic review was conducted to investigate the effect of facial exercises on facial muscle strengthening and facial rejuvenation, focusing on recent studies. Methods: A literature search was performed using the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science databases. The quality of the trials was evaluated according to the PEDro scale. In total, 11 studies were included in this review: four studies on facial exercise for facial rejuvenation and seven studies on strengthening the muscles of the face. Results: Facial exercises for facial rejuvenation increased the mechanical properties and elasticity of the skin of the face and neck, the thickness and cross-sectional area of the facial muscles, and the fullness of the upper and lower cheeks. Conclusion: A study aimed at strengthening facial muscles showed improvements in labial closure strength and tongue elevation strength. Despite the positive results for facial rejuvenation and muscle strengthening, the level of evidence was low. Therefore, in future research, it will be necessary to investigate the effects of facial exercise in a thoroughly controlled experiment with a sufficient sample size to increase the level of evidence.

Change of Balance Ability in Subjects with Pain-Related Temporomandibular Disorders

  • Purpose: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a condition defined as pain and dysfunction of temporomandibular joints and masticatory muscles. Abnormal interconnections between temporomandibular muscles and cervical spine structures can cause the changes of postural alignment and balance ability. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in static balance ability in subjects with painrelated TMD. Methods: This study conducted on 25 subjects with TMD and 25 control subjects with no TMD. Pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) of the masseter and temporalis muscles were measured using a pressure algometer. Static balance ability was assessed during one leg standing using an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor. During balance task, the IMU sensors measured motion and transfer movement data for center of mass (COM) motion, ankle sway and hip sway. Results: PPTs of masseter and temporalis muscles were significantly lower in the TMD group than in the control group (p<0.05). One leg standing, hip sway, and COM sway results were significantly greater in the TMD group (p<0.05), but ankle sways were not different between group. Conclusion: We suggest pain-related TMD is positively related to reduced PPTs of masticatory muscles and to static balance ability. These results should be considered together with global body posture when evaluating or treating pain-related TMD.

Comparison of Dynamic Muscle Activation during Fente Execution in Fencing Between Wearing Weighted and Waterbag Vests

  • Objective: This study aimed to compare the activity of the trunk and leg muscles while performing fente (in fencing) wearing weighted and waterbag vests. Method: The electromyography test was used to measure and analyze the activation of the trunk and leg muscles. Eight active fencers from B University (age: 19.5 ± 0.66 years, height: 179.75 ± 5.93 cm, weight: 72 ± 6.32 kg) were selected for this study. Results: According to the EMG analysis results of the 4 muscles measured in this study, left-right differences were observed for rectus abdominis and external oblique abdominis, but left-right differences between the groups were not significant. The gluteus medius muscle was not significantly different from the adductor muscle, but there were significant differences between the groups. Conclusion: The electromyographic analysis of the four muscles measured in this study revealed no significant difference between the left and right recti abdominis and external obliques depending on the vests. However, significant differences were observed between the left and right gluteus medius and adductor longus. Our results can be interpreted as the effects of the inherent movements involved in the fente. Furthermore, our results indicate that the weight transfer while wearing a waterbag vest, which provides an unstable environment, increased the activity of leg muscles.

Effect of Wearable Passive Back Support Exoskeleton on the Peak Muscle Activation of the Erector Spinae Muscles During Lifting

  • Background: Using wearable passive back-support exoskeletons in workplace has attracted attention as devices that support the posture of workers, enhance their physical capabilities, and reduce physical risk factors. Objects: This study aimed to investigate the effect of a wearable passive back-support exoskeleton on the activity of the erector spinae muscles during lifting tasks at various heights. Methods: Twenty healthy adult males were selected as subjects. Electromyography (EMG) was used to assess the activity of the erector spinae muscles while performing lifting tasks at three distinct heights (30, 40, and 50 cm), with and without the application of the Wearable Passive Back Support Exoskeleton. EMG data were gathered before and after the application of the orthosis. Results: The use of the Wearable Passive Back Support Exoskeleton resulted in a significant decrease in muscle activity when lifting a 10 kg object from heights of 30 and 40 cm (p < 0.05). Additionally, there was a significant reduction in muscle activity when lifting from a height of 50 cm compared with that at lower heights (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The use of a wearable passive back-support exoskeleton led to a decrease in the activity of the erector spinae muscles during lifting tasks, irrespective of the object's height. Our results suggest that the orthosis we tested may help decrease risk of lower back injuries during lifting.

  • Pneumothorax after needle electromyography is a rare complication, which usually associated with examination of diaphragmatic and intercostal muscles. However, by the literatures, it can also occur with supraspinatus, serratus anterior and paraspinal muscles. We experienced a case of pneumothorax after cervical paraspinal muscle needle electromyography. From the anatomical vulnerability of pneumothorax during needle insertion, we emphasized the importance of avoiding this complication.

  • The origin of the 15 levator menti muscles were examined by dissection. The cadavers had been fixed in formalin. The following observations were made. Sixty-six per cent of the muscles examined originated on the crest of the bone of the residual ridge. Twenty per cent of the muscles originated between the crest of the residual ridge and the fornix of the Iabial vestibule.

  • Thoracic outlet syndrome's chief symptom has numbness and tingling sensation of tharm, hand and fingers. In the morning, patient complain of pins and needles of the hands and weakness. TOS classified three categories : Anterior scalene syndrome, Claviculocostal syndrome, Pectoralis minor syndrome Physical therapy of the TOS is heat, massage for soft tissue, stretching exercise for scalene muscles and pectoralis minor muscles, and strengthening exercise for upper trapezius and levator scapular and neck muscles. A main problem of soft tissue is mechanical causes, so physical therapists have to solve that problem by mechanical manual methods.
