Defining the Nature of Online Chat in Relation to Speech and Writing

  • Style is considered a pivotal construct in sociolinguistic variation studies. While previous studies have examined style in traditional forms of language such as speech, very little research has examined new and emerging styles such as computer-mediated discourse. Thus, the present study attempts to investigate style in the online communication mode of chat. In so doing, the study compares text-based online chat with speech and writing. Online chat has been previously described as a hybrid form of language that is close to speech. Here, the exact nature of online chat is elucidated by focusing on contraction use. Differential acquisition of stylistic variation is also examined according to English learning background. The empirical component consists of data from Korean speakers of English. Data is taken from a written summary, an oral interview, and a text-based online chat session. A multivariate analysis was conducted. Results indicate that online chat is indeed a hybrid form that is difficult to delineate from speech and writing. Text-based online chat shows a somewhat similar rate of contraction to speech, which confirms its hybridity.. Lastly, some implications of the study are given in terms of the learning and acquisition of style in general and in online contextual modes.

  • 이 논문은 자동차 차체 조립과정에서, 품질관리의 일환으로써, 비접촉 자동측정시스템을 이용하여 검사해야 하는 수많은 비독립적인 검사점을 다변량분산분석과 주성분분석을 이용하여 효율적으로 검사점을 감소시키는 방법을 설명하고 있다. 이 연구의 목적은 다변량분산분석, 주성분 분석의 개념과 이러한 기법들을 산업체 제조분야에서 응용하는 방법을 설명하여 독자의 사례 응용 이해를 돕는데 있으며, 또한 특히 주성분분석을 이용하여 수 많은 비독립적인 검사점을 어떻게 유효하게 줄여나가는지를 보여주고자 한다. 독자의 이해를 돕기 위하여 위와 같은 절차를 순서대로 설명하였으며, 실제 자동차 조립공장에서 발생하는 사례를 수치 예를 들어 설명하였다.

Metabolic Discrimination of Safflower Petals of Various Origins Using 1H NMR Spectroscopy and Multivariate Statistical Analysis

  • The metabolic discrimination of safflowers from various geographical origins was performed using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy followed by principal components analysis. With a combination of these techniques, safflower samples from different origins could be discriminated using the first two principal components (PC) of the 1H NMR spectra of the 50% methanol fractions. PC1 and PC2 accounted cumulatively for 91.3% of the variation in all variables. The major peaks in the 1H NMR spectra that contributed to the discrimination were assigned to fatty acid (terminal CH3), lactic acid, acetic acid, choline derivatives, glycine, and safflower yellow derivatives. In this study, we suggest that various types of safflower can be discriminated using PCA and 1H NMR spectra.

Varietal Classification by Multivariate Analysis on Quantitative Traits in Pecan

  • Twenty two varieties of pecan including wild types were classified based on 6 characters measured by principal component analysis score distance. The results are summarized as fellow. Twenty two varieties were classified into 5 groups based in PCA score distance. Five groups were distinctly characterized by many morphological characters. Total variation could be explained by 51%, 95%, 99% with first, third and fifth principal components respectively. Varimax rotation of the factor loading of the first factors indicated that the first component was highly loaded with leaf characters, the second component with fruit characters, but fruit length was negative loaded. The second, the third and the fourths groups of cultivars had very close genetic parentage similarity.

Factors associated with treatment outcomes of patients hospitalized with severe maxillofacial infections at a tertiary center

  • Objectives: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the variables associated with length of stay (LOS), hospital costs, intensive care unit (ICU) use, and treatment outcomes in patients hospitalized for maxillofacial infections at a tertiary medical center in South Korea. Materials and Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted for patients admitted for treatment of maxillofacial infections at Dankook University Hospital from January 1, 2011 through September 30, 2020. A total of 390 patient charts were reviewed and included in the final statistical analyses. Results: Average LOS and hospital bill per patient of this study was 11.47 days, and ₩4,710,017.25 ($4,216.67), respectively. Of the 390 subjects, 97.3% were discharged routinely following complete recovery, 1.0% expired following treatment, and 0.8% were transferred to another hospital. In multivariate linear regression analyses to determine variables associated with LOS, admission year, infection side, Flynn score, deep neck infection, cardiovascular disease, admission C-reactive protein (CRP) and glucose levels, number and length of surgical interventions, tracheostomy, time elapsed from admission to first surgery, and length of ICU stay accounted for 85.8% of the variation. With regard to the total hospital bill, significantly associated variables were age, type of insurance, Flynn score, number of comorbidities, admission CRP, white blood cell, and glucose levels, admission temperature, peak temperature, surgical intervention, the length, type, and location of surgery, tracheostomy, time elapsed from admission to first surgery, and length of ICU use, which accounted for 90.4% of the variation. Age and ICU use were the only variables significantly associated with unfavorable discharge outcomes in multivariate logistic regression analysis. Conclusion: For successful and cost-effective management of maxillofacial infections, clinicians to be vigilant about the decision to admit patients with maxillofacial infections, perform appropriate surgery at an adequate time, and admit them to the ICU.

성별 및 채뇨 시각별 $^1H$ NMR 기반 뇨 대사체 프로파일링 연구 ($^1H$ NMR-Based Urinary Metabolic Profiling of Gender and Diurnal Variation in Healthy Korean Subjects)

  • Objectives : This study was undertaken to examine the metabolomic changes due to gender and diurnal variation at sampling time and to identify an appropriate time point for urine sampling in epidemiologic studies using metabolomic profiles. Methods : Urine samples were collected twice a day (morning and afternoon) from 20 healthy Korean adults after fasting for 8 hours. The metabolomic assay was investigated using $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy coupled with the principal components analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). The metabolites responsible for differentiation between groups were identified through the loading plot of PLS-DA and quantified using Chenomx NMR Suite with a 600 MHz library. Results : Metabolites responsible for differentiation in gender and sampling time were creatinine, trimethyl anine oxide (TMAO), hippurate, mannitol, citrate and acetoacetate. Dimethylamine showed difference only as a factor of diurnal time. The level of creatinine was higher in men compared to women, and the levels of citrate, TMAO, hippurate, mannitol, and acetoacetate were higher in women compared to men. The levels of creatinine, TMAO, hippurate, dimethylamine and mannitol were higher in the morning rather than the afternoon while those of citrate and acetoacetate were higher in the afternoon rather than the morning. Conclusions : Since urinary metabolomic profiles varied by gender and diurnal cycle, urine sampling should be performed at the same time point for all participants in epidemiologic studies using metabolomic profiles.

주성분 분석을 이용한 측정시스템의 경제적 평가 (Economic Evaluation of Measurement System by Principal Component Analysis)

  • It is very important to have a satisfactory measurement system, since it is useless to try to improve the manufacturing process without an adequate measurement system. Therefore, evaluation of the measurement system is the first step for the quality improvement of the manufacturing process. To estimate the measurement error we must conduct a controlled gage repeatability and reproducibility(gage R&R) study. Many manufacturers use a gage or instrument to measure multiple dimensions for the overall quality of the manufactured parts. In this case, it is necessary to estimate the gage R&R for multiple dimensions. When a gage measures a large number of dimensions of a part, it is very time-consuming and costly to measure all the dimensions. In this paper we propose the use of the principal component analysis method to identify a few principal components out of the original multivariate measurement capability to explain most of the measurement system variation pattern.

영산강 수계 오염특성 파악을 위한 다변량 통계분석법의 적용 (Evaluation of Pollutant Characteristics in Yeongsan River Using Multivariate Analysis)

  • 본 연구는 영산강수계 수질 특성을 파악하기 위하여 2001~2010년까지 영산강 본류 10개 지점의 수질측정자료를 활용하여 총 18개 수질항목에 대하여 다변량분석법을 이용하여 수질항목간의 상관관계 및 요인분석, 군집분석을 수행하였다. 수질항목간 상관성은 BOD는 T-N, T-P와 높은 양의 상관성을, Chl-a는 COD와 유의한 양의 상관성을 보였다. 요인분석 결과 제1요인이 영양염류요인(32.021%), 제2요인이 유기물 및 조류증식에 따른 물질대사 요인(17.453%), 제3요인이 계절적 변동요인(14.775%), 제4요인이 미생물요인(10.951%)으로 추출되었다. 요인분석 결과로부터 추출된 제1요인과 제2요인에 대한 군집 분석 결과, 오염도가 낮은 그룹, 광주천 및 하수처리수 방류의 영향이 큰 오염도가 높은 그룹, 축산농가 및 농경지 등이 인근에 분포하는 그룹 등 3 그룹으로 분류되었다.

추계학적 강우변동생성 기법과 GIS를 연계한 2차원 침수해석 (Two-dimensional Inundation Analysis Using Stochastic Rainfall Variation and Geographic Information System)

  • 최근에 발생하는 강우양상은 강우일수는 감소하고, 강우강도는 증가해 홍수발생 빈도 역시 증가하는 추세이다. 이를 반영하기 위한 기존의 방법은 수공구조물의 설계홍수량을 산정할 때 가능최대강우량을 도입하거나, 설계빈도를 높이는 등의 확정론적 방법에 의존한다. 그러나 이렇게 설계기준을 상향 조정한 경우, 설계빈도의 강우가 발생하지 않으면 수공구조물의 경제성 측면에서 문제가 될 소지가 있다. 또한 수공구조물의 규모가 클수록 인근 주민과의 마찰이 커지고, 환경 문제의 발생 역시 고려하지 않을 수 없다. 이에 따라 설계빈도의 무조건적인 상향조정에 의존하기보다 추계학적 방법을 도입한 수문량의 확충 및 매개변수의 불확실성을 수공구조물 설계 시에 고려하기 위한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 강우발생의 불확실성을 반영하여 제내지에서의 침수범위를 GIS상에서 검토하였다. 이를 위해 log-ratio 방법, Johnson 시스템, 직교변환을 활용한 다변량 Monte Carlo 기법으로 추계학적 시간에 따른 강우변동을 생성하였다. 생성된 강우변동 결과를 토대로 수문분석, 홍수위 분석 등을 실시하고 FLUMEN 모형을 적용하여 해당유역에 대한 홍수범람시 침수범위를 산정하였다. 본 연구결과는 실제 강우의 불확실성을 반영하고 있어 시 공간적 강우특성이 반영된 유역별 주민대피지도, 홍수위험지도 등을 제작하는데 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Genetic Variation and Divergence among Swamp Buffalo, River Buffalo and Cattle: A Microsatellite Survey on Five Populations in China

  • Domestic buffalo and cattle are two extremely important livestock species in worldwide agricultural production. In this paper, to investigate genetic diversity and divergence among swamp buffalo, river buffalo and cattle, 30 microsatellite markers were screened on 168 individuals sampled from five populations. Substantial differences were observed among the three groups of animals with respect to allele frequency distribution, allele size and polymorphism. The cattle sample (Mongolian) showed significantly higher genetic variability (0.674 of gene diversity, p<0.01), and the swamp and river buffalo samples displayed similar degree of genetic variation (0.536 in swamp and 0.546 in river, p = 0.92). Results of both phylogenetic tree and multivariate analysis could distinguish three groups of animals, suggesting their deep evolutionary divergence. Additionally, using $({\delta}{\mu})^2$ genetic distance, we estimated a divergence time of 1.7 million years between swamp and river buffalo that strongly supported distinct genetic origins for the two buffalo types.
