  • We report relative proper motion measurements of $H_{2}O$ masers in massive star-forming region W51 Main, based on data sets of VLBI observations for $H_{2}O$ masers at 22 GHz with Japanese VERA telescopes from 2003 to 2006. Data reductions and single-beam imaging analysis are to measure internal kinematics of maser spots and eventually to estimate the three-dimensional kinematics of $H_{2}O$ masers in W51 Main. Average space motions and proper motion measurements of $H_{2}O$ masers are given both graphical and in table formats. We find in this study that W51 Main appears to be associated with hyper-compact H II region with multiple massive proto-stars whose spectral types are of late O.

  • In this paper, we propose a video summarization system which is based on activity in video acquired by multiple non-overlapping cameras for wide-area surveillance. The proposed system separates persons by time-independent background removal and detects activities of the segmented persons by their motions. In this paper, we extract eleven activities based on whose direction the persons move to and consider a key-frame as a frame which contains a meaningful activity. The proposed system summarizes based on activity-based key-frames and controls an amount of summarization according to an amount of activities. Thus the system can summarize videos by camera, time, and activity.

  • The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data are considered to contain the greatest amount of information among various microwave techniques developed for measuring ocean variables from aircraft or satellites. They have the potential of measuring wavelength, wave direction and wave height of the ocean waves. But, it is difficult to retrieve significant ocean wave heights and surface current from conventional SAR data, since the imaging mechanism of ocean waves by a SAR is determined by the three basic modulation processes arise through the tilt modulation, hydrodynamic modulation and velocity bunching which are poorly known functions. Along-Track Interferometric (ATI) SAR systems can directly detect the Doppler shift associated with each pixel of a SAR image and have been used to estimate wave fields and surface currents. However, the Doppler shift is not simply proportional to the component of the mean surface current. It includes also contributions associated with the phase velocity of the Brags waves and orbital motions of all ocean waves that are longer than Brags waves. In this paper, we have developed a new method for extracting the surface current vector using multiple-frequency (L- & C-band) ATI SAR data, and have generated surface wave height information.

  • Notion sickness is well known to be caused by long time exposure to the very low frequency motion in the multiple axes of human body Since the vestibular system for the perception of low frequency motion is located in the head, accurate measurement of 6 degree of freedom head motion is of great importance. In this study, the measurement system consisting of a safety helmet and 9 translational accelerometers was constructed for the estimation of 3 translational and 3 rotational motions of human head. Since estimation errors of 3 rotational components can be significantly magnified even by small offset of the sensitivity axis from the geometric center of an accelerometer, accurate measurement of sensitivity axis must be preceded. The method for accurate estimation of the offset was proposed, and the effect of offset on the estimation of angular acceleration was investigated.

  • A holonomic drive can provide rotational and translational acceleration simultaneously in any direction. For this reason the holonomic drive technology is very desirable in creating motion for any mobile platform and has many promising mobility applications in the field of robotics and automation where manipulability is critical issue especially when the mobile system is operated in obstacle prone environment. In this paper a pragmatic methodology for realizing a holonomic drive system using multiple servo-casters is presented. The steering and driving of each servo-caster is controlled such that they are coordinated with the motions of other servo-casters in order to realize holonomic motion. This paper also proposes algorithms for varying manipulability as operation situation demands.

  • Kim et al.(I999) presented a non-linear finite element formulation of spatial ocean cables using multiple noded cable elements. The initial equilibrium state of ocean cables subjected to self-weights, support motions, and current forces was determined using the load incremental method and free vibration analysis were performed considering added mass, In this paper, the methods to generate regular and irregular waves and calculate wave forces due to these waves are discussed and challenging example problems are presented in order to investigate dynamic non-linear behaviors of ocean cables subjected to wave loadings.

  • A novel three-degree-of-freedom (DOF) forced vibration system has been developed for identification of aeroelastic (self-excited) load parameters used in time-domain response analysis of wind-excited flexible structures. This system is capable of forcing sinusoidal motions on a section model of a structure that is used in wind tunnel aeroelastic studies along all three degrees of freedom - along-wind, cross-wind, and torsional - simultaneously or in any combination thereof. It utilizes three linear actuators to force vibrations at a consistent frequency but varying amplitudes between the three. This system was designed to identify all the parameters, namely, aeroelastic- damping and stiffness that appear in self-excited (motion-dependent) load formulation either in time-domain (rational functions) or frequency-domain (flutter derivatives). Relatively large displacements (at low frequencies) can be generated by the system, if required. Results from three experiments, airfoil, streamlined bridge deck and a bluff-shaped bridge deck, are presented to demonstrate the functionality and robustness of the system and its applicability to multiple cross-section types. The system will allow routine identification of aeroelastic parameters through wind tunnel tests that can be used to predict response of flexible structures in extreme and transient wind conditions.

  • Results of an extensive study aiming to properly extend the well known pushover analysis into 3-D problems of asymmetric buildings are presented in this paper. The proposed procedure uses simple, 3 DOF, one-story models with shear-beam type elements in order to quantify the effects of inelastic torsional response of such buildings. Correction coefficients for the response quantities at the "stiff" and "flexible" sides are calculated using results from non-linear time history analyses of the simple models. Their values are then applied to the results of a simple, plane pushover analysis of the detailed building models. Results from the application of the new method for a set of three, conventionally designed, five-story buildings with high values of uniaxial eccentricities are compared with those obtained from multiple non-linear dynamic time history analyses, as well as from similar pushover methods addressing the same problem. This initial evaluation indicates that the proposed procedure is a clear improvement over the simple (conventional) pushover method and, in most cases, more accurate and reliable than the other methods considered. The accuracy, however, of all these methods is reduced substantially when they are applied to torsionally flexible buildings. Thus, for such challenging problems, use of inelastic dynamic analyses for a set of two component earthquake motions appears to be the preferable solution.

  • The white-light scanning interferometer (WSI) is an effective optical measurement system for high-precision industries (e.g., flat-panel display and electronics packaging manufacturers) and semiconductor manufacturing industries. Its major disadvantages include a slow image-capturing speed for interferogram acquisition and a high computational cost for peak-detection on the acquired interferogram. Here, a WSI system is proposed for the semiconductor inspection process. The new imaging acquisition technique uses an 'on-the-fly' imaging system. During the vertical scanning motion of the WSI, interference fringe images are sequentially acquired at a series of pre-defined lens positions, without conventional stepwise motions. To reduce the calculation time, a parallel computing method is used to link multiple personal computers (PCs). Experiments were performed to evaluate the proposed high-speed WSI system.

  • The goal of many researchers in the field of structural engineering is to reduce both damage to building structures and discomfort of their inhabitants during strong motion seismic events. The present paper reports on analytical work conducted with this aim in mind as a prior research of experimental study. A four-story, 6.4 m tall, laboratory model of a building is employed as a example structure. The laboratory structure has graphite epoxy columns and each floor is equipped with a chevron brace that serves to resist inter-story drift with the installation of a magnetorheological (MR) damper. An artificial excitation has been generated with a robust range of seismic characteristics. A series of numerical simulations demonstrates that an optimized fuzzy controller is capable of robust performance for a variety of seismic base motions. Optimization of the fuzzy controller is achieved using multi-objective genetic algorithm(MOGA), i.e. NSGA-II. Multiple objective functions are used in order to reduce both peak and root-means-squared displacement and accelerations at the floor levels of the building.
