The wireless mesh network (WMN) has attracted significant interests as a broadband wireless network to provide ubiquitous wireless access for broadband services. Especially with incorporating multiple orthogonal channels and multiple directional antennas into the WMN, each node can communicate with its neighbor nodes simultaneously without interference between them. However, as we allow more freedom, we need a more sophisticated algorithm to fully utilize it and developing such an algorithm is not easy in general. In this paper, we study a joint channel assignment, link scheduling, routing, and rate control problem for the WMN with multiple orthogonal channels and multiple directional antennas. This problem is inherently hard to solve, since the problem is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear problem (MINLP). However, despite of its inherent difficulty, we develop an algorithm to solve the problem by using the generalized Benders decomposition approach [2]. The simulation results show the proposed algorithm provides the optimal solution to maximize the network utility, which is defined as the sum of utilities of all sessions.

Directional sensor networks (DSNs) can significantly improve the performance of a network by employing energy efficient communication protocols. Neighbor discovery is a vital part of medium access control (MAC) and routing protocol, which influences the establishment of communication between neighboring nodes. Neighbor discovery is a challenging task in DSNs due to the limited coverage provided by directional antennas. Furthermore, in these networks, communication can only take place when the beams of the directional antennas are pointed toward each other. In this article, we propose a novel multiple token-based neighbor discovery (MuND) protocol, in which multiple tokens are transmitted based on an area exploration algorithm. The performance of the protocol is evaluated using the Cooja simulator. The simulation results reveal that the proposed MuND protocol achieves lower neighbor discovery latency, with a 100% neighbor discovery ratio, and has a relatively low communication overhead and low energy consumption.

A wide-band multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with dual-band (2.4 and 5 GHz) operation is proposed for premium indoor access points (IAPs). Typically, an omni-directional pattern is used for dipole antennas and a directional radiation pattern is used for patch antennas. In this paper, both antenna types were used to compare their performance with that of the proposed $2{\times}2$ MIMO antenna. We simulated and measured the performance of the MIMO antenna, including the isolation, envelope correlation coefficient (ECC), mean effective gain (MEG) for the IAPs, and the throughput, in order to determine its communication quality. The performance of the antennas was analyzed according to the ECC and MEG. The proposed antenna has sufficient performance and excellent characteristics, making it suitable for IAPs. We analyzed the communication performance of wireless networks using the throughput data of a typical office environment. The network throughput of an 802.11n device was used for the comparison and was conducted according to the antenna type. The results showed that the values of the ECC, MEG, and the throughput have unique characteristics in terms of their directivity, antenna gains, isolation, etc. This paper also discusses the communication performance of various aspects of MIMO in multipath situations.
The wireless transmission medium inherently broadcasts a signal to all neighbor nodes in the transmission range. Existing asynchronous MAC protocols do not provide a concrete solution for reliable broadcast in link layer. This mainly comes from that an omni-directional broadcasting causes to reduce the network performance due to the explosive collisions and contentions. This paper proposes a reliable broadcast protocol in link taller based on directional antennas, named MDB(MAC protocol for Directional Broadcasting). This protocol makes use of DAST(Directional Antennas Statement Table) information and D-MACA(Directional Multiple Access and Collision Avoidance) scheme through 4-way handshake to resolve the many collision problem wit]1 omni-directional antenna. To analyze its performance, MDB protocol is compared with IEEE 802.11 DCF protocol [9] and the protocol 2 of reference [3], in terms of the success rate of broadcast and the collision rate. As a result of performance analysis through simulation, it was confirmed that the collision rate of the MDB protocol is lower than those of IEEE 802.11 and the protocol 2 of reference [3], and that the completion rate of broadcast of MDB protocol is higher than those of IEEE 802.11 and the protocol 2 of reference [3].

Ad hoc wireless networks operate without any infrastructure where a node can be a source and a router at the same time. This indispensably requires high throughput and low delay performance throughout the wireless network coverage span, particularly under heavy traffic conditions. Recent research on using multiple antennas in beam-forming or multiplexing modes over a wireless channel has shown promising results in terms of high throughput and low delay. Directional antennas have shown to increase spatial reuse by allowing multiple transmitters and receivers to communicate using. directional beams as long as they do not significantly interfere with each other. However directional antenna performance asymptotically approaches the omni-directional performance in a high density ad hoc network. Simulation results in QualNet validate that average throughput and packet corruption ratio of directional antenna approach omni-directional performance. Moreover, we further highlight some important issues pertaining to the directional antenna performance in wireless networks.
In this paper, the directional carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol in the immediate acknowledgement mode for IEEE 802.15.3c is analyzed under saturation environments. For the analysis, a sensing region and an exclusive region with a directional antenna are computed probabilistically and a Markov chain model in which the features of IEEE 802.15.3c and the effects of using directional antennas are incorporated is analyzed. An algorithm to find the maximal number of concurrently transmittable frames is proposed. The system throughput and the average transmission delay are obtained in closed forms. The numerical results show the impact of directional antennas on the CSMA/CA media access control (MAC) protocol. For instance, the throughput with a small beamwidth of antenna is more than ten times larger than that for an omnidirectional antenna. The overall analysis is verified by a simulation. The obtained results will be helpful in developing an MAC protocol for enhancing the performance of mmWave wireless personal area networks.

This paper presents a novel scheme that quickly searches for the optimal direction of multiple directional antennas, and locks on to it for high-speed millimeter wavelength transmissions, when communications to another antenna directional are disconnected. The proposed method utilizes a modified genetic algorithm, which selects a superior initial group through preprocessing in order to solve the local solution in genetic algorithm. TDD (Time Division Duplex) is utilized as the transfer method and data controller for the antenna. Once the initial communication is completed for the specific number of individuals, no longer antenna's data will be transmitted nil each station processes GA in order to produce the next generation. After reproduction, individuals of the next generation become the data, and communication between each station is made again. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed system, simulation results of 1:1, 1:2, 1:5 directional antennas and experiment results of 1:1 directionalantennas confirmed the efficiency of the proposed method. The 16bit split is 8bit, but it has similar performance as 16bit gene.

Several studies made for wireless mesh networks aim to optimize the capacity for wireless networks. Aside from protocol improvements, researches were also done on the physical layer particularly on modulation techniques and antenna efficiency schemes. This paper is concerned with the capacity improvements derived from using spatial diversity with smart adaptive array antennas. The use of spatial diversity, which has been widely proposed for use in cellular networks in order to lessen frequency re-use, can be used in mesh networks both to minimize co-channel interference (CCI) and enable multiple transmissions. This paper aims to study the capacity region and bounds in using smart antennas for single-channel multi-radio systems in relation to the number of spatial diversity or sectors as defined by the beam angle $\beta$.
In this paper, we explore the utility of recently discovered multiple-antenna techniques (namely MIMO techniques) for medium access control (MAC) design and routing in mobile ad hoc networks. Specifically, we focus on ad hoc networks where the spatial diversity technique is used to combat fading and achieve robustness in the presence of user mobility. We first examine the impact of spatial diversity on the MAC design, and devise a MIMO MAC protocol accordingly. We then develop analytical methods to characterize the corresponding saturation throughput for MIMO multi-hop networks. Building on the throughout analysis, we study the impact of MIMO MAC on routing. We characterize the optimal hop distance that minimizes the end-to-end delay in a large network. For completeness, we also study MAC design using directional antennas for the case where the channel has a strong line of sight (LOS) component. Our results show that the spatial diversity technique and the directional antenna technique can enhance the performance of mobile ad hoc networks significantly.
