The new stage of metastatic lung cancer based upon resectability, disease-free interval, and the number of pulmonary metastases was proposed in 1998 by Ginsberg, et al. We evaluated the validity of the new staging proposal for pulmonary metastases through the analysis of experiences at Severance Hospital. Material and Method: The cases of 111 patients who underwent resection of metastatic lung cancer during the eleven-year period (1990-2000) were reviewed. Of these patients, 103(92.8%) underwent compete surgical resection. The primary tumor was carcinoma in 60 cases, sarcoma in 46, and others in 5. The disease-free interval(DFI) was 0 to 35 months in 79 cases adn more than 36 months in 32 cases. Single metastasis accounted for 53 cases and multiple lesions for 58 cases. Mean follow-up was 49 months. Result: The actuarial survival after complete metastasectomy was 48.2% at 3 years and 32.6% at 5 years; the corresponding values for incomplete resection were 21.9% at 3 years. The 3-year survival rate(3-YSR) for complete resction was 40.5% and 5-year survival rate(5-YSR) was 30.4% for patients with a DFI less than 36 months, the 3-YSR, 75.8% and 5-YSR, 39.0% for those with a DFI equal or more than 36 moths; 45.8% and 30.5% for single lesions, 50.0% and 34.4% for multiple lesions. The 3-YSR and 5-YSR were 58.5% and 43.8% for stage I patients, 54.0% and 37.4% for stage II, 38.2% and 27.9% for stage III and 21.9% for stage IV. Conclusion: The result of the analysis of new stage of pulmonary metastases showed that the survival rate was different according to stage and there was no statistical significance. We need more experiences and long-term follow up to determine the prognostic factor of metastatic lung cancer surgery.

The purpose of this study is to investigate basically the mechanism of heat transfer by the resolution of complex fluid flow inside a sophisticated designed screw dryer for the treatment of sewage sludge by using numerical analysis and experimental study. By doing this, the result was quite helpful to obtain the design criteria for enhancing drying efficiency, thereby achieving the optimal design of a multiple screw type dryer for treating inorganic and organic sludge wastes. One notable design feature of the dryer was to bypass a certain of fraction of the hot combustion gases into the bottom of the screw cylinder, by the fluid flow induction, across the delicately designed holes on the screw surface to agitate internally the sticky sludges. This offers many benefits not only in the enhancement of thermal efficiency even for the high viscosity material but also greater flexibility in the application of system design and operation. However, one careful precaution was made in operation in that when distributing the hot flue gas over the lump of sludge for internal agitation not to make any pore blocking and to avoid too much pressure drop caused by inertial resistance across the lump of sludge. The optimal retention time for rotating the screw at 1 rpm in order to treat 200 kg/hr of sewage sludge was determined empirically about 100 minutes. The corresponding optimal heat source was found to be 150,000 kcal/hr. A series of numerical calculation is performed to resolve flow characteristics in order to assist in the system design as function of important system and operational variables. The numerical calculation is successfully evaluated against experimental temperature profile and flow field characteristics. In general, the calculation results are physically reasonable and consistent in parametric study. In further studies, more quantitative data analyses such as pressure drop across the type and loading of drying sludge will be made for the system evaluation in experiment and calculation.

Ultrasound measurements of backfat thickness (UBF), longissimus muscle area (ULMA) and marbling score (UMS) and carcass measurements of carcass weight (CW), backfat thickness (BF), longissimus muscle area (LMA), and marbling score (MS) on 7,044 Hanwoo steers were analyzed to estimate genetic parameters. Data from Hanwoo steers that were raised, finished in Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do (province) and shipped to slaughter houses during the period from October 2010 to April 2013 were evaluated. Ultrasound measurements were taken at approximately three months before slaughter by an experienced operator using a B-mode real-time ultrasound device (HS-2000, FHK Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) with a 3.5 MHz linear probe. Ultrasound scanning was on the left side between 13th rib and the first lumbar vertebrae. All slaughtering processes and carcass evaluations were performed in accordance with the guidelines of beef grading system of Korea. To estimate genetic parameters, multiple trait animal models were applied. Fixed effects included in the models were: the effects of farm, contemporary group effects (year-season at the time of ultrasound scanning in the models for UBF, ULMA, and UMS, and year-season at slaughter in the models for CW, BF, LMA, and MS), the effects of ultrasound technicians as class variables and the effects of the age in days at ultrasound scanning or at slaughtering as linear covariates, respectively for ultrasound and carcass measures. Heritability estimates obtained from our analyses were 0.37 for UBF, 0.13 for ULMA, 0.27 for UMS, 0.44 for CW, 0.33 for BF, 0.36 for LMA and 0.54 MS, respectively. Genetic correlations were strongly positive between corresponding traits of ultrasound and carcass measures. Genetic correlation coefficient between UBF and BF estimate was 0.938, between ULMA and LMA was 0.767 and between UMS and MS was 0.925. These results suggest that ultrasound measurement traits are genetically similar to carcass measurement traits.
Objective: The objective of the present study was to validate genes and genomic regions associated with carcass weight using a low-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) Chip in Hanwoo cattle breed. Methods: Commercial Hanwoo steers (n = 220) were genotyped with 20K GeneSeek genomic profiler BeadChip. After applying the quality control of criteria of a call rate ${\geq}90%$ and minor allele frequency (MAF) ${\geq}0.01$, a total of 15,235 autosomal SNPs were left for genome-wide association (GWA) analysis. The GWA tests were performed using single-locus mixed linear model. Age at slaughter was fitted as fixed effect and sire included as a covariate. The level of genome-wide significance was set at $3.28{\times}10^{-6}$ (0.05/15,235), corresponding to Bonferroni correction for 15,235 multiple independent tests. Results: By employing EMMAX approach which is based on a mixed linear model and accounts for population stratification and relatedness, we identified 17 and 16 loci significantly (p<0.001) associated with carcass weight for the additive and dominant models, respectively. The second most significant (p = 0.000049) SNP (ARS-BFGL-NGS-28234) on bovine chromosome 4 (BTA4) at 21 Mb had an allele substitution effect of 43.45 kg. Some of the identified regions on BTA2, 6, 14, 22, and 24 were previously reported to be associated with quantitative trait loci for carcass weight in several beef cattle breeds. Conclusion: This is the first genome-wide association study using SNP chips on commercial Hanwoo steers, and some of the loci newly identified in this study may help to better DNA markers that determine increased beef production in commercial Hanwoo cattle. Further studies using a larger sample size will allow confirmation of the candidates identified in this study.
Background: Airway obstruction and the extent of emphysema are reported to be responsible for reduced bone mineral density (BMD). Corresponding to different phenotypes of a pulmonary disease, different severity in extra pulmonary features may exist. We compared BMDs of subjects with or without airway obstruction and/or emphysema and investigated the relationships among BMD, the severity of airway obstruction, and the extent of emphysema. Methods: Using a university hospital database, we reviewed patients over 40 years old who performed spirometry, computed tomography of chest, and measurement of BMD of the lumbar (L) spine. According to the presence or absence of airway obstruction and/or emphysema, four groups were classified. Results: Among a total of 59 subjects, 33 (56%) had osteoporosis. The prevalence of osteoporosis in subjects with no airway obstruction and no emphysema, those with only emphysema, those with only airway obstruction, and those with both airway obstruction and emphysema were 42%, 57%, 64%, and 73%, respectively (p=0.047 by linear-by-linear association). The mean T-scores of BMD of L1 (p=0.032) and L1-4 spines were different among the four groups (p=0.034). Although the T-score of L1 BMD negatively correlated with the extent of emphysema (r=-0.275, p=0.035) and positively with each of body mass index (BMI) (r=0.520, p<0.001), forced expiratory volume in one second ($FEV_1$) (r=0.330, p=0.011), $FEV_1$/forced vital capacity (r=0.409, p=0.001), and forced expiratory flow at 25~75% of FVC ($FEF_{25-75%}$) (r=0.438, p=0.0001), respectively, multiple linear regression analysis indicated that BMI (p<0.001) and $FEF_{25-75%}$ were predictive of BMD (p=0.012). Conclusion: Low BMI and airway obstruction were strongly associated with reduced bone density rather than the extent of emphysema.

This study analyzed the development and growth of folksonomy by examining tags associated with 40 bestsellers on LibraryThing.com in 6-month intervals. It was found that tag values do not decrease but grow in terms of quantity and quality. Accordingly, we examined the major significances of the tags and their potential utilization as an expression of subjects. Our findings were as follows. First, the motivations for tagging can be categorized into personal information for search purposes, self-fulfillment such as sense of achievement, display of emotion and sharing of one's experience with others, or an altruistic objective that emphasizes sociality with a desire that one's actions might provide social benefits. According to our analysis, 74.12% of tags had a social motivation. Second, the total number of tags and the frequency of usage increased with time. Third, the categories that showed a high increase in tag usage were dates of publication and reading, key words, main characters, and book reviews. Tags related to subjects had the highest ratio. Fourth, among Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), multiple genres, key words and main characters were assigned to books, and specific key words and other properties were added as time progressed. There was also a slight increase in the number of tags consistent with LCSH. Fifth, we found that key tags could serve as a compilation of terms that reflects the knowledge base of the corresponding era. Thus, folksonomy should be continuously monitored for its quantitative and qualitative development of the tags to make improvements on its formative disadvantages, and identify internal semantic significance, be actively utilized in conjunction with taxonomy as a flexible compilation of terms that incorporate the history of a specific era.

Substantial genomic diversity has been expected among clinical isolates of H. pylori. We have suggested that the two complete H. pylori genomes already sequenced may be insufficient for providing a discriminatory tool for typing clinical isolates as well as an insight into the genomic diversity, which enable to establish strategy for control of H. pylori infection. In this study, we determine the nucleotide sequence of the entire genome of Korean strain 51 and compare it with two reported genomic sequences to suggest validity for extensive genomic sequencing of H. pylori. The genome of H. pylori 51 consists of a circular chromosome with a size of 1,591,297 bp, which is corresponding to $95.4\%\;and\;96.8\%$ of the 26695 and J99 chromosome length, respectively. We predict that there are 1,454 open reading frames (ORFs) in 51, representing $91.4\%\;and\;97.2\%$ of the reported numbers of ORF of 26695 and J99, respectively. In contrast to 26695 and J99 that have 123 and 65 strain-specific genes, respectively, of the 1,454 genes, only 39 genes are unique to 51. Differences in genomic organization between 51 and each foreign strain were greater than between 2 foreign strains in pair wise entire sequence alignments by BLASTN. Particularly, the extent of genomic rearrangement observed between 51 and 26695 is higher than between 51 and J99. Multiple sequence alignment of orthologous genes among 3 strains showed that 51 is genetically closer to 26695 rather than J99. Phylogenetic analysis of nonsynonymous and synonymous mutation indicated J99 has the longest branch length in the unrooted phylogenetic tree, suggesting that J99 has higher mutation rate than the other 2 strains.

Many crops including cereals, tuber crops, feeds, and turf grasses are often damaged by various environmental stresses such as drought, salt, cold, and high temperature, causing the reduction of their productivity. Plants are sessile and cannot escape from environmental stresses. Thus, plants evolve in the direction of overcoming the environmental stresses. Some plant genes such as ARF, ABI3, NAC, HSF, and WRKY are known to respond to environmental stresses as they transcriptionally regulate the stress response pathways. For example, the OsWRKY76 gene contributes to the enhanced resistance to low temperatures and pathogenic infections. The AtWRKY28 also plays a role in environmental stresses. Zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) is popularly grown for gardens and golf courses. However, the function of the WRKY gene, another environmental stress-related gene, is not known in zoysiagrass. In this study, the ZjWRKY3 and ZjWRKY7 genes with one shared WRKY domain have been isolated in zoysiagrass. The expression of these genes increased in response to low temperature, drought, and salt stresses. Furthermore, the infection of the brown patch-causing Rhozoctonia solani induced the expression of ZjWRKY3 and ZjWRKY7. The corresponding proteins bind to the W-box of the Zjchi promoter, possibly regulating their transcriptions. The researchers suggest that the ZjWRKY3 and ZjWRKY7 genes transcriptionally regulate abiotic and biotic stress related downstream genes.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the genotype frequencies of interleukin 10 (IL-10) gene polymorphisms and to investigate their association with the risk of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in preterm Korean infants. Methods: Two hundred fourteen preterm infants born at Ewha Womans University Mok Dong Hospital between November 2003 and July 2008 were studied. The cord blood of preterm neonates and the corresponding maternal blood were analyzed by PCR for IL-10 gene (IL-10 -1082A/G, -819T/C, and -592A/C) polymorphisms. The clinical data of patients were collected retrospectively by chart review. Results: The genotype frequencies of IL-10 genes in Korean mothers with preterm infants differ from other reports. The prevalence of two promoter SNPs of the IL-10 cytokine gene was similar but none had the IL-10-1082GG homozygote. Multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated the risk of RDS to be significantly lower in the infants of the mothers with an IL-10-592AC/CC genotype than in those with an AA genotype (P=0.033). The risk of RDS was significantly lower in the mother with an IL-10-819TC/CC genotype than in those with a TT genotype (P=0.030). However, IL-10 polymorphisms in the cord blood were not significantly different in preterm infants with RDS compared with the preterm infants without RDS. When we compared the incidence of RDS and each IL-10A-1082G/T-819C/A-592C haplotype, the ACC haplotype had a protective effect on RDS (P=0.007). Conclusion: We conclude that the maternal IL-10-592A/C and IL-10-819T/C polymorphisms may have a role in the development of the RDS in preterm infants.
This study aims to develop a multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) approach for flood vulnerability assessment which considers uncertainty. The flood vulnerability assessment procedure consists of three steps: (1) use the Delphi process to determine the criteria and their corresponding weights-the adopted criteria represent the social, economic, and environmental circumstances related to floods, (2) construct a fuzzy data matrix for the flood vulnerability criteria using fuzzification and standardization, and (3) set priorities based on the number of assessed vulnerabilities. This study uses a modified fuzzy TOPSIS method based on ${\alpha}$-level sets which considers various uncertainties related to weight derivation and crisp data aggregation. Further, Spearman's rank correlation analysis is used to compare the rankings obtained using the proposed method with those obtained using fuzzy TOPSIS with fuzzy data, TOPSIS, and WSM methods with crisp data. The fuzzy TOPSIS method based on ${\alpha}$-cut level sets is found to have a higher correlation rate than the other methods, and thus, it can reduce the difference of the rankings which uses crisp and fuzzy data. Thus, the proposed flood vulnerability assessment method can effectively support flood management policies.
