  • A simple numerical modeling technique is proposed for the analysis of framed tube structures with multiple internal tubes. The structures are analysed using a continuum approach in which each tube is individually modelled by a tube beam that accounts for the flexural and shear deformations, as well as the shear lag effects. By simplifying assumptions regarding the form of strain distributions in external and internal tubes, the structural behaviours is reduced to the solution of a single second order linear differential equation. The numerical analysis uses the variational approach on the basis of the minimum potential energy priniciple. Three framed-tube sructures with single, two and three internal tubes are analysed to verify the applicability and reliability of the proposed method.

  • A simple numerical modelling technique is proposed for estimating the shear stress distribution in beams of framed tube structures with multiple internal tubes. The structures are analysed using a continuum approach in which each tube is individually modelled by a tube beam that accounts for the flexural and shear deformations, as well as the shear lag effects. The method idealises the discrete tubes-in-tube structures as an assemblage of equivalent multiple beams, each composed of orthotropic plate panels. The numerical analysis of shear stress is based on the elastic theory in conjunction with the minimum potential energy principle. By simplifying assumptions regarding the form of strain distributions in external and internal tubes, the shear stress distributions are expressed in terms of a series of linear functions of the second moments of area of the structures and the corresponding geometric and material properties, as well as the applied loads. The simplicity and accuracy of the proposed method are demonstrated through the solutions of three numerical examples.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the heat transfer enhancement by the multiple tripping wires installed on a flat plate. Naphthalene sublimation technique is used to measure the local mass transfer coefficients, and then heat transfer coefficients are calculated using heat/mass transfer analogy. Experiments are performed for the developed and developing flow conditions. Local and average heat transfer coefficients from the flat plate with three tripping wires are compared with those of no and one tripping wire. Remarkable heat transfer enhancements are found resulting from the boundary layer separation by the tripping wires, especially in the laminar boundary layer.

  • In this study, we investigated the differences of mapping understanding and the types of mapping errors by the levels of students' cognitive/affective variables and the relationships between mapping understanding and these variables in learning 'concentration and reaction rate' with analogy. After administering the tests regarding logical thinking ability, visual imagery ability, analogical reasoning ability, self efficacy, and need for cognition as pretests, students learned with analogy. Then, students' familiarity and mapping understanding were examined. Analyses of the results revealed that the scores of the mapping understanding for the students with higher levels of all cognitive/affective variables except visual imagery ability and familiarity were significantly higher than those for the students with lower levels. The differences in the types of the mapping errors such as overmapping, failure to map, impossible mapping, artificial mapping, mismapping, rash mapping, and retention of a base feature were also found by the levels of students' cognitive and affective variables. The scores of students' mapping understanding were positively correlated with those of all cognitive and affective variables. The results of multiple regression analysis indicated that students' science achievement, logical thinking ability, and familiarity were significant predictors of mapping understanding. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • Fatigure crack growth from surface defects is one of the most important subjects for the evaluation and the assurance of safety in pressure vessels, piping systems, ship hulls and other various structures. This paper attempts to analysis some practical or general problems such as the estimation of crack growth life to penetrate the plate thickness, based on fatigure crack growth from a single surface flaw and the interaction of multiple flaws. An experiment on the coalescence of multiple undercuts was carried out under cyclic tension condition as a attempt to the analysis of multiple crack problems. It is noted that the fracture strength is characterized by the analogy to that in a single crack growth.

  • A simple numerical modelling technique is proposed for estimating the shear lag effects of framed-tube system with multiple internal tubes. The tube(s)-in-tube structure is analysed by using an analogy approach in which each tube is individually modelled by a beam that can accounts for the flexural and shear deformations, as well as the shear lag effects. The numerical analysis is based on the minimum potential energy principle in conjunction with the variational approach. The shear lag phenomenon of such structures is studied with additional bending stresses. Structural parameters governing the shear lag behaviour in tube(s)-in-tube structures are also investigated through thirty-three numerical examples.

  • This paper adopts and investigates the non-dominated sorting approach for extending the single-objective Cuckoo Search (CS) into a multi-objective framework. The proposed approach uses an archive composed of primary and secondary population to select and keep the non-dominated solutions at each generation instead of pairwise analogy used in the original Multi-objective Cuckoo Search (MOCS). Our simulations show that such a low computational complexity approach can enrich CS to incorporate multi-objective needs instead of considering multiple eggs for cuckoos used in the original MOCS. The proposed MOCS is tested on a set of multi-objective optimization problems and two well-studied engineering design optimization problems. Compared to MOCS and some other available multi-objective algorithms such as NSGA-II, our approach is found to be competitive while benefiting simplicity. Moreover, the proposed approach is simpler and is capable of finding a wide spread of solutions with good coverage and convergence to true Pareto optimal fronts.

  • Intercarrier interference (ICI) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, which causes substantial performance degradation in time-varying fading channels, is analyzed. An equivalent spreading code formulation is derived based on the analogy of OFDM and code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. Techniques as linear multiuser detection in CDMA systems are applied to suppress the ICI in OFDM systems. The performance of linear detection, measured using multiuser efficiency and asymptotic multiuser efficiency, is analyzed given the assumption of perfect channel state information (CSI), which serves as an upper bound for the performance of practical systems. For systems without CSI, time domain and frequency domain channel estimation based linear detectors are proposed. The performance gains and robustness of a linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) filter over a traditional filter (TF) and matched filter (MF) in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime are demonstrated with numerical simulation results.

  • In the present study, a numerical simulation is performed for the flow through a cooling fan. The computation was performed by using commercial code, STAR-CD. A rotating fan was simulated by rotational motions using MRF (Multiple Rotating Reference Frame) in a steady-state analysis and sliding interface (rotating meshes) in an unsteady-state analysis. The results of numerical computation were in good agreement with experimental data. In order to calculate the acoustic signal, the unsteady flow-field was firstly calculated. The acoustics of the fan is calculated by using acoustic analogy based on the unsteady flow-field. The predicted acoustic signal shows the characteristics of the uneven bladed-fan.
