  • Experimental work in underwater acoustic communications using passive phase conjugation has shown that the demodulation error depends on the relative drift rate between the source and receiver [Rouseff et al., IEEE J. Oceanic Eng. 26, 821-831 (2001)]. The observed effect involves the mismatch between the initial impulse response and the subsequent response after the source or receiver has changed locations. In the present work, the effect of drifting source is analyzed by numerical simulations and compared to the experimental results. The communications bit error rate is qualified as a function of drift rate, drifting direction, and source-receiver range.

  • This paper analyzes decorrelating detector for synchronous packet CDMA communications where a set of quasiorthogonal code waveforms are generated from a common code by assigning distinct initial code phases to all users. In this analysis, we characterize the residual multiple-access interference (MAI) caused by possibletiming offsets when synchronous and simultanceous packet transmissions are on the reverse link of centralize networks. Also, to show feasibility of decorrelating detector employing the common code, we further investigate its robustness against the multipath channel. It is demonstrated that the decorrelating detector greatly reduces the residual MAI to the order of N$^{-2}$ , N number of chips/bit, and yields significant performance gain compared to the single user detector.

  • In this paper, a beam ID preamble (BIDP) technique, where a beam ID is transmitted in the physical layer, is proposed for efficient beam training in millimeter-wave cellular communication systems. To facilitate beam ID detection in a multicell environment with multiple beams, a BIDP is designed such that a beam ID is mapped onto a Zadoff-Chu sequence in association with its cell ID. By analyzing the correlation property of the BIDP, it is shown that multiple beams can be transmitted simultaneously with the proposed technique with minimal interbeam interference in a multicell environment, where beams have different time delays due to propagation delay or multipath channel delay. Through simulation with a spatial channel model, it is shown that the best beam pairs can be found with a significantly reduced processing time of beam training in the proposed technique.

  • WiBro system provides reliable broadband communication services for mobile and portable subcribers. It allows interference-free reception under the conditions of multipath propagation and transmission errors. Thus, powerful channel-error correction ability Is required. CC/CTC Decoder which Is mandatory for WiBro system needs lots of computations for real-time operation. So, it is desired to design a CC/CTC Decoder having highly optimized hardware scheme for low latency operation under high data rates. This paper proposes an efficient CC/CTC Decoder structure for high data rate WiBro system. Particularly, the proposed CTC Decoder architecture reduces decoding delay by applying pipelining and multiple decoding blocks. Simulation results show that reduction of about 80% of processing time is enabled with the proposed CC/CTC Decoder despite of increase in are.

  • In outdoor visible light communication channels and LED road illumination communications for the intelligent transport systems (ITS), inter symbol interference (ISI) due to multipath propagation prevents high data rate transmission. Indoor wireless optical communication systems utilizing white LED lights and on the road illumination have been studying about it. Generally, plural lights are installed in room and considered to the traffic information system using existing LED traffic lights. Therefore, their optical path difference must be considered. In this paper, the influence of an optical path difference has been investigated and two approaches against this problem are introduced. One uses on-off keying, return-to-zero (OOK-RZ) coding and the other uses optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM).

  • In this paper, the bit-error-ratio (BER) performances of Digital Radio Mondiale Plus (DRM+) system which stand for the European standard to bring analogue FM radio to digital radio in Band-II(30-170 MHz) are evaluated under multipath fading channel models used in Band-II and the adjacent channel interference (ACI) caused by FM signal. From the simulation results, the DRM+ system shows robust performances under time-varying channel environments even though the speed of a vehicle is equal to 300km/h. And it is shown that the frequency diversity, determined by delay spread of multipath fading channel, increases the coding gain of the DRM+ system with an increase of delay spread. In addition, to guarantee the BER performance of 10-4 for DRM+ system with ACI due to FM signal, the simulation results show that the desired signal-to-ACI power ratio must be more than -30 dB when the carrier frequency distance is 150 kHz.

  • In this paper, the reverse-link performance of synchronous DS-CDMA cellular networks is investigated in Rician multipath fading environments. The system's performance is evaluated in terms of the achievable average bit error rate BER) and the user capacities of two different network layouts, namely those of a uniform grid of hexagonal multiple cells and a single isolated cell. In the multiple-cell scenario, the impact of the other cells' interference on the attainable capacity of the synchronous DS-CDMA uplink is investigated. Upon comparing both networks to a conventional asynchronous CDMA system, we demonstrate an achievable user capacity gain of $25\%$ to $56\%$ for synchronous uplink transmissions over that of the corresponding asynchronous transmission scenario at BER = $10^{-3}$.

  • The adaptive modulation along with SFBC transmit diversity is a very effective method to increase the capacity of an OFDM system. However, severe performance degradation is resulted when inter-symbol interference is applied due to frequency-selective fading in mobile communications. In this paper, we have proposed and analyzed an OFDM system with SFBC transmit diversity and adaptive modulation scheme based on pre-equalization methods, in order to increase the data transmission rate in the downlink without much increase in system complexity. By introducing subchannel grouping and the pre-equalization method among adjacent subchannels, we could enhance the efficiency of the adaptive modulation a lot. By computer simulation, it has been proven that the proposed schemes show a better BER and throughput performance than the conventional schemes under severely time-varying multipath fading channel.

  • In the underwater communications, transmitted acoustic signal is corrupted by interference from multipath. A parametric array transducer is capable of radiating a narrow beam with very low sidelobe levels. In certain cases, the parametric array transducer can help the multipath problem. To improve the performance of the underwater communications, the statistical signal processing methods will be required. In the paper, the communication system using a parametric array transducer was demonstrated. To detect the received signal of the communication system based on the on-off keying, the maximum likelihood method using averaged signal for a particular window size is used. The communication system has GUI using LebVIEW which allows the user to change the parameter. The GUI can also be easily modified based on the characteristics of a parametric array transducer. The implemented system can effectively evaluate the performance of the parametric array transducer.
