  • Market structure analysis is a very useful tool to analyze the competition boundary of the brand or the company. But most of the studies in market structure analysis, the concern lies in nondurable goods such as candies, soft drink and etc. because of the their availability of the data. In the field of durable goods, the limitation of the data availability and the repurchase time period constrain the study. In the analysis of the automobile market, those of views might be more persuasive. The purpose of this study is to analyze the structure of automobile market based on some idea suggested by prior studies. Usually the buyers of the automobile tend to buy upper tier when they buy in the next time. That kind of behavior make it impossible to analyze the structure of automobile market under the level of automobile model. For that reason I tried to analyze the market structure in the brand or company level. In this study, consideration data was used for market structure analysis. The reasons why we used the consideration data are summarized as following. Firstly, as the repurchase time cycle is too long, brand switching data which is used for the market analysis of nondurable good is not avaliable. Secondly, as we mentioned, the buyers of the automobile tend to buy upper tier when they buy in the next time. We used survey data collected in the U.S.A. market in the year of 2005 through questionaire. The sample size was 8,291. The number of brand analyzed in this study was 9 among 37 which was being sold in U.S.A. market. Their market share was around 50%. The brands considered were BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Honda, Mercedes, and Toyota. ratio was derived from frequency of the consideration set. Actually the frequency is different from the brand switch concept. In this study to compute the ratio, the frequency of the consideration set was used like a frequency of brand switch for convenience. The study can be divided into 2 steps. The first step is to build hypothetical market structures. The second step is to choose the best structure based on the hypothetical market structures, Usually logit analysis is used for the choice best structure. In this study we built 3 hypothetical market structure. They are type-cost, cost-type, and unstructured. We classified the automobile into 5 types, sedan, SUV(Sport Utility Vehicle), Pickup, Mini Van, and Full-size Van. As for purchasing cost, we classified it 2 groups based on the median value. The median value was $28,800. To decide best structure among them, maximum likelihood test was used. Resulting from market structure analysis, we find that the automobile market of USA is hierarchically structured in the form of 'automobile type - purchasing cost'. That is, result showed that automobile buyers considered function or usage first and purchasing cost next. This study has some limitations in the analysis level and variable selection. First, in this study only type of the automobile and purchasing cost were as attributes considered for purchase. Considering other attributes is very needful. Because of the attributes considered, only 3 hypothetical structure could be analyzed. Second, due to the data, brand level analysis was tried. But model level analysis would be better because automobile buyers consider model not brand. To conduct model level study more cases should be obtained. That is for acquiring the better practical meaning, brand level analysis should be conducted when we consider the actual competition which occurred in the real market. Third, the variable selection for building nested logit model was very limited to some avaliable data. In spite of those limitations, the importance of this study lies in the trial of market structure analysis of durable good.

  • Although the term 'family business' is relatively new, this style of business is universal. An Unusual feature that must be noted, is that even though it is a common style of business is not clearly defined. The purpose of this study is to identify the different family participation patterns, and the variables that effect different types of participation. '1997 Daewoo Panel Data' was used. Some descriptive statistics and a multinomial logit model were employed for the analysis. The standard type of business focused on in this study was a family owned and operated 'ma and pa' typed business and the sample was limited to households where one or both of the partners involved in a family owned and operated business. The main resets obtained from this sample were as follows: 1. Personal characteristics such as respondents' gender, age and educational level were important variables that effected the participation of family members in the business. As can be seen in the gender analysis, family businesses owned by men showed all available patterns of family operated businesses in relatively high numbers. A large percentage of businesses owned women were of self-employed pattern. According to the analysis by age and educational level, young people with a high level of education tend to managed their small businesses by employing others rather than utilising the self-employed or family operated pattern. 2. While big families showed a high percentage of a combination pattern of a family-run, and ordinary employer/employee company, relatively small families usually opted for purely family-run businesses. Whether the family have children under 6 or not, and the number of children under 6 did net significantly effect to the patterns of the family system of small family businesses. 3. The size, location and kind of family business also effected participation patterns of the family members significantly. These results suggest that further study will be required to gain more exact and meaningful information to help Korean family businesses.

  • This study focus on unemployment and nonparticipation of youth. By dividing youth nonparticipants into 'house work and child care', 'studying and training', 'the others' categories, we estimate the potential wages with selectivity bias model and analyse the factors of choosing unemployment or nonparticipation with multinomial logit model. The differences between the potential market wage and the desired wage of the groups of 'studying and training', 'the others' in the nonparticipants are greater than those of the unemployment group. In the case of the man and lower age, and low schooling the differences of potential and desire wage are larger than woman and higher age, and high schooling. In the choice of unemployment and nonparticipation, man and higher age, and householder, and holder of qualification are not likely to opt nonparticipation. The experience of job lower the rate of probability to choose employment, but raise the rate of probability to choose unemployment and nonparticipation. These results mean that the quality of youth employment is very inferior.

  • This study aims to analyze the determinants of residential location choice for the inter-urban migrants in the Seoul metropolitan area. In doing so, we have built a discrete choice model, using household sample data from the 2010 Korea Population and Housing Census. We classified households, which made a intra-urban movement during the last five years, into four groups: 1) movers from Seoul (central city) to Gyunggi-Incheon (suburban), 2) movers from Gyunggi-Incheon to Seoul, 3) Intra-Seoul movers, and 4) intra-Gyunggi-Incheon movers. The analysis findings can be summarized as follows. First, significant differences in the determinants of residential location choice were found among different types of movers. Second, movers from Gyunggi- Incheon to Seoul were likely to choose small housings with fewer rooms, indicating that their housing choices were forced rather than voluntary due to high housing prices in Seoul. Third, all types of movers have a high preference for the neighborhood with a good accessibility by public transit including subway. Lastly, neighborhood amenity was also an important attracting factors for the intra-urban migrants in Seoul.

  • Using the data from the KLIPS, this study categorizes unemployed women into the four mutually exclusive groups according to the two criteria (whether to have intention to work and the comparison of reservation and market wages), and investigates factors affecting the status of the unemployment of women. Heckman's sample selection regression and multinomial logit are applied for the estimation. The major results are: the proportion of unemployed women who do not have intension to work or whose reservation wages are greater than expected market wages is about 50%, and the proportion of unemployed women who have intension to work or whose reservation wages are less than expected market wages is about 50%; second, human capital, burden of child raising and household production, household economic status, the variables related to work experience are found to be the factors affecting unemployment status of women.

  • A transit assignment model can forecast the behaviors of transit users. thereby playing an important role In the evaluation of transit policies. Most existing transit assignment models are based on the models for passenger cars; therefore they cannot reflect the specific characteristics of transit modes. In addition most of the existing models are based on a single transit mode (bus or rail), and they cannot forecast the behaviors of transit users in a changing mass transportation system. The goal of this study is to overcome these problems with the exiting models and to develop a more realistic model. The newly developed model is based on mixed transit modes and is a stochastic model that can reflect the different preferences of each transit user for travel time and transfering. Data gathered from the Seoul metropolitan area's smart card are used to calibrate this model. This study is expected to be used for the evaluation of transportation policies and to attribute the development of transit revitalization strategies.

  • This paper explores the determinants of re-employment of retired military personnel who served more than ten years in Korea. Recently, the re-employment rate of veterans is less than 30%. Considering the reduction in military forces in future, this very low rate of re-employment may be one of important social and economic problem. Using a survey and econometric analyses, we generate several important results. First, spouses' income is higher in the group who chose to run their own business than in the group who decided to become salary workers. Second, those who gave economic activities had longer the period of military service, higher ranks, and higher rate of being in bad health. Third, the longer the military service period is, the shorter the period of job search. And those who not taking the program of vocational guidance have short search period. If, however, one was more educated or one served longer in Seoul area, then she is more likely to have a longer search period. These results imply that the current important factors in government policies for veterans such as vocational guidance programs, information for employment, and military experience should be improved to be more oriented to the requirements of employers.

  • Using the data of 'middle-and old-aged people' in the 6th year(2003) of KLIPS(Korea Labor and Income Panel Study), this study compared entirely retired men's income source and amount of income divided by the time of retirement and analyzed the determinants of main income source and amount of income level using Multinomial Logit Analysis and Tobit Analysis. The results of these were as following; First, Entirely retired men has average 1.27 income source and the amount of income from main income source is positioned at 85% of total income. This result indicates the lack of variety to get opportunities of income sources for the living and also means high risk associated with the entirely retired men if he looses the main income source. Second, most of income source of entirely retired men is spouse's earned income or private income transfers, however, if we divide those as timing of retirement and characters of each individual, it is represented that the most of income source is differentiated by the position at labor market during work life and the opportunity for building the wealth, and the possibility of obtaining public pension and public support. Third, the income level depends on what sort of income source the retired men has, this shows that there is not a strong relationship between obtaining a Income source and gaining above the certain level of income.

  • The multinomial logit model, based on random utility maximization (RUM) theory, has been the predominant model used in travel mode choice contexts. In this paper, the travel mode choice model based on random regret minimization (RRM) theory is proposed as an alternative to the RUM model, and the applicability of the RRM model is examined. The presented model is applied to the case of inter-city travel mode choice in Korea. The empirical results show that the RUM model and RRM model have parameters that are consistent with the intuition. The goodness of fit statistics in the RRM model improved compared with the results of the RUM model. Consequently, these results show the possibility of using the RRM model in the context of travel mode choice.

  • This paper investigates whether intra-household bargaining power affects couples' caregiving decisions during instances of competing parental demands for assistance. The primary focus is on examining how partners' bargaining power influences the relative allocation of time resources between parents and parents-in-law, assuming that children prefer to transfer caregiving resources toward their own parents over their parents-in-law. The findings in this study reject the bargaining theory that couple's parental care behavior results from a bargaining process between the husband and the wife. More specifically, the results did not clearly show that children prefer to transfer caregiving resources toward their own parents over their parents-in-law. Decision-making power, measured by final decision-making authority, also failed to affect the relative care transfers.
