  • In the framework of universal multimedia access, one challenge for video transmission (communication) is to deliver video content through heterogeneous network channels matching the diversity of client devices. As one of the many adaptation methods, media transcoding is commonly considered. Particularly, FD (Frame Dropping)/CD Coefficient Dropping) transcoding is used due to the low computational complexity and simple implementation. In this scheme, CD is simply implemented by truncating the high frequency AC DCT coefficient bits. But, the CD error tends to be propagated within single GOV. In this paper, we derive the distortion relationships between CD error and propagation error, and investigate the error characteristics by computer simulations. The CD error characteristics can be effectively used in the FD/CD transcoding scheme.

  • Owing to the improved wireless communication technologies, it is possible to provide streaming service of multimedia with PDAs and mobile phones in addition to desktop PCs. Since mobile client devices have low computing power and low network bandwidth due to wireless network, the transcoding technology to adapt media for mobile client devices considering their characteristics is necessary. Transcoding servers transcode the source media to the target media within corresponding grades and provide QoS in real-time. In particular, an effective load balancing policy for transcoding servers is inevitable to support QoS for large scale mobile users. In this paper, the resource weighted load distribution policy is proposed for a fair load balance and a more scalable performance in cluster-based transcoding servers. Our proposed policy is based on the resource weighted table and number of maximum supported users, which are pre-computed for each pre-defined grade. We implement the proposed policy on cluster-based transcoding servers and evaluate its fair load distribution and scalable performance with the number of transcoding servers.

  • The perforrnance and portability of mobile applications can be greatly increased by adopting proxy modiles which exists between the conventional system and the device. When mobile devices collaborate with the conventional computers, there are problems to address: a battery life problem, limited input and output methods, and intermittent wireless connection. Those issues are magnified in the multimedia collaboration environment since it works in a real-time condition and the size of the message in the system is big in many cases. Additionally, because multimedia collaboration system softwares are too heavy and complex for mobile devices, it is veη hard to integrate them with conventional systems. In this paper, we describe our design and its implementation of a novel approach to map events (i.e. messages) using a proxy for mobile applications. We adopt a proxy to provide a content adaptation (i.e. transcoding) where the message contents are customized. Also, we design a mobile version publish/subscribe system to provide communication service for mobile device in loosely coupled and flexible manner. We present our empirical results which show that our design can be efficiently implemented and integrated with a conventional multimedia collaboration system.

  • In this paper, we investigate the relationship of bitrate and quantization parameter needed for the trans-coding method that makes the H.264 bitstream of a particular bitrate to the other titrate. Also we propose the new method in order to transcode the titrate between H.264 video coded bitstreams. The proposed transcoding method updates the model parameters from previous picture or slice by using the approximated relationship of bitrate and quantization step-size and finds the target quantization step-size, and then generates the target titrate by simple coding processing just after requantization. Therefore, the proposed method does not need the complex bitrate control and converts to the target titrate by simple implementation. From simulation, we can see that the proposed method transcodes exactly to an assigned target bitrate for the four test sequences with different their characteristics.

  • As wireless network technology has advanced, demands for multimedia contents through mobile environment have tendered to upward. Since network situation is changing every moment and types of user terminals are diverse, it is difficult for a content provider to consider network situation and type of user terminal to provide multimedia contents. As one solution, transcoding techniques have been proposed, but those have much complexity. In this paper, in order to reduce computational complexity, we propose a fast mode decision using input modes, motion vectors, and residual energies which are obtained from input bitstream for 2:1 down-scaling spatial transcoding application. The proposed method reduces processing time in mode decision by restricting possible mode types based on input information. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves about 2.66 times improvement in encoding time compared to the normal encoding process while the PSNR is degraded by about 0.04dB, and bit-rate is increased by 1.6%.

  • The transcoding is a solution which is able to adapt to heterogeneous clients of requesting a different playback rate of multimedia data. Thus, The transcoding needs decoding and encoding. In general, previous studies to reduce complexity have a problem, the degradation of visual quality On the contrary, previous studies to reduce the degradation of visual quality lead to heavy computation. Thus, many researchers have studied a solution between the complexity and the degradation of visual quality. But until now, most researches of this region have dealt with the transcoder itself, such researches about a server's assistance to improve the performance of transcoder is rarely studied. In case of servicing multimedia data to heterogeneous clients which have low capabilities, the assistance of server side is able to reduce frames with processing in the transcoder and improve the performance of the transcoder. Thus in this paper, we propose the frame-skipping transcoder system architecture that takes into consideration transcoder and server side to reduce the complexity of the transcoder.

  • The primary goal of this paper is to facilitate the rate-distortion control in compressed domain, without introducing a full decoding and re-encoding system in pixel domain. For this aim, the error propagation behavior over several frame-sequences due to DCT coefficients-drop is investigated on the basis of statistical and empirical properties. Then, such properties are used to develop a simple estimation model for the CD distortion accounting for the characteristics of the underlying coded-frame. Experimental results show that the proposed model allows us to effectively control rate-distortions into coded-frames over different kinds of video sequences.

  • The transcoding is a method which converts a multimedia stream to an adaptive format, such as frame rate and resolution, that can be played in the mobile devices. Due to the heavy consumption of CPU power for transcoding, the server in charge cannot supply all streams requested from clients if it is already occupied by several streams. The load balancing among proxies is a common approach for solving such problem. In addition to collaborative works for load balancing, the mobility must be taken into account in the mobile environments. Thus, the wired-network based algorithm is not suitable for the streams service in the mobile environments. In this paper, we propose an alternative scheme for cooperative proxy architecture that considers the case in which mobile devices are moving over other zones.
