Today it is critical for all engineers to have the capability of interacting in teams with members of different background and to meet the challenges that they will encounters in their careers. To satisfy such needs multidisciplinary engineering-design courses are attracting more attentions than ever in the engineering education community. In this paper we analyze the learning effectiveness of interdisciplinary design teams in an engineering design course in Dongguk University. The comparison analysis between monodisciplinary teams and interdisciplinary ones demonstrates higher learning effectiveness of interdisciplinary teams. In addition, the student evaluation of learning effectiveness points out that communication skill is one of the most important factors for a successful project. Such results show that multidisciplinary design courses must gain wider acceptance in engineering education and engineering students must have more chances to experience multidisciplinary teamwork.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of an individualized educational program by multidisciplinary staffs on the need for caring among patients with radiotherapy. Methods: A quasi experimental study with one group was designed to examine the effect. A total of 48 adult patients were recruited from a university hospital in G-city, Korea from July, 2006 to June, 2007. The level of patients' need for caring during radiotherapy was assessed at the pre- and post-education by a trained research assistant. The level of patients' need for caring on radiotherapy was measured with a 20-item questionnaire. Results: Paired t-test showed that the level of patients' need was reduced at the post-test compared to pre-test (t=3.40, p=0.002). The level of need was higher among the older than 65 yr (F=4.82, p=0.034), and patients who had education years less than 10 yr (F=4.40, p=0.042) and not a spouse (F=5.97, p=0.019) at the pre-test, while there were no difference according to participants' characteristics at the post-test. Conclusions: This multidisciplinary and individualized education program was effective on reducing the level of need for caring during radiotherapy. Therefore, for long-term self-management, further educational strategies based on patients' needs through multidisciplinary teamwork need to be developed and applied.
In order to effectively, and accurately assess seawater intrusion in coastal area, multidisciplinary data including geophysical, well logging, and hydrogeochemical data should be managed in systematical way. Such systematical management of data is critical key to improve the re-usability of the data as well as the accuracy of the assessment by means of providing a method of synthetic analysis. Therefore, for systematical management of multidisciplinary data in seawater intrusion problem, we have developed a database management system and 3-D visualization interface based on geographic information system in this, study. All geophysical survey, well logging, hydrochemical, as well as drilling, data are classified as attribute data using Microsoft Access, and joined with spatial information based on ArcView. The database management system and 3-D visualization interface to handle these data, also, developed using the script language of ArcView. We think the development of database and 3-D visualization system will improve the efficiency of data management, user-friendliness of data access, and accuracy of data analysis.
This study was designed to develop the life moking cessation program with multidisciplinary approach using the Bandura's theory of self-efficacy and confirm the effect of it on the self-efficacy and smoking amount in college students. For this purpose non-equivalent control group, pretest-posttest design was used. The participating subjects in this study were 46 male college freshmen, 23 in experimental and 23 in control group. The experimental group received the 8 sessions of lecture and small group discussions for 4 weeks and a telephone coaching program for a period of 8 weeks. The control group received 5 sessions of lecture without further treatments. The data was collected from March 15 to June 11, 1999, and analysed by SAS/PC program with $\chi$$^2$test, simple t, paired t test. The results were as follows. 1. The score of self-efficacy was significantly increased over time in the experimental group than those of the control group. 2. The amount of urine cotinine was decreased over time in the experimental group, number of cigarettes smoked a day were significantly decreased, and they were significantly less than those of the control group. In conclusion it was found that the Life Smoking Cessation Program with Multidisciplinary Approach was an effective nursing intervention for increasing self efficacy and reducing the amount of smoking in male college students. Therefore, future smoking cessation programs should always consider the concept of self-efficacy and ways to positively reinforce it.

In this paper, the conceptual design procedure and results of Earth observation satellite through Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) are described. The conceptual design equations for major parameters are developed based on the established database of Earth observation satellite so far. The MDO conceptual design tool for Earth observation satellite was developed by applying the Collaborative Optimization (CO) architecture amongst several MDO architecture techniques available today. The objective for this research was set to minimize the total mass of satellite as well as satisfy all design constraints by utilizing the Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) algorithm. Eventually the effectiveness of MDO conceptual design tool was verified through proposing a comparison between the conceptual design results with MDO applied and the design specification of ASNARO-1 & IKONOS-2 Earth observation satellite.
Purpose: It is difficult to provide accurate diagnosis and proper treatment for vascular anomalies, because vascular anomalies have a wide spectrum of lesion with various symptoms. Furthermore, vascular anomalies often require the services of a wide range of specialists. So, many patients have been discouraged by the lack of expertise and treatment options available to them. In this study, we aimed to describe the scope of the Vascular Malformation clinic (VAM clinic), a multidisciplinary clinic for hemangioma and vascular malformation patients and investigate of diagnostic accuracy of VAM clinic. Methods: 68 patients have included in a retrospective, medical record review study in the VAM clinic from may 2002 to august 2009. Data included the types of diagnoses of patients seen in the clinic, locations of lesions, comparison of accuracy of diagnoses at other clinic and initial diagnoses at VAM clinic and types of recommended treatments. Results: Initial diagnosis at VAM clinic showed 94.2% accuracy, while diagnosis at other clinic only showed 12.5% accuracy. Head and neck is most frequently occurred lesions in patients of VAM clinic. And VAM clinic is able to provide various and proper treatments to patients. Conclusion: Hemangiomas and vascular malformations can present with various medical problems. VAM clinic, the multidisciplinary clinic provided accurate diagnoses and proper treatments to patients.

This paper presents the second part of the modeling for the strap combined footings, this part shows a mathematical model for design of strap combined footings subject to axial load and moments in two directions to each column considering the soil real pressure acting on the contact surface of the footing for one and/or two property lines of sides opposite restricted, the pressure is presented in terms of an axial load, moment around the axis "X" and moment around the axis "Y" to each column, and the methodology is developed using the principle that the derived of the moment is the shear force. The first part shows the optimal contact surface for the strap combined footings to obtain the most economical dimensioning on the soil (optimal area). The classic model considers an axial load and a moment around the axis "X" (transverse axis) applied to each column, i.e., the resultant force from the applied loads is located on the axis "Y" (longitudinal axis), and its position must match with the geometric center of the footing, and when the axial load and moments in two directions are presented, the maximum pressure and uniform applied throughout the contact surface of the footing is considered the same. A numerical example is presented to obtain the design of strap combined footings subject to an axial load and moments in two directions applied to each column. The mathematical approach suggested in this paper produces results that have a tangible accuracy for all problems and it can also be used for rectangular and T-shaped combined footings.

This paper presents a framework, MADAM(Multidisciplinary Analysis and Design for Advanced Mobility). For the actual UAM operation, not only aircraft performances but also demand, cost and flight scenarios are in connection; the overall framework is essential for the multidisciplinary design. In this study, the framework is developed and introduced. Demand and cost analysis of Gimpo-Samseong line in the Seoul area using the framework is conducted as an example result. Also, future ticket prices are estimated by applying changes in the aspects of major cost components and the price, ₩76,000, is calculated with the target for maximizing the total profit in the year 2035.
'Technological convergence' is the recent innovation trend which facilitates to solve social crux as well as to generate new industries. Korean government research institutes (GRIs) have taken a pivotal role for economic growth which capitalized on technology-oriented strategies. Recently, the policy interests on the transition of their role and mission towards multidisciplinary research organization is increasingly shed lights. This study regards the collaborative activities as one of the key success factors in the multidisciplinary research. In this sense, this study sets research purposes as follows: First, we intend to define a concept and to confine a scope of multidisciplinary research from the view point of R&D purposes and problem-solving process. Second, we categorize the collaboration and the relevant performances which reflect the characteristics of the multidisciplinary research. Third, we analyze the characteristics of collaborative activities and the effects of strength on the research performances. To this end, this study conducted a survey of 104 research project directors, which have experienced at least one of two types of multidisciplinary research projects through National R&D project or NST (National Research Council of Science & Technology) convergence research project. Then, we conducted regression analysis by utilizing the survey results in order to verify the relation between the collaborative activities and the performances. As results of analyses, first, the diversification of collaboration partners was a salient factor in the process of knowledge creation. Second, collective works among the researchers in similar area and domain enhanced mission-oriented technology development projects such as patent creation or technology transfer. Third, we verified that the diversity of created knowledge and the degree of relation continuity between researchers increased in the condition of guaranteeing individual researcher's independence and autonomy as well as sharing various technological capabilities. These results provide the future policy directions related to the methods to measure the collaboration and performance analysis for multidisciplinary research.
Collaborative optimization (CO) is a multi-level decomposed methodology for a large-scale multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO). CO is known to have computational and organizational advantages. Its decomposed architecture removes a necessity of direct communication among disciplines, guaranteeing their autonomy. However, CO has several problems at convergence characteristics and computation time. In this study, such features are discussed and some suggestions are made to improve the performance of CO. Only for the system level optimization, genetic algorithm is used and gradient-based method is used for subspace optimizers. Moreover, response surface models are replaced as analyses in subspaces. In this manner, CO is applied to aero-structural design problems of the aircraft wing and its results are compared with the multidisciplinary feasible (MDF) method and the original CO. Through these results, it is verified that the suggested approach improves convergence characteristics and offers a proper solution.
