Synthesis and Luminescence Properties of a Cyan-blue Thiosilicate-based Phosphor $SrSi_2S_5:Eu^{2+}$

  • A series of Sr-Si-S compounds was synthesized using an advanced chemical method in which the use of one solution-based process uniformly dispersed the $Eu^{2+}$ activators in the host crystals, to find new compositions that would suit phosphor applications. Particular focus was given to the Si-rich region. This led to the synthesis of a single-phase compound that showed an unknown X-ray diffraction pattern. This compound had a composition close to that of $SrSi_2S_5$. When this compound is activated with $Eu^{2+}$ ($SrSi_2S_5:Eu^{2+}$), it shows a cyan-blue emission with a main luminescence peak at 495 nm. This emission is excited by wavelengths of 250-440 nm and has a maximum excitation at 350 nm.

Multidisciplinary Approach to Breast Cancer Care

  • Aim: The purpose of this paper is to present the importance of multidisciplinary strategies in cancer prevention and control, especially comprehensive breast cancer care. Background: Worldwide, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women and is the leading cause of cancer deaths. Although the incidence of breast cancer in Asian countries is still lower than in Western countries, the rate of increase for the last two decades is striking. Methods: Data on cancer mortality, incidence, and risk factors were summarized by using the most recent data available from population-based cancer registries affiliated with the International Union Against Cancer, the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program and the CDC's National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR). Results: Global differences in breast cancer incidence and fluctuations in rates within a country still exist. The incidence of breast cancer in Asian countries was lower than in Western countries. Breast cancer incidence in the United States decreased each year during 1999-2003. On the other hand, morbidity and mortality related to breast cancer in Asia has increased significantly. Conclusion: Multidisciplinary strategies to reduce breast cancer mortality and promote breast cancer awareness are addressed. Lessons learned from multidisciplinary approaches to cancer treatment and control will be valuable in implementing future breast cancer research in the fields of basic, clinical, and population research in Asia.

  • This work identifies the key factors influencing the success of multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and trans-disciplinary R&D projects in transition economies by integrating knowledge management, organizational, inter/intra-collaboration (open-innovation), and leadership perspectives, while also addressing the perspective of the science of team science, which is an integrative approach to R&D. This is followed by providing the major sub-constructs of team science and policy implications to better facilitate multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary R&D projects in knowledge-based transition economies.

네덜란드 디자인 아카데미 아인트호벤의 통합적 디자인 교육에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Multidisciplinary Design Education in Design Academy Eindhoven)

  • This study particularly looked at educational philosophy and content of Design Academy Eindhoven in Holland which provides multidisciplinary design education. For it might be important data for examining the educational substance and directivity in design that help construct education system in design for a new era among the varying design paradigm. The biggest feature of DAE education system designed for students to optimize their ability with systematic education of 8 contexts with 4 approaches through innovative specialty system. Besides, their interaction helps students major in what is individual specialty. Most of all, the study on the contents of DAE's multidisciplinary education is expected to be significant data for our design education that lacks integrative perspective in the respect that students might be able to develop their identity as an individual designer in changing society beyond the mere technical and formative level of design.

  • The design cycle associated with large engineering systems requires an initial decomposition of the complex system into design processes which are coupled through the transference of output data. Some of these design processes may be grouped into iterative subcycles. In analyzing or optimizing such a coupled system, it is essential to determine the best order of the processes within these subcycles to reduce design cycle time and cost. This is accomplished by decomposing large multidisciplinary problems into several multidisciplinary analysis subsystems (MDASS) and processing it in parallel. This paper proposes new strategy for parallel decomposition of multidisciplinary problems to improve design efficiency by using the multiple objective genetic algorithm (MOGA), and a sample test case is presented to show the effects of optimizing the sequence with MOGA.

  • This paper presents an ASF (Aluminum Space Frame) BIW (Body in White) optimal design, which minimizes weight and satisfies multidisciplinary constraints such as static stiffness, vibration characteristics, low-/high-speed crash, and occupant safety. As only one cycle CPU time for all the analyses is 12 hours, the ASF design having 11-design variable is a large scaled problem. In this study, ISCD-II and conservative least square fitting method were used for efficient RSM modeling. Likewise, the ALM method was used to solve the approximate optimization problem. The approximate optimum was sequentially added to remodel the RSM. The proposed optimization method uses only 20 analyses to solve the 11-design variable problem. Moreover, the optimal design can achieve $15.6\%$ weight reduction while satisfying all the multidisciplinary design constraints.

  • Recently engineering systems problems become quite large and complicated. For those problems, design requirements are fairly complex. It is not easy to design such systems by considering only one discipline. Therefore, we need a design methodology that can consider various disciplines. Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) is an emerging optimization method to include multiple disciplines. So far, about seven MDO methodologies have been proposed for MDO. They are Multidisciplinary Feasible (MDF), Individual Feasible (IDF), All-at-Once (AAO), Concurrent Subspace Optimization (CSSO), Collaborative Optimization (CO), Bi-Level Integrated System Synthesis (BLISS) and Multidisciplinary Optimization Based on Independent Subspaces (MDOIS). In this research, the performances of the methods are evaluated and compared. Practical engineering problems may not be appropriate for fairness. Therefore, mathematical problems are developed for the comparison. Conditions for fair comparison are defined and the mathematical problems are defined based on the conditions. All the methods are coded and the performances of the methods are compared qualitatively as well as quantitatively.

Development of a multidisciplinary design optimization framework for an efficient supersonic air vehicle

  • A modular multidisciplinary analysis and optimization framework has been built with the goal of performing conceptual design of an advanced efficient supersonic air vehicle. This paper addresses the specific challenge of designing this type of aircraft for a long range, supersonic cruise mission with a payload release. The framework includes all the disciplines expected for multidisciplinary supersonic aircraft design, although it also includes disciplines specifically required by an advanced aircraft that is tailless and has embedded engines. Several disciplines have been developed at multifidelity levels. The framework can be readily adapted to the conceptual design of other supersonic aircraft. Favorable results obtained from running the analysis framework for a B-58 supersonic bomber test case are presented as a validation of the methods employed.

Facile preparation of superhydrophobic thin films using non-aligned carbon nanotubes

  • A simple preparation method on creating superhydrophobic surface using non-aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was demonstrated. Superhydrophobic CNT thin films were prepared by doping a sonicated mixture of CNTs and chloroform onto a glass slide. Water contact angles of the CNT thin films were measured using a contact angle goniometer. The thin films were characterized using laser microscope and scanning electron microscope. Experimental results revealed that the highest average contact angle of $162{\pm}2^{\circ}$ was achieved when the films' thickness was $1.628{\mu}m$. The superhydrophobic surface was stable as the contact angle only receded from $162{\pm}2$ to $157{\pm}2^{\circ}$ after 10 min under normal atmospheric condition.

A modified multidisciplinary feasible formulation for MDO using integrated coupled approximate models

  • This paper is concerned with the modification of multidisciplinary feasible formulation for MDO problems using the integrated coupled approximate models. A drawback of conventional MDFs is the numerical difficulty in decomposing the design variables and deriving the coupled equations of state. To overcome such a drawback of conventional methods, the coupling in analysis and design is resolved by approximating the state variables in each discipline by the response surface method and by modifying the optimization formulation using the corresponding integrated coupled approximate models. The validity, reliability and effectiveness of the proposed method are illustrated and verified through two optimization problems, a mathematical MDF problem and the multidisciplinary optimum design of suspension unit of wheeled armored vehicle.
