  • This paper introduces an Augmented Reality system recognizing hand gestures and shows results of the evaluation. The system's user can interact with artificial objects and manipulate their position and motions simply by his hand gestures. Hand gesture recognition is based on Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG). Salient features of human hand appearance are detected by HOG blocks. Blocks of different sizes are tested to define the most suitable configuration. To select the most informative blocks for classification multiclass AdaBoostSVM algorithm is applied. Evaluated recognition rate of the algorithm is 94.0%.

  • The aim of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of combining three popular tools used in pattern recognition, which are the Active Appearance Model (AAM), the two-dimensional discrete cosine transform (2D-DCT), and Kernel Fisher Analysis (KFA), for face recognition across age variations. For this purpose, we first used AAM to generate an AAM-based face representation; then, we applied 2D-DCT to get the descriptor of the image; and finally, we used a multiclass KFA for dimension reduction. Classification was made through a K-nearest neighbor classifier, based on Euclidean distance. Our experimental results on face images, which were obtained from the publicly available FG-NET face database, showed that the proposed descriptor worked satisfactorily for both face identification and verification across age progression.

  • Classification is an important research area as data can be easily obtained even if the number of predictors becomes huge. The support vector machine(SVM) is widely used to classify a subject into a predetermined group because it gives sound theoretical background and better performance than other methods in many applications. The SVM can be viewed as a penalized method with the hinge loss function and penalty functions. Instead of $L_2$ penalty function Fan and Li (2001) proposed the smoothly clipped absolute deviation(SCAD) satisfying good statistical properties. Despite the ability of SVMs, they have drawbacks of non-robustness when there are outliers in the data. We develop a robust SVM method using a weight function with the SCAD penalty function based on the local quadratic approximation. We compare the performance of the proposed SVM with the SVM using the $L_1$ and $L_2$ penalty functions.

  • This paper deals with the microcomputer realization of EMG pattern recognition system which provides identification of motion commands from the EMG signals for the on-line control of a prosthetic arm. A probabilistic model of pattern is formulated in the feature space of integral absolute value(IAV) to describe the relation between a motion command and the location of corresponding pattern. This model enables the derivation of sample density function of a command in the feature space of IAV. Classification is caried out through the multiclass sequential decision process, where the decision rule and the stopping rule of the process are designed by using the simple mathematical formulas defined as the likelihood probability and the decision measure, respectively. Some floating point algorithms such as addition, multiplication, division, square root and exponential function are developed for calculating the probability density functions and the decision measure. Only six primitive motions and one no motion are incorporated in this paper.

  • Gunnery has been used to detect and classify artilleries. In this paper, we used electro-optical data to get the information of muzzle flash from the artilleries. Feature based approach was applied; we first defined features and sub-features. The number of sub-features was 38~40 generic sub-features, and 2 model-based sub-features. To classify multiclass data, we introduced tree structure with clustering the classes according to the similarity of them. SVM was used for each non-leaf nodes in the tree, as a sub-classifier. From the data, we extracted features and sub-features and classified them by the tree structure SVM classifier. The results showed that the performance of our classifier was good for our muzzle flash classification problem.

  • In the Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS), the function of classification is very important, and detection performance depends on various features. Recently, a lot of research has been carried out on deep learning, but network intrusion detection system experience slowing down problems due to the large volume of traffic and a high dimensional features. Therefore, we do not use deep learning as a classification, but as a preprocessing process for feature extraction and propose a research method from which classifications can be made based on extracted features. A stacked AutoEncoder, which is a representative unsupervised learning of deep learning, is used to extract features and classifications using the Random Forest classification algorithm. Using the data collected in the IOT environment, the performance was more than 99% when normal and attack traffic are classified into multiclass, and the performance and detection rate were superior even when compared with other models such as AE-RF and Single-RF.

  • In this paper, we propose a hybrid method for the recognition of answer types in the WiseQA system. The answer types are classified into two categories: the lexical answer type (LAT) and the semantic answer type (SAT). This paper proposes two models for the LAT detection. One is a rule-based model using question focuses. The other is a machine learning model based on sequence labeling. We also propose two models for the SAT classification. They are a machine learning model based on multiclass classification and a filtering-rule model based on the lexical answer type. The performance of the LAT detection and the SAT classification shows F1-score of 82.47% and precision of 77.13%, respectively. Compared with IBM Watson for the performance of the LAT, the precision is 1.0% lower and the recall is 7.4% higher.

  • Multinomial probit model is a popular model for multiclass classification and choice model. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is widely used for estimating multinomial probit model, but its computational cost is high. However, it is well known that variational Bayesian approximation is more computationally efficient than MCMC, because it uses subsets of samples. In this study, we describe multinomial probit model with Gaussian process classification and how to employ variational Bayesian approximation on the model. This study also compares the results of variational Bayesian multinomial probit model to the results of naive Bayes, K-nearest neighbors and support vector machine for the UCI mice protein expression level data.

  • All application programs, including malware, call the Application Programming Interface (API) upon execution. Recently, using those characteristics, attempts to detect and classify malware based on API Call information have been actively studied. However, datasets containing API Call information require a large amount of computational cost and processing time. In addition, information that does not significantly affect the classification of malware may affect the classification accuracy of the learning model. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a method of extracting a essential feature set after reducing the dimensionality of API Call information by applying various feature selection methods. We used CICAndMal2020, a recently announced Android malware dataset, for the experiment. After extracting the essential feature set through various feature selection methods, Android malware classification was conducted using CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) and the results were analyzed. The results showed that the selected feature set or weight priority varies according to the feature selection methods. And, in the case of binary classification, malware was classified with 97% accuracy even if the feature set was reduced to 15% of the total size. In the case of multiclass classification, an average accuracy of 83% was achieved while reducing the feature set to 8% of the total size.
